The Energy of the Future

It has been an interesting experience watching the Green Energy Act and Feed in Tariff program unfold. This program pays a premium for renewable energy as a means of encouraging the development of local renewable energy generation.

The program was introduced in 2009. Since then, there has been a decided backlash against wind turbines and, to a much lesser extent, solar farms. The critics point out that it's expensive and inconsistent power that produces when you may not need it and often fails to produce when you do need it. And though people are working feverishly on improving large scale storage batteries (or other storage technologies), none are yet available at a price that works. And then some people just don't like the look of them - especially if they're next door to your house where your neighbour is making a bundle from something you have to look at.

The competitors are all jockeying for position. But they have their problems too. Nuclear bills itself as reliable, co2 free, baseload power - which it is - but you still have to ignore the slowly accumulating piles of spent fuel rods, the endless cost overruns and the odd Fukushima event to completely buy into it as the best solution for the future. Coal is on its way out of Ontario but there are still advertorials being published boasting of its low cost and reliability - though they don't mention that the carbon capture and storage dream remains just that.

The shiny new kid on the block is natural gas. With about half the co2 emissions of coal, none of the safety issues of nuclear and rock bottom prices due to newly discovered supplies, it's looking like the pre-eminent source of fuel going forward for generating electricity (it's also being used for transportation - natural gas vehicles are coming onto the radar as they never have before.) The only cloud on the horizon for gas is that the fracking technique used to free the gas from its underground lair uses a cocktail of poisonous chemicals. Some stories have come out of poisoned well water and gas laced water coming out of people's taps. So there is concern that widespread adoption of fracking might impact our aquifers.

The bottom line is that all energy comes with its costs - environmental and financial - and finding the right mix to ensure adequate energy supplies and the long term health of our finite planet (and ourselves) is no simple task.
