ello everyone! here is the commentary that i promised you all yesterday for today and then promptly forgot to format that night which im now rushing to do at 8 in the morning today before classes.
Halikar the Mirage Serpent by @typical-davinci-impersonator
This certainly captures the splashiness of an Elder Dragon but I think that last ability is too much even here. Also, granting all the abilities of broad subsets of creatures to other broad subsets of creatures gets into too funky of rules territory. If I control a Maro and an Enigma Drake, whatโs its power, for example?
Kida Vahine by @bergdg
I like how this card, like Piru from modern horizons 2, makes the upkeep sacrifice clause a bit more interesting. How many cards do you need to exile with this before youโre happy with it? I feel like itโs several attacks worth, which makes this less exciting. What if instead this was like, โWhenever you cast a spell from your hand or play a land from your hand, exile the top card of your library.โ That has a lot more explosive potential and encourages you to play out your hand since you can refill it when they die.
Nicol Bolas, Escaped by @dabudder
Iโm not sure this ability is really what Iโd expect from a bolas tbh. A card that encourages you to functionally sacrifice him (since you can either play him *or* your opponentโs thing) just feels really off flavor. This is more minor and nitpicky, but he also probably wants a discard effect; while his cards seem at first glance kinda generically grixis, discarding is His Thing. Bolasโs Touch breaks minds.
Belgarath, Witherbloom Heir by @railway-covidae
Oooh this definitely has the excitement an elder dragon should. Six mana 7/7 flying trample, and a very cool ability. Mayyyybe the numbers are a bit too pushed, but it seems fine if on the upper side of things. I really like this. The mana gate on the ability was a good choice.
Crosis, Endless Hunger by @genericaura
I question the choice to make crosis an elder dragon a little since heโs explicitly of a generation that is *not* elder dragons but the children of them, but I donโt really want to get into the weeds of things, Iโm not taking off points for that. I like the last ability as an evolution of the original elder dragon ability, but I do think it might end up a bit more fiddly than fun. Not sure though. I definitely think it should be true hexproof instead of ward though, with that ability. As for the main ability, Iโm not convinced it plays well. You were riffing off crosis (and his siblingโs) original abilities that all had a similar color-matters esque effect but I donโt think itโs a great fit for modern design. Even the referencing cycle in time spiral didnโt do it. It has that very hallmark of old magic feel to it where sometimes your opponent is just very screwed over by playing a certain color, the same color as you. And encouraging monocolor on a three color card is just, a bit sketchy, tbh. I think the coolness of seeing new versions of the primevals that fit modern design better outweighs the coolness of the callback. Also, you forgot the power and toughness lol.
Jiskal Cydru by @hypexion
A cycle of elder dragons seems like a great rare place to put 4 color cards, so youโve got a really enticing concept here. The ability seems a good match for the hype as well. But thereโs a few details of the exact execution that seem off. Only being able to cast spells of *exactly* the amount of damage feels far too limiting, โthat much or lessโ would definitely play better, but then thatโs a huge increase in power. Maybe simplify to โcast any number with mana value [4 or 5] or lessโ? I also think you should cut the haste, to give your opponent a better chance to interact before you pop off.
Hydrargyr Solem y @nine-effing-hells
I love the cycle this implies with wedge-colored original-elder style dragons (technically already started with Piru) and I love prowess prowess prowess thatโs a very funny bit of text. The death trigger is definitely a good payoff, and honestly I wonder if it can be even bigger. This is really solid though
Kaztur Dovas by @i-am-the-one-who-wololoes
This is really really cool and exciting. Almost too much so. This does too much of the work for you by both reanimating and tutoring to yard. I think this makes games to same-y, in addition to the power. I definitely think this card would be served better by cutting one ability or the other, and my preference would be cutting the tutoring ability.
Ugin, Seeker of the Unseen// Ugin, Father of Tarkir by @fractured-infinity
Iโm very glad someone made an Ugin parallel to bolasโs card from m19 like people were wanting. The front side seems very strong but prooobably okay? I do think this may be a bit too focused on manifesting though; itโs all just variations on ways to do more or less the same thing; Iโm especially worried with how the +2 is largely a similar effect to the combat damage of the front, so youโre basically getting the same effect every turn as the front except this time without attached damage. I do really like the 0 ability both as a morph/manifest payoff and a flavorful effect for ugin.
Hetman Roghar by @marrinara-sauce
This definitely isnโt really what i was looking for and I think you knew that, but like i said before, im not gonna be picky. This is clearly a signpost uncommon meant for limited, but I worry about how board-stally it is there, since you can keep all the citizens and peasants you presumably have lying around to keep indestructibly chump-blocking pretty easily. Has those issues as a commander too, to a degree, but the pains of that are definitely lessened since commander is far less about combat tempo.
Draugki, Immersturm Tyrant by @deg99
What an incredible typeline. I think Iโm in love. โElder Vampire Dragonโ, thatโs cool as hell. As for the mechanics, Iโm a little less enamored. My main issue is that itโs very easy to exile lots of cards from a graveyard at once, and this just gives you tons and tons of value for that. Iโd suggest a once-per-turn limitation on the abilities, but I donโt think thereโs room for that. Maybe โone or moreโ does the job?
Dromoka of the Abzan by @bread-into-toast
Fascinating flavor here, Iโm intrigued. This is a very abzan dragon though, I quite like it. Go wide, +1/+1 counter synergy, reanimation. All very abzan. In the event something wild happens lorewise, I could see this card existing.ย
Pizoondertanx by @wolkemesser
I think this is just a bit too noninteractive. The flash means you can take your opponent when they least expect it, the static ability will randomly hose some kinds of decks even without the stun counters, the ward makes it hard to get rid of that static, and even if they do they still have to wait a bit for their creatures. I think any of these on their own could be okay, but altogether it just seems like too much.
Wrestare, the Typhone King by @snugz
Okay first of all, killer title. โThe typhoon kingโ, just excellent. Powerlevel wise this could safelyjust be a full-on future sight without any limitations. But to keep it as a flying-matters card, I think this definitely needs something more going on. Iโm not quite sure what though
Cantros Vel by @batatafilosofal
As I said in my commentary in the other 4 color card, I think a cycle of elder dragons is a rare good opportunity for a 4 color cycle, so Iโm a big fan of the concept. Iโm intrigued by greenless mind-control matters, though Iโm not sure about mixing it with an Aura matters effect. It feels like it would lead to a kind of confused deck. The alternative is going full in on auras, and just using the second effect as a payoff for the first- and on second thought that probably is the main way of playing- but a 4 color enchantment matters card that excludes green feelsโฆ odd.
Tayus the Nostalgic by @curiooftheheart
I like how this, like Piru, plays around with the upkeep sacrifice trigger. The payoff is definitely far less than Piruโs though and I think you made two good choices to balance that out: 1 making it trigger on etb and 2 giving this haste. I like this.
