So the one thing I wanna share today on day 5 of #AutismAcceptanceMonth is my communication. Although I am fully speaking and don't really have a lot of issues talking anymore there are time that if someone asks me a question I would have a hard time verbalizing it in words.
I also feel that part of the reason that I was bullied even at the work place was because of this and because well I just exist. I'm not most 30 year olds and I don't even look or sound like an adult. People would mistake me as a teenager especially strangers that don't know me.
I was in speech therapy for a couple of years because my twin sister and I did not talk as well as kids our age did. My sister got out of speech therapy before I did. Part of the reasons that would have meltdowns so often because of the lack of communication that I had.
Sometimes I had thoughts of using some kind of AAC device or some sort text to speech talk thing because I am much more express and honest via typing than in speech. I strongly prefer texting because of this reason and I would only call someone if I know them really well.
And when I talk to people now it would be simple sentences unless if it's a topic that I am really interested in or if we are talking about my cat. I wish folks especially my ex friends and bullies would understand that I may say things that sound old or hurtful but really It is just I have a hard time thinking of what I wanna say.
So just because someone is fully verbal like me does not mean communication is great. You have no idea how far I had come to be where I am today. I still struggle with certain things and communication is one of them.
