In a bid to get over the occasional embarrassment of failed page redirection or a site error, more web designers are trying to give their 404s a special something. Here’s small pick:

This website of journalist and blogger James Lileks links to a very neat 40’s style illustration and encourages you to go back to the home page.

Blue Fountain Media’s 404 consoles your mistake with a complementary game of Pac Man in the browser. Wonderful gesture.

This image accompanied a 404 error on McCain’s page, a not so subtle political dig at Barrack Obama.

Goes down the game route, with a custom version of space invaders for you to play.

The Japanese clothing brand gives you a small haiku to help you on your way.

A fantastic and community-spirited idea. With the scheme, the 404 pages of participating websites can host images of missing people.
