Bluebirds Single Launch - My Girl/Fantasy Palace

When I was invited down to scope out the ongoings at the 13th Note, I was a little dubious about what I’d find - I’m not an avid follower of the psych/industrial/punk scene. However, I was thoroughly taken aback with what I found.

Bluebirds’ support came from Future Glue and The New Fabian Society. They were equally as loud and as topless as one another. Exuberant gig goers danced, moshed and flew around the room like a bunch of Boeing 737′s. 

Bluebirds set came to fruition at the back of 10pm after raucous crowd teasing sets from their supports. It began with insistent requests for more reverb. It came. When it came, it was assisted with some incredible drum playing, so fast it alluded to an image of 100 toms being played when there was really only 3, and some deafening industrial guitar playing. Their first song began with some military marching tom playing which was eventually followed up with echoing vocals bouncing off the walls to fill the room. The set was disrupted when CSC founder Adam crashed the set leading to a momentary delay. In honesty, it was hilarious to see a promoter enjoying himself so much and exuding so much passion for the music he loved - that he himself caused a mishap. Things moved along quickly and Bluebirds continued to bang out dissonance infected tracks with booming reverberation on top. Things took a turn about 15 minutes in when Bluebirds executed a slower number which was total refreshing. It infused everything that’s great about them - with a trailing rhythm section. It really showcased the frontman’s impeccable vocals where the minimal bass and drums left no room for mistakes on a vocal performance. The crowd didn’t react any differently as punters sang along drunkenly or enthusiastically or a combination of both.

Normal service resumed after this. 

Their DIY ethos quickly reminded me of Pere Ubu, but the Bluebirds have a sound that does not stem from urban wastelands of Cleveland. They sheath a totally underground unorthodox psych sound. 

A half arsed effort to plug the single ‘My Girl’ came towards the end of the set. This was fitting with the rest of the evening. The attitude of all the bands; Future Glue, The New Fabian Society and Bluebirds was generally impolite, brash, rude and on some occasions totally insulting. But that itself was the beauty of it.