Ugin by @horsecrash
I feel like this card just doesnโt go big enough, to be honest. Like look at how big Piru goes. Uginโs death trigger is just really specificโ you really need the time to build it up with his manifest ability. But an 8 mana card that asks for continued payment shouldnโt really need that kind of work put into it.
Valustix, Celebrity Chef by @stupidstupidratcreatures
Oooh interesting. This is an odd one. Being able to turn tokens into bursts of mana is scary, but only being able to use it on activated abilities probably more than balances it out. Now itโs more of sac two foods: You gain 3 life. This seems like a well-constructed engine kind of design: it enters the battlefield to give you some resources, then gives some alternate uses for those resources. As a minor note, I might tweak the ETB effect to be โeach time youโve cast a commander from the command zoneโ, not just this exclusively. And having the second activated ability require tapping but not the first feels slightly odd.

Hello folks, here are most of what I commented about Snape. Sometimes itโs just a personal thought, a little anecdote, sometimes it deals about the problematics the character of Snape rises. Donโt worry though, key comments on his character will have their own separate post. I wonโt quote everytimeย he gets mentioned, and sometimes Iโll quote passages where heโs not mentioned but he makes me think of him.
The model is like this: The points starts with a quote from the book - certain words will be put in bold - and the quote is followed with commentary. It follows chronological order. Every time a new commentary appears, the next quote will have its own bullet; and if thereโs no commentary or if the transcript isnโt cut, the text will be warped. I tried to use bigger quotes in case we need to understand the context in which the quote is used, but because I donโt want my file to be too heavy, I wonโt use introduction to the scene. Sorry, Iโm not really here to explain what happened in HP1, though I will precise the chapters involved.
Comments are in parenthesis and I havenโt used theย โโ for the dialogue, but please donโt judge, itโs really tiring and I wanted to spend my energy on commenting rather than perfecting the transcripts.
As usual I donโt see much problems with what Iโve written now but when Iโll post I might modify things so... donโt judge too hard in the beginning. Maybe Iโll perfect the commentary? If I can, Iโll use a link for the PDF version of what Iโve written, I just need to know where I can publish the PDF...
Beware, it is very very long. I have completed 16 pages (12k words). So take a seat and... well, I hope youโll enjoy.ย
Chp 1 - The Boy Who Lived
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Albus Dumbledore didnโt seem ย to realize that he had just arrived in a street where everything from his name to his boots was ย unwelcome. (There are lots of passages like these that make me think of Snape ย and that can hint to what his life as a child could have been. For instance, ย his name is Severus and could have aroused mockery.)
Chp 2 โ The Vanishing ย Glass
Chp 3 โ The Letters ย from No One
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย They stuff peopleโs heads ย down the toilet first day at Stonewall.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Smetling boys [โฆ] also ย carried knobbly sticks, used for hitting each other while the teachers ย werenโt looking. This was supposed to be good training for later life.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Uncle Vernon stopped at last outside a gloomy-looking hotel on the ย outskirts of a big city. Dudley and Harry shared a room with twin beds ย and damp, musty sheets. Dudley snored but Harry stayed awake, sitting ย on the window-sill, staring down at the lights of passing carsย and ย wondering...
They ate stale cornflakes and cold tinned ย tomatoes on toastย for breakfast next day. They had just finished ย when the owner of the hotel came over to their table.
โโScuse me, but is one of you Mr H. Potter? ย Only I got about an โundred of these at the front desk.โ
She held up a letter so they could read the ย green ink address:
Mr H. Potter, Room 17, Railview Hotel, ย Cokeworth.
Harry made a grab for the letter but Uncle ย Vernon knocked his hand out of the way. The woman stared.
โIโll take them,โ said Uncle Vernon, standing ย up quickly and following her for the dining room. (See my post about the Durlseys: Snape and Lily lived in Cokeworth.)
Chp 4 โ The Keeper of ย Keys
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย This wizard, about twenty years ago now, started lookinโ fer followers. Got โem too โ some were afraid, some just wanted a bit oโ his power, ย โcause he was gettinโ himself power, all right. Dark days, Harry. Didnโt know ย who ter trust, didnโt dare get friendly with strange wizards or witchesโฆ ย Terrible things happened. He was ย takinโ over. (I guess thatโs where the idea that Snape joined then ย defected the winning side come from.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Now, yer mum anโ dad were as ย good a witch anโ wizard as I ever knew. Head ย Boy anโ Girl at Hogwarts in their days! Suppose the mystโry is why You-Know-Who never tried to get them on ย his side beforeโฆ probably knew they ย were too close ter Dumbledore ter want anythinโ to do with the Dark Side. ย Maybe he thought he could persuade ย โemโฆ maybe he just wanted โem outta ย the way. (Several ideas here. First, as I take care to precise to people, ย James somehow became Head Boy despite his bullying attitude and past illegal ย activities, and this interest in him can be explained by how close his family ย was to Dumbledore. Second, Hagrid says that it was common for Voldemort to ย try and have people join him. Why is it a mystery though that he didnโt try that ย with a widely known anti-Voldemort/anti-Slytherin Potter and a Muggle-Born? ย Could Voldemort hire Muggle-Borns? Third, here Hagrid says that Voldemort ย came for the family, the parents, that Harry himself. Later it will be ย deduced that he came for Harry firstโฆ although the prospect of defeating ย those who defied him thrice would be tempting on its own. Does this mean ย though that if they hadnโt been close enough to Dumbledore, Voldemort would ย have asked them sooner if they wanted to join him, while Severus was there? ย What did Snape think about this, if he came to learn that?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Knew yer mum anโ dad, anโ nicer people you couldnโt find. ย (Hagrid idealizes Harryโs parents. After all, itโs hard to speak of the dead. ย It is sad that the books donโt end with the idea that parents, or the family, ย donโt need to be perfect. However, Iโm still surprised Hagrid wouldnโt come ย to say โNicer people you couldnโt findโ when heโd been a gamekeeper during ย Snapeโs scholarity.)
Chp 5 โ Diagon Alley
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Harry suddenly realized that ย the tape measure, which was measuring between ย his nostrils, was doing this on its own. (OOooooooo Snape)
Chp 6 โ The Journey ย from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters
Chp 7 โ The Sorting ย Hat
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Professor Quirell, in his ย absurd turban, was talking to a teacher with greasy black hair, a hooked ย nose and sallow skin. (First ย description. Snape is already coded Jewish/Semite. In fact I would argue that ย Snape incarnated the male version of the clichรฉ ugly witches brewing potions, ย with their absurd big noses, wicked smiles, black hair, weird skin, crooked ย teeth and ugliness. Just look at images of wicked witches on Google. (I have images on my Word file but I canโt post them here, oopsie)
God this is ย cruel. To think that Snape did fly on a broom, and that Boggart Snape is ย forced into ridiculous women clothingโฆ Meanwhile you have the clichรฉ of the ย sexy witches, ie Lily and Ginny (just look on the Internet).
(Thereโs an image of a red-haired witch on a broom with a cat: The Potters ย had a cat, I think it came from Lily.)
