Cheren stops when he sees the Pokémon on the other kid’s shoulder. Not just because it’s a Pokémon, but because despite this one’s universal popularity, Unova is one of few places where Pikachu can’t be found natively.

“Is that a Pikachu? I’ve never seen one in person before. It looks very healthy.”

“Well, yeah of course I am! But I’m not happy because I beat you!” The younger trainer puts some emphasis to it. “I’m happy because it was such a great battle! Plus our Pokémon seemed to have so much fun too!”

A grin on his face, “Plus, it was cool to battle you like this, y’know? So I can’t help but feel a bit happy I got to!”

“Wouldn’t you think the same, at least?”

James isn’t entirely sure how he ended up in a normal Pokémon battle-- a side effect of lacking Meowth’s expert planning, maybe, or just a result of the twerp’s supernatural optimism.

“I’ll admit Carnivine seemed to enjoy it. We haven’t gotten into many battles here.” He hasn’t sent Mime Jr. into battle not because two-versus-one would be unfair, but because it’s a baby he’d never put into the direct line of sight of this Pikachu’s Thunderbolt.
