I'd love to hear your opinion about PoE not having any romances. I'm not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, I can get why it must be frustrating for a serious team of designers like Avellone/Sawyer to have some part of their game reduced to a waifu simulator by their fans. And yet I'm quite disappointed that they won't do it, considering their amazing track record of writing compelling and realistic romances.
Well, I believe Josh Sawyer when he says āI have the same general opinion toward romances in our games that I have toward mounts in our games: I think both can certainly be great if you have the time and other resources to invest in them. If you try to take short cuts with them, they will be very bad and whatever time you spent implementing them will be wasted.ā Ā Totally reasonable, and Iām not cancelling my preorder (since I already got charged for my Kickstarter pledge) over that.Ā
I do hope, however, that beyond this classy and mature quote, theyāre not going to make a joke of it or mock fans who asked for it, since it became a āthingā with reporters and fans bugging them about it. Ā Iāve already seen gloating about this article, from people who are strongly opposed to video game romances, and think that they ruin games, or that fans of video game romances are greasy virgin nerds (when, lets be real, ALL video game fans are thought of that way by non gamers). Ā If for no other reason than to bother those people, I wish they hadnāt announced it already.
I also remember Chris Avellone saying that although he enjoys playing games with romances (like Dragon Age), he doesnāt feel comfortable writing them, (and I think if he did, they wouldnāt have a happy ending). Ā Thatās totally legit too, and while Iād be really interested in reading his version of a doomed romance, I donāt know if I would want to play it, if that makes any sense. Ā If the writers are more comfortable with creating companion relationships that arenāt romances, and that means better and more satisfying writing, then that can be a good thing.
I hope Iām not expecting too much from Pillars of Eternity, but Fallout: New Vegas is one of my favorite RPGs ever, and while Mask of the Betrayer was kind of a kick in the gut (and the non-canon aspects offended the Forgotten Realms geek in me), I think itās one of the best video game stories ever. Ā So, even without declarations of love from the party members, Iām pretty sure Iāll enjoy it.
I just wish they had all the time and money in the world, and there werenāt a bunch of smug haters patting them on the back for omitting a story element that has been a part of fiction since forever. Ā But there is always fanfiction, fan art, and imagination.
Also, thanks for the ask!