I think that ย before they would demonize red-haired because of their association with ย witches in England. Even now we hear things like โred-haired have no soulโ, ย โthey smellโ, etc. But am I the only one finding this weird? Hasnโt Rowling ย used and mixed clichรฉs of wizards and witches?
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Harry watched Snape for a ย while but Snape didnโt look at him ย again. (There are lots of passages where Harry stare at him but Snape ย quits looking back, like at the end of GoF or the first Defence class of HBP.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Perhaps Harry had eaten a bit ย too much, because he had a very strange dream. He was wearing Professor ย Quirellโs turban, which kept talking to him, telling him he must transfer to ย Slytherin at once, because it was his ย destiny. Harry told the turban he didnโt want to be in Slytherin; it got ย heavier and heavier; he tried to pull it off but it tightened painfully โ and ย there was Malfoy, laughing at him as he struggles with it โ then Malfoy turned into the hook-nosed ย teacher, Snape, whose laugh became high and cold โ there was a burst of ย green light and Harry woke, sweating and shaking. (What does this dream even ย mean? Why is Harry having this dream though? Is it a way to make the reader ย suspect that Malfoy and Snape are bad people? To implent the idea that Snape ย will try to kill Harry?)
Chp 8 โ The Potions ย Master
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย The Potions lesson turned out ย to be the worst thing that had happened to him so far.
Snape, like Flitwick, started the class by ย taking the register, and like Flitwick, ย he paused at Harryโs name.
His eyes were ย black like Hagridโs, but they had ย none of Hagridโs warmth. They were cold and empty and made you think ย of dark tunnels. (I love this metaphor. But the idea that his eyes were ย empty isโฆ interesting. Often eyes are said to be empty when someone doesnโt ย feel anything anymore, often because of trauma; later we will learn that ย Snape can indeed use Occlumency to empty his mind. Empty eyes can also refer ย to how he is apathetic, which suits him well. All in all, eyes described as ย empty in a work make me think that the person has suffered a lot, or that ย they are born a littleโฆ uncommon. They are, also with bad-grooming, symbols ย of depression and suicide. Have an example of what I imagine:Please check Anime Empty/Blank Eyes on Google)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Like Professor McGonagall, Snape had ย the gift of keeping a class silent without effort. (A lot of comparisons with ย other teachers/adultsโฆ Maybe he learned from them? Anyway, if he does things ย like McGonagall and Flitwick, then itโs no wonder to think his teaching ย habits were in the norm.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย A bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach. (Lorrie Kim says that itโs a way to draw attention and make the ย students want to prove theyโre not a dunderhead, in other words, make them ย interested in Potions. And it works on Hermione)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Potter! Said Snape suddenly. (Itโs ย sudden and contrasts with his previous speechโฆ no โMrโ Potter.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snapeโs lips curled into a ย sneer. Tut, tut โ fame clearly isnโt everything. (I ย think he clicks his tongue behind his teeth to make that sound. Why does he ย need to belittle Harry though? Because of his spying role? Because he thinks ย Harry thrives in popularity, as heโll tell Dumbledore later: โdelighted to find ย himself famousโ, thus proving heโs delusional? Or just out of spite?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Thought you wouldnโt open a book before coming, eh, Potter? (But he did, Snape. He did.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Harry forced himself to keep looking straight into those cold ย eyes. (He does this several times in the series)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย He had looked through his ย books at the Dursleysโ, but did Snape expect him to remember everything in One ย Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi? (Why is Harry thinking about how he ย didnโt learn One Thousand Magical Herbs ย and Fungi, instead of Magical ย Drafts and Potions? Isnโt that a tactic from the narrator to empathize on ย how impossible to learn โone thousandโ things in one month and how what Snape ย is asking is impossible, thus unfair? Isnโt it a bit cheap? Is it allowed and ย required in Hogwarts that students read their books in preparation for the ย following year? I donโt think so, but I know it was done in ancient schools. ย Anywayโฆ those questions are pretty obviously asked to call Harry stupid.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย At this, Hermione stood up, her hand stretching towards ย the dungeon ceiling. (Hermione canโt control herself. Imagine standing up just to answer a question. ย The fuck?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย I donโt know, said Harry ย quietly. I think Hermione does, though, why donโt you try her?
A few people laughed; ย Harry caught Seamusโ eye and Seamus ย winked. Snape, however, was not pleased. (In HBP Seamus is also glad that ย Harry cheeks Snape. Snapeโs plan to humiliate Harry backfired. But hey, you ย can only blame yourself.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย And a point will be taken from Gryffindor house for your cheek, ย Potter. (You provoked him, sweetie, and you had no right technically. Notice ย how itโs only one point. What hurts ย is not the amount of points retrieved but what it means: Snape has ย antagonized Harry from the first lesson, and heโs very capable of finding ย reasons to punish him if he wants. I wonder what would have happened if Harry ย hadnโt cheeked him back?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Things didnโt improve for the Gryffindors as the Potions ย lesson continued. (Harry isnโt the whole Gryff house, but since the ย punishments by points are meant to be collective, it affects the houseโฆ However ย I think itโs also a sign of how the narrator is quick to say Snape is unfair ย to Gryffindors in general, from Harryโs point of view, and not โjustโ Harry.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape put them all into pairs and set them to mixing up a simple potion to cure boils. (Boils ย from touching a cauldronโฆ boils from Furnunculus, or fires in the chimneysโฆ ย Also Snape puts first years into pairs. In third year I think he starts to ย separate them. Iโm not sure.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย He swept around in his long ย black cloak, watching them weigh dried ย nettles and crush snake fangs, criticizing ย almost everyone except Malfoy, whom he seemed to like. (1) Snapeโs first ย class uses dried nettles and Snapeโs riddle involves nettle wine because heโs ย a character inspired from John Nettleship. Snapeโs totem plant is a nettle โ ย and alright, asphodel, wormwood and aconite. 2) I think there too, the ย narrator is quick on antagonizing Snape. The text implies that he does ย criticize his Slytherins as well โ although itโs not explicitly said โ and ย just not Malfoy. Does Draco already have a talent/knowledge in Potions thatโd ย justify the lack of criticism other than being favouritism? Maybe thatโs ย because he does succeed really well. Malfoy had broom lessons, surely he had ย Potions ones as well, from Snape or someone else. The difference here? The ย book wonโt say that complimenting Hermione the most is bordering on favouritism, ย because you know, โshe deserves itโ โ although she also was introduced as โa nightmareโ โ but will precise that when ย Snape compliments Draco, he seemed to ย like him and, in our minds, it draws the conclusion itโs for this reason ย alone that heโs congratulating him. In other words, the text wants us to believe ย that Draco doesnโt deserve ย compliments. What we know however is that the book tends to judge characters ย based on how theyโre presented to Harry rather than from an objective point ย of view โ for instance, Hagrid โpunishesโ Dudley and we are supposed to find ย it fair as he was a bully, when an objective point of view will show that ย since Hagrid couldnโt know Dudley was a bully but could just assume that a โfat ย Muggleโ was to be insulted โ Dudley didnโt try to eat the cake in the books โ ย what he did in attacking Duldley and trying to turn him into a pig is ย actually a horrible scene (see critic about Hagrid); McGonagall only ย retrieves 5 points from Hermione, and we suppose itโs fair because she didnโt ย actually try to beat the troll, but when we consider that McGonagall punished ย her with 50 points for being out of curfew out-of-bounds later, we can ย conclude that McGonagall punishes near-suicide and disobedience 10 times less ย than a nighttime stroll โ meaning sheโs inconsistent/illogical in her ย punishments. Here, Draco is introduced as a bully and undeserving of love or ย compliments because of thatโฆ except ย that objectively, if he does his potion well, then he has the right to be ย complimented without it being implied to be favouritism. 