Chapter 3 of Embers & Echoes is now up on AO3.
This chapter marks the end of the journey north as Alina and Annika finally return to Twin Lakes. Along the way, Charlie shares stories about the uncle they barely remember—stories of a younger James who was equal parts troublemaker, outdoorsman, and local menace.
One of my favorite parts of writing this chapter was exploring how memory changes over time. The girls remember pieces of Twin Lakes from childhood, but returning years later reveals just how much has changed—and how much hasn't.
