I've come across this situation a lot throughout my life as a Realtor: my acquaintances, friends of friends, close friends from church, school, and other groups turning to real estate for what they estimate to be an easy and surefire way of earning a ton of cash. I know this sure wasn't the case for me: it took a long time and a lot of networking to get where I am today...but I did wonder if it was the case for some. I found interesting statistics form HAR that shed some light on the real estate agent scene in the country, I hope you all find it useful as well:
There are 394,400 real estate agents employed in the United States. Of these, 57% are female and 43% are male.
87% are white, 4% are black/African American, and less than 1% are hispanic.
Of these 394,400 agents...
21% make less than $10k a year
62% make less than $50k a year
and ONLY
8% make $150k or more.
It seems like with any other profession, especially in this country, there is an opportunity to achieve some financial "greatness" as a Realtor. However, the expectation of quick and easy money is an unrealistic one for most. A good brokerage service, along with dedication, hard work, and a mentor are always beneficial.