3) The text also ย implies Snape criticized Hermione, but is it really unjustified? We donโt ย know. Hermione has been proven to have difficulties with a practical use of ย magic โ riding a broomstick, repelling the Devilโs Snare, defeating her ย Boggart โ maybe at first she had difficulties in brewing Potions. Thatโs not ย something she could have learned at home or in books. Itโd be logical she ย learned how to brew better throughout the months. 4) Hermione is complimented ย by her teachers too โ in HP1 alone we have McGonagall twice and Flitwick ย doing just that before Harry and Ron become friends with her โ the difference ย is that Snape will compliment others ย than the best of the class. Though is that such a bad thing in itself? I ย remember that good teachers were those who didnโt focus on the gifted only. 5) And you know what it makes me think of? Thereโs an essay about John Nettleship that explains he could be mistakenly perceived as favouring the gifted because he was passionate in his job and had the tendency to show appreciation to those showing real involvement. Meanwhile, JK Rowling didnโt participate much โ she hated Chemistry, she didnโt seem to succeed, thus why she chose a Potions Master to be the bad teacher. We have two elements. First Netlleship was said to try and make participate people with difficulties, like Rowling, but because she often โdidnโt knowโ the answer, she might have felt pressured or ridiculed purposefully by her teacher โ in the books, Harry is asked questions he canโt possibly answer, since he โcanโt remember everythingโ, and Neville gets pressured. At the same time, Hermione, Rowlingโs self-insert, is said to try and participate but getting ignored by Snape, who prefers to compliment other people. Maybe this is an aspect of how Rowling perceived favouritism in Nettleship? )
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย He was just telling everyone ย to look at the perfect way Malfoy ย had stewed his horned slugs. (Jealous much, Harry? McGonagall had just done ย the same for Hermioneโs needle! In third year sheโll compare Hermione to ย Seamus to prove heโd better take an example on her. I donโt remember the ย quote well, but I do know that comparing students like that is not that ย healthyโฆ)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย When clouds of acid green ย smoke and a loud hissing gilled the dungeon. Neville had somehow managed to ย melt Seamusโ cauldron into a twisted blob and their potion was seeping across ย the stone floor, burning holes in ย peopleโs shoes. Within seconds, the whole class were standing on their ย stools while Neville, who had been drenched in the potion when the cauldron ย collapsed, moaned in pain as angry red ย boils sprang up all over his arms and legs.
Idiot boy! ย Snarled Snape, clearing the spilled potion away with one wave of his wand. I ย suppose you added the porcupine quills before taking the cauldron off the ย fire? (When Snape is stressed he gets angry.)
Neville whimpered as boils started to pop up all over his nose.
Take him up ย to the hospital wing, Snape spat at Seamus. ย (Contrary to Hooch, Snape takes care to ask for the other member of the pair, ย aka a student, to bring Neville to the hospital. Thus Snape wonโt leave his ย class in a room full of potions that can explode and cauldrons that can burn. ย Howeverโฆ why didnโt you have a cure for boils to help Neville if you are ย specifically in a class where students can burn themselves because of the ย potions, the fire and the cauldrons? There are lots of problems in a school ย such as Hogwarts, especially concerning Potions courses from what Iโve seen ย in HP1, but even that should have been accessible to you.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Iโve heard Snape can turn ย very nasty. (A precision. Snape isnโt โalways nastyโ. He can turn nasty if we go too far.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snapeโs always taking points ย off Fred and George. (Not ย surprising though, they keep doing pranks and breaking rules.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape hasnโt taken any points ย from students other than the two from Harry. Is that what we call an ย unforgiving absolute bully? If he had been, heโd have retrieved more than 2 ย points and would have bullied other Gryffindors. He hasnโt.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Hagrid, like Ron, told Harry not ย to worry about it, that Snape ย liked hardly any of the students. (We have two elements. 1) People ย reassure Harry in saying that what Snape does is not to worry about; they ย donโt see the problem right away. Hagrid, ย the adult Harry trusts the most for now, is the first to quite dismiss ย Harryโs concerns, and not do something about it; maybe it broke Harryโs ย belief that adults would speak with Snape so he wouldnโt do that. People ย close to Harry downplay this behaviorโฆ which is something that can be done ย casually in school, and if it can help some people, it can also send the ย message that the teacher will be defended/excused for their bullying. 2) They ย do compare Harry with other students, but Harry isnโt a student like any ย other. So there are two possibilities: either Snape doesnโt treat Harry ย differently than others, despite his genuine hate against him, and thus ย implies that what he does against Harry actually isnโt caused by hate, which ย would be a little surprising considering how the book present things, but ย which corresponds to how Snape will say to the Minister that he tries to ย treat all of his students fairly, including Harry โ interestingly we can ย imagine that Fudge is right when he says that everybody has a soft spot for ย Harry, which is shown regularly in the books, meaning Harry can get used to ย special treatment, and by consequence, when Snape does something right but ย that doesnโt please Harry because he expected favouritism even unconsciously, ย Snape will be called unfair unfairly; or ย Snape does treat Harry differently and this implies that he treats other ย students in a kinder manner, despite โhardly likingโ any of them, which would ย be logical and good but a little weird as Snape is described as generally ย being in a bad mood.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย But he seemed to really hate me.
Rubbish! Said Hagrid. Why should he?
Yet Harry couldnโt help thinking that Hagrid didnโt quite meet his eyes when he ย said that.
Harry wondered if Hagrid had changed the subject on purpose. (Acceptation ย of Snapeโs behaviour? Either way Hagrid is the one that quite says Harry is ย mistaken/lies about how wrong what Snape did was. And did Hagrid know ย something about Snape that he didnโt want to tell Harry? For instance, does ย he know that Snape was badly treated by the Marauders? Does he think that ย Snape kind of โdeservesโ to have his way, or that itโs understandable and he ย draws the conclusion that itโs excusable? Itโs Hagrid, folks.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Had Hagrid collected that ย package just in time? Where was it now? And ย did Hagrid know something about Snape that he didnโt want to tell Harry? ย (Suspicion about the Stone starts from there.)

ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Youโre a lot braver now youโre back on the ground ย and youโve got your little friends ย with you, said Harry coolly. (And doesnโt that remind us of some ย particular gang? Harry has common points with Snape: โ[Coward?] Your father ย would never attack me unless it was four-on-one, what would you call that, I ย wonder?โ)
Chp 10 โ The Midnight ย Duel
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Oh, well done! Cried Professor Flitwick, ย clapping. Everyone see here, Miss ย Grangerโs done it! (Same thing than McGonagall, but when Snape ย congratulates Malfoy itโs favouritism you know)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Perhaps it was because he was now so busy, what with Quidditch ย practice three evenings a week on top of all his homework, but Harry could hardly believe it when he ย realised that heโd already been at Hogwarts two months. (So thatโs where ย I start to draw a theory: Harry has spent two months in Hogwarts and it seems ย quick. Usually it happens when you spend a really good time. But if Snape ย really was unbearable, why donโt we hear anything else than what happened in ย the first lesson? Why isnโt he said to have done something meanwhile, ย although he probably heard, like Flitwick, that Harry has been given special ย treatment with being allowed to play Quidditch as a first-year and being ย given the best broom of the time? My theory is that Snapeโฆ remained cool. For ย that, I have listed all the times Harry is punished by Snape or feels he gets ย bullied, along with the context. Youโll see something interesting in the end.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย A moment later, Professor ย McGonagall had come bursting into the room, closely followed by Snape, with Quirell bringing up the rear. ย (BROTP)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape bent over the troll. Professor McGonagall was looking at Ron and ย Harry. Harry had never seen her looks so angry. Her lips were white.
โWhat on earth were you thinking of?โ said ย Professor McGonagall, with a cold fury ย in her voice. Harry looked at Ron, who was stills tanding with his wand in ย the air. โYouโre lucky you werenโt killed. Why arenโt you in your dormitory?โ (McGonagall shares the same ย traits as Snape when sheโs angry: lips become white, her fury is cold. They ย are that similar.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape gave Harry a swift, piercing ย look. Harry looked at the floor. He wished Ron would put his ย wand down. (Interesting. Snape doesnโt pay attention to Harry until he ย hears that he wasnโt in his dormitory, which prompt Snape to give Harry a ย piercing look, which can be seen as attempt in Legilimency, or a move of ย anger at knowing that Harry/Jamesโ son already proves not to follow rules and ย to leave the dormitory when he feels like it. The difference in this sceneโฆ ย is that itโs McGonagall who makes the accusation. Harry does seem to feel ย guilty and ashamed. Later, when Snape accuses Harry of the same things, like ย going to Hogsmeade illegally in PoA, Harry wonโt listen, wonโt admit anything ย and will become angry against Snape. Letโs list what Harry has done wrong ย during all those years though, shall we? How heโs punished, by whom, whatโs ย his reaction.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย I went looking for the troll because I โ I thought I could deal with ย it on my own โ you know, because Iโve read all about them.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย It was as if Snape had ย started handing out sweets. (Funny ย image. However I suspect something else. Snape has seen Hermione outright ย standing up to answer to his question, and now he might believe that Hermione ย was so arrogant she felt like fighting the troll on her own. Will this ย explain their animosity, if there is a big one?)
Chp 11 โ Halloweโen
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย They were standing with their backs to [the bluebell fire lamp], getting warm, when Snape crossed the ย yard. Harry noticed at once that Snape was limping. Harry, Ron and Hermione ย moved closer together to block the fire from view; they were sure it wouldnโt be allowed. (Why? Also best way to ย attract attention.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Unfortunately, something about ย their guilty faces caught Snapeโs eye. He limped over. He hadnโt seen the ย fire, but he seemed to be looking for ย a reason to tell them off anyway. (The Trio looks guilty, so Snape comes ย to see what they surely did wrong. But just after the narrative says that ย Snape will be looking for โaโ reason to tell them off โanywayโ โ in short, ย Snape is looking for an excuse to punish them. The switching between the Trio ย thinking they did wrong and Snape looking what they do, and Snape ย purposefully looking for a reason to punish them, is instantaneous and barely ย visible. What is the strongest idea you will retain however? โLooking for a ย reason to tell them off anyway.โ You barely have Snapeโs point of view, but ย mainly Harryโs opinion.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Library books are not to be taken outside the school, said Snape. Give ย it to me. Five points from Gryffindor.
Heโs just made that ย rule up, Harry ย muttered angrily as Snape limped away. Wonder whatโs wrong with his leg? (1) Oh, ย are you really truthful Harry? Arenโt you the one inventing the fact Snape ย has invented a rule? After all, there ARE books in libraries that shouldnโt ย be taken outside on the grounds; there even are some which canโt be taken out ย of the library. Donโt you get a pass from the librarian when borrowing one? ย If you did, you should have shown it to Snape. 2) I think we touch something ย important. When Iโve been completing the excel sheet about Harryโs ย wrongdoings and the punishments he received, I have created a column named โUsual ย protocolโ, which is based on either Hogwartsโ clearly stated rules or how ย professors would deal with such actions and punish similar offenses. I have ย found something obviousโฆ but very important: we donโt know all of Hogwartsโ ย rules. Hogwarts is quite a unique school, we canโt always apply our own rules ย to it. Because Harry โ and the reader โ doesnโt know the rules, we cannot ย always know whether Harry has effectively broken a rule, how serious the ย wrongdoing was, what punishment should be associated with it. Meaning that we ย can only base our theories on the professors. And here comes the problem: the ย (un)fairness of a professorโs punishment cannot be appropriately judged based ย on their kindness or how much the narrator likes them. Which is precisely ย what the books seem to do. To know if what Snape has done is unfair, we constantly have to take distance from ย Harryโs many, many biased words and ย suggestions and lack of info and misdirection โ like the โfor no reason at ย allโ concerning the penalty for the Puffs โ to wonder if Snapeโs punishment ย truly is wrongโฆ and if Snape really just wanted to โfind excusesโ. The book ย is an example of how difficult and sometimes impossible it is: because sometimes ย we donโt know the rules of Hogwarts, and often we donโt know the punishments ย they deserve, we cannot truly know if, as Harry says, Snape just โmade that ย rule upโ, if he abuses the punishmentโฆ or if it is the complete opposite.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Dunno, but I hope itโs really ย hurting him, said Ron bitterly. ย (Harry seems to understand Snape badly; but it seems to apply the other way ย around as well: Snape might get a wrong idea of Harry and ย misunderstand/misinterpret him. Ron & Quirell relish in Snapeโs pain of ย having his leg mangled.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย He wanted Quidditch Through the Ages ย back, to take his mind off his nerves about tomorrow. Why should he be afraid of Snape? (Ah, indeed. Harry tries to get ย rational.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Rather you than me, they said together, but Harry had an idea that Snape wouldnโt refuse if there were other ย teachers listening. (So either teachers are close to Snape, or itโs just ย Harryโs imagination & lack of trust in adults expressing themselves. It ย can also be explained in how the Durlseys were never fair to Harry and how ย Hagrid dismissed Harryโs concerns about Snape.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย He pushed the door ajar and peered inside โ and a horrible scene met his eyes. (Horrible because of the mangled ย leg? Or horrible because of Snape and Filch? Why doesnโt Snape go to Pomfrey ย โ does he have issues with her? How come the closest person the local Squib ย has is Snape?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape and Filch were inside, alone. Snape was holding his robes above ย his knees. One of his legs was bloody and mangled. Filch was handing Snape ย bandages. (Oh Ron, yes, it did hurt him)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Blasted thing, Snape was saying. How are you ย supposed to keep your eyes on all three heads at once? (First time Snape ย curses.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย POTTER!
Snapeโs face was twisted with fury as he dropped his robes quickly to hide ย his leg. Harry gulped.
I just wondered if I could have my book back.
GET OUT! OUT! ย (Bad memories maybe? Notice how heโs very private. I donโt think what upset ย him was Harry seeing the wound, rather than his legsโฆ)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย And Iโd bet my broomstick he ย let that troll in, to create a diversion. (Well, as quick-witted you try to ย be Harry, you just lost that broomstick.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Hermioneโs eyes were wide.
No โ he wouldnโt, she said. I know heโs not very nice, but he ย wouldnโt try and steal something Dumbledore was keeping safe. (โI know heโs ย not very nice but he stays loyal to Dumbledoreโ. ย Also, what do you mean โnot very niceโ? Is ย it an euphemism, or is it true? Besides Harryโs first lesson, how is he โnot ย very niceโ?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Honestly, Hermione, you think ย all teachers are saints or something, said Ron. Iโm with Harry. I wouldnโt put anything past Snape. ย But whatโs he after? Whatโs that dog guarding? (Lol it reminds snaters when ย they scream murder โyou try to paint Snape as a saint!โ Anyway, trying to ย steal whatโs down the trapdoor is a serious accusation because then Snape ย would be a Dark wizard working against Dumbledore. Ron who distrusts Snape, ย despising Hermioneโs argument by saying โyou think all teachers are saintsโ ย aka youโre too gullible. But itโs Ron whoโs in the wrong. As for Hermione, ย itโs possible that after discovering the truth about Snape, she drew the ย conclusion that she was right, and that Snape being โnot niceโ has nothing to ย do with his true loyalties โ maybe thatโs too quick of a conclusion, because ย it makes her think he couldnโt be a Dark Wizard. She seems to stand by that ย idea though, because later, she insists that Snape killing Dumbledore doesnโt ย make him evil, somehowโฆ but maybe Iโm going too far. Why does Ron distrust ย Snape, him who was the first telling Harry not to care about Snape? Why does ย he start to hate Snape โ because of the book? Or only because, as he says, ย heโs with Harry, and he came to believe what he says? Is it also because Ron, ย being bullied along with Harry by Draco, came to hate Slytherin even more, ย and thus hate their Head of House, who also happens to have once ย congratulated Draco? Ron puts Harryโs word over Hermione, which shows his ย loyalty but also how biased he is. What is that excuse Ron? Why wouldnโt you ย put anything past Snape now, when Snape hasnโt done anything except for the ย first class (which you dismissed) and the book? Their evidence is too little ย to make such accusations. He directly assumes Snape tries to steal the ย guarded thing, why? Itโs here: Snape is not very nice, though we donโt get ย anything more than the first Potions lesson and the book incident, but Ron ย and Harry are quick to assume the worst of him. Itโs blatantly unfair. And it ย turns out they were wrong all along.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย He tried to empty his mind โ he needed to sleep, he had to, ย he had his first Quidditch match in a few hours โ but the expression on Snapeโs face when Harry had seen his leg wasnโt ย easy to forget. (A furious expression? Why is it so unforgivable? Was it ย that distorted โ and does it come from how Harry has seen Snape a little too ย much? Also, empty your mindโฆ Occlumency.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย I knew it, Hermione gasped. Snape โ look. ย (Hermione changes her mind and tries to find a reason to call Snape the ย culprit.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Heโs doing something โ jinxing the broom, said Hermione. ย (Assuming. Theyโre quite implying Snapeโs trying to kill a child. We went ย from doing something > jinxing pretty quickโฆ Oh well. She didnโt know.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย She didnโt even stop to say sorry as she knocked Professor Quirell ย headfirst into the row in front. Reaching Snape, she crouched down, pulled ย out her wand and whispered a few, well ย chosen words. (Why arenโt they warning a teacher??? Is Snape the only one ย protecting Harry?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย It took perhaps thirty seconds ย for Snape to realise that he was on fire. A sudden yelp told her she had done her job. Scooping the fire off him ย into a little jar in her pocket she scrambled back along the row โ Snape would never know what had happened. ย (You better pray he doesnโt Legilimize you.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย It was enough. Up in the air, Harry was suddenly able to chamber back to his broom. (Why did Quirell stop ย though, why didnโt he try to mutter another curse? Second, did Harryโs broom ย stop jerking from the moment Quirell was knocked out, or 30 seconds after ย Snape was put on fire? From the moment Snape realized he was on fire? Did he ย stop staring at Harry from the moment he realized he was on fire, or before? ย Was Snape still muttering when Quirell was knocked out? My theory is that ย Dark Magic seems to linger even though Quirell hadnโt had the eye contact ย anymore. The narrative forces to cast Snape as a potential villainโฆ But it ย leaves so many questions unresolved. And I just had the image of Snape ย staring at Harry and muttering non-stop so ย hard he set himself on fire. Did Snape think it was his magic leaking? ย Itโs a Snape going Eminem on Harryโฆ Last thing: Snape seems to cast spells that are not just selected words but some ย kind of prayer. I think heโs the only one who does that. Snape mutters ย non-stop when he saves Harry from a Dark jinx, sings Dracoโs wounds shut from ย his Dark spell, mutters under his breath when he locks Dumbledoreโs ย Dark/Horcrux curse in his hand.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย It was Snape, Ron was explaining. Hermione and I saw him. He was ย cursing your broomstick, muttering, he wouldnโt take his eyes off you. (When ย Snape searches a reason for Harryโs guilty looks and wonders if heโs been ย breaking the rules, itโs shown as unfair. When the Trio makes quick ย assumptions about Snape and search the reasons to cast him out, itโs somehow ย okay. Snape muttering was as suspicious as Harry looking guilty twiceโฆ The ย story might give clues as to why, but the narrative is quite unfair.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Rubbish, said Hagrid, who hadnโt heard a word of what had gone ย on next to him in the stands. Why would Snape do somethinโ like that? (A ย nice parallel to when he dismissed Harryโs concerns over why Snape seemed to ย hate him. By the time this happens, Harry doesnโt trust him enough anymore. If ย Hagrid was wrong in thinking Snape hating Harry was rubbish, then we can ย think that heโs wrong in thinking Snape innocent. The narrative outright ย gives a reason for Hagrid to be misled: he hasnโt heard a word of what ย happened next to him. But even if he had, would he think that Snape had ย cursed the broom? Is Hagrid calling rubbish what Hermione and Ron saw, or ย their interpretation of what they ย saw? Either way, Hagridโs question doesnโt focus on that. It focuses on the ย reason Snape would curse the broom. But Harry already has one, one Hagrid ย dismissed earlier: Snape hates Harry. It is logical and fair to think that ย someone hating you wants you illโฆ But how the book persists and goes out of ย its way to cast Snape as the villain before leading us here is unnerving. ย Theyโre always expecting the worse out of Snape. Second, arenโt the kids more ย terrified than that to think Snape tried to kill Harry? Why isnโt any teacher ย leading an investigation? Even Hermione who loves teachers doesnโt think to ย ask help from Flitwick or Dumbledore or anything, when they speaking about their own teacher trying to kill their 11 ย yo friend.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย I found out something about him, he told Hagrid. He tried to get past that three-headed dog at Halloweโen. It bit ย him. We think he was trying to ย steal whatever itโs guarding. (Harry uses a conclusion as his first ย explanation. He could have said โIโve found him limping and his leg was ย mangled, torn off, and he mentioned the Cerberus while talking to Filch.โ ย Instead he says directly โheโs been trying to get past the dogโ. Maybe Iโm digging too deep butโฆ well, it makes ย me feel uneasy.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Hagrid dropped to teapot. How do you know about Fluffy? He said.
Fluffy?
Yeah โ heโs mine โ bought him off a Greek chappie I met in the pub lasโ year โ I lent him to ย Dumbledore to guard the โ (Did Quirell say he was Greek, or does he have a ย Greek accent/does he speak Greek? Hagrid doesnโt ever mention that Snapeโs ย role is to protect whateverโs down there. It could have divided the readers ย with more interpretations if he had done: some would think that explains ย Snapeโs presence near the dog and maybe theyโre exaggerating, some would ย think thatโs really dangerous to have a reason to approach Fluffy. Instead ย the book AGAIN tries to cast Snape as the villain. Hagrid would rather talk ย about Fluffy that explaining Snapeโs role. Well, heโs right to be concernedโฆ ย but he could have said the info later. Oh, and Hagrid, more than drinking โamber ย liquidโ in front of Harry and the Dursleys, more than being called/suspected ย a drunkard by Draco, talks about he plays in pubs. Is this the fate that ย awaits those who are expelled from Hogwarts, along with Squibs?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Rubbish, said Hagrid again. Snapeโs a ย Hogwarts teacher, heโd do nothinโ of the sort. (Weak excuse Hagridโฆ Quirell ย was a teacher as well. 3rd time you said Rubbish, and 3rd ย timeโs the charm I guess.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย So why did he just try and kill Harry? Cried Hermione. (Assumptionsโฆ)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย The afternoonโs events certainly seemed to have changed her mind about ย Snape. (But she does say โI knew itโ as though she was already suspecting him ย during Quidditch?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย I know a jinx when I see one, Hagrid, Iโve read all about them! Youโve got to keep eye contact, and ย Snape wasnโt blinking at all, I saw him! (Hermioneโฆ youโre wrong. Reading in ย books doesnโt make your assumptions right, itโs not enough. Itโs soโฆ arrogant ย on your part. Youโre only a first year dammit. Havenโt you read about jinx ย counters???)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Iโm tellinโ yeh, yer wrong! Said Hagrid hotly. I donโt know why ย Harryโs broom acted like that, but Snape wouldnโt try anโ kill a student! ย Now, listen to me, all three of yeh โ yer ย meddlinโ in things that donโt concern yeh. Itโs dangerous. (Or yes it ย concerns them, at least the attempted murder. Why is Hagrid convinced Snape ย wouldnโt try to kill a student? Why does he seem upset when the Trio accuses ย Snape? Does it have to do with how he seems to know what happened to Snape, ย or is it because Dumbledore trusts Snape, or is Hagrid done with them? Also, ย Hagrid is the first Snover that defends Snape against Snaters. Isnโt that ย ironic.)
Chp 12 - Quidditch
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Worst of all were Professor Snapeโs classes down in the dungeons, where their breath rose in a mist ย before them and they kept as close as ย possible to their hot cauldrons. (1) cauldrons are dangerous for ย children, Potions shouldnโt be taught at all to them, damn Wizarding world, ย 2) itโs not logical. The dungeons are underground and thus isolated from the ย wind and the cold weather outside. Theyโve got a lake near them to regulate ย the temperature through the stones, better than winds in the badly isolated ย towers. The dungeons, being isolated, should be cool and even a little warm. ย After hours of heating cauldrons with fire, the classroom should become hot ย enough for the day. But alright: Harry has Potions in the morning, as it ย takes place after breakfast for one or two hours before they can go see ย Hagrid on Fridays, and thus the classroom hasnโt been heated yet. But isnโt ย it such a good coincidence Snapeโs class has another reason to be called the worst? Though why donโt wizards ย leave magical fires to warm up? Donโt they have a time-system thatโd create a ย fire around 30 minutes before the first students come into the classrooms? ย Donโt they have instant warming charms? Why donโt they teach/spell them on ย students? Leaving a fire all night unsupervised in a Potions classroom seems ย dangerous enough, but theyโve got magic and spell! Why are the wizards so dumb ย and unpractical?!)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Ron dived at Malfoy just as Snape came up ย the stairs.
WEALSEY!
Ron let go the front of Malfoyโs robes.
He was provoked, Professor Snape, said Hagrid, sticking his huge hairy ย face out from behind the tree. Malfoy was insultinโ his family.
Be that as it may, fighting is against Hogwarts rules, Hagrid, said Snape silkily. ย Five points from Gryffindor, Weasley, and be grateful it isnโt more. Move along, all of you. (EXACTLY. Also ย he calls him Hagrid J)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย I hate ย them both, said Harry. Malfoy and Snape. (BUT SNAPE WAS RIGHT THOUGH. The ย problem is that Snape hasnโt punished Malfoy. We all know though thatโs not ย something he can do, strategically speaking (Draco being Luciusโ son).
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Because how else were they going to find out what Snape was going to ย steal? (They arenโt alerting the other teachers, oh my Godโฆ What do they ย think that can do against a gown-up Wizard who knows Dark Magic? Ron and ย Hermione shouldnโt have issues about trusting adults, but they still donโt ย ask the help of a Professor. I canโt believe it could just be because of ย Hagrid. They could know Hagrid was a bit gullible, but other teachers like ย McGonagall or Flitwick? If they donโt ask the other teachers โ although ย previously Harry thought that Snape would be milder near other teachers and ย so those teachers could defend him โ is it because they know theyโre too ย close to Snape, meaning Snape has made friends with the other professors in ย the end? Also, Hermione, when youโre searching for a book, donโt you know ย Accio, donโt you have any reference to it? Canโt you use Accio Books of ย Nicholas Flamel, or ask Mrs Pince? Or are we admitting you donโt know things ย and thus canโt recognize Dark Magic from afar?
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย [Harry and Ron] were plotting ways ย of getting Malfoy expelled, which were fun to talk about even if they wouldnโt work. (Imagine if ย they want Malfoy expelled after his pathetic belittling, then thereโs every ย right for Snape to want to expel the Marauders; except it wasnโt โfunโ. Plus ย Malfoy too had tried to expel Harry with the fake duel, maybe with the bought ย broom, and maybe with the Remembrall taunt.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย You asked me to come directly to ย you, Professor, if anyone was wandering around at night, ย and somebodyโs been in the library โ Restricted Section.
To his horror, it was Snape who replied.
The Restricted section? Well, they canโt be ย that far, weโll catch them. (Hmโฆ ย Interesting. Why is Filch precising this โ is it because itโs a new ย precaution taken for Harry?
Chp 13 โ The Mirror of ย Erised
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snapeโs refereeing this time, and heโll ย be looking for any excuse to knock points off Gryffindor!
Weโve just got to make sure we play a clean game, so Snape hasnโt got an excuse to pick on ย us. (Snape is described as unpleasant because he applies the rules ย strictly and punishes easily if theyโre not respected; but here, itโs not a question ย of Snape punishing them without a valid reason โ contrary to whatโs going to ย be said later. Itโs really โlooking for excusesโ to give penaltiesโฆ but are ย they being fair though? Theyโve got nothing to fear if they respect the ย rules.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Which was very well, thought Harry, but he had another reason for not ย wanting Snape near him while he was playing Quidditch.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Harry told the other two about Snapeโs sudden, sinister desire to be a Quidditch referee. (This is funny)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย The idea of overtaking ย Slytherin in the House Championship was wonderful, no one had done it for ย nearly seven years, but would they be allowed to, with such a biased referee? (Hypocrite. You dare say that after ย you got your broom, your bent rules, a biased commentator and a referee that was staring at Flint?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Harry didnโt know whether he was imagining it or not, but he seemed to keep running into Snape ย wherever he went. At times, he even wondered whether Snape was following him, trying to catch him on his own. (Ironic because it seems Snapeโs ย following Harry to protect him in case Quirell tries to find Harry on his ย own.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Potions lessons were turning into a ย sort of weekly torture, Snape was so horrible to Harry. (How? ย And why only now?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Could Snape possibly know theyโd found out about the Philosopherโs ย Stone? Harry didnโt see how he could โ yet he sometimes had the horrible feeling that Snape could read minds. ย (Harry will have the same feeling at the beginning of CoS. Is Snape reading ย Harryโs mind? Is he becoming horrible because of stress, because of spy duty, ย because he sees that Harry starts to loathe him and judges him unfairly? ย Snape is horrible to Harry, but how? Is it Harryโs perception โ standing in a ย room near the one you think tried to kill you, despising Slytherin, looking ย carefully for signs Snape is biased? Thereโs no example of what โhorrible ย thingsโ Snape is doing to Harry, how are we supposed to believe it hasnโt ย anything to do with Harryโs own, exaggerated and unfair bias? Those words, โturning into a sort of weekly tortureโ, are sandwiched between Harry unable to understand Snapeโs actions, ย getting paranoiac and misinterpreting them, and a feeling that Snape can read ย minds โ which is true, but remains a feeling mingled with paranoia and guilt. ย How to trust Harryโs point of view, especially when you read โSnape was so ย horrible to Harryโ, which seems too weak to believe? There are constant ย attempts in the book to demonize Snape, from Harry or from the story aka bad ย luck, these words are strong, but too tricky/unable to be used because ย theyโre plunged in a context of complete anti-Snape bias.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Finish the game before Snape ย can favour Hufflepuff too much. (Ah? So now itโs not just favouring ย Slytherin, itโs trying to favour Hufflepuff? As if making Gryffindor lose was ย more important than making Slytherin win โ or is it because if Gryffindor ย loses against Hufflepuff and Slytherin wins against Puff then itโll make up ย for losing ย against Gryff? Plus saying ย that when Snape doesnโt ever give any points to anybody? And canโt really ย punish children of DE without putting himself in risk? If you fear so much ย about referee bias, why donโt you hire a second referee?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Perhaps that was why Snape was ย looking so angry as the teams marched on to the pitch, something that Ron ย noticed, too. (Ah, Dumbledore in the stands โ though why wasnโt he there last ย time when surely he suspected Quirell โ you think Snape was angry about THAT)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Iโve never seen Snape look ย so mean, he told Hermione. (Itโs ย to ward off the Death Eaters)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape had just awarded Hufflepuff a penalty because George Wealsey had hit a Bludger at him. (Okay, so in ย real life, itโs red card and instant ejection from the game. Also Iโve read ย that if you were in a real competition, youโd get fined and suspended. If ย your move was intentional, youโd go to anger management training. Considering ย Snapeโs also a teacher, if it was ย intentional, then youโd get counselling/a report. He only awarded a penalty. Theyโre lucky they donโt have any rules ย to eject a player for Quidditch. Though it means that players could ย threaten/beat the referee without much consequences than a penalty.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape awarded Hufflepuff another penalty for no reason at all. (I doubt that, after what just happened.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Harry had suddenly gone into a spectacular dive, which drew gasps and ย cheers from the crowd.
Come on, Harry! Hermione screamed, leaping on ย to her seat to watch as Harry sped ย straight at Snape.
Up in the air, Snape turned on his broomstick ย just in time to see something ย scarlet shoot past him, missing him by ย inches. (I remind you that Snape was an ass at Quidditch before.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย As Gryffindors came spilling on to the pitch, he saw Snape land ย nearby, white-faced and tight-lipped. ย (Got a good scary moment I get it. Plus Gryff losing, and you being almost ย hit twice, while probably receiving booโsโฆ Yeah.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape spat ย bitterly on the ground. (Salty)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย He recognized the figureโs prowling ย walk.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Oh, I thought weโd keep this private, said Snape, his voice icy. Students arenโt supposed to know about ย the Philosopherโs stone after all. (WAIT โ does Snape think Harry knew ย about the Stone because of Quirell, that Quirell intended to have Harry ย search it??? Itโs linked to the passage where Harry wonders if Snape could ย read minds and know that Harry knew about the Stone.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Weโll have another little chat soon, when youโve had time to think things over and decided where ย your loyalties lie. (Theme of loyalty, ironic coming from a defected DE.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Quirell would have done some anti-Dark Arts spell which Snape needs to ย break through โ (so ironic)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย So you mean the Stoneโs only safe as long as Quirell stands up to Snape? Said Hermione in alarm.
Chp 14 โ Norbert the ย Norwegian Ridgeback
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape was sweeping about in his usual bad temper, which surely meant that the Stone was safe. ย Whenever Harry passed Quirell these days he ย gave him an encouraging sort of smile, and Ron had started telling people off for laughing at Quirellโs stutter. ย (I wish theyโd done that for Snape. I need Snape-appreciating fic)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย You donโt understand, ย Professor, Harry Potterโs coming โ heโs got a dragon!
What utter ย rubbish! How dare you tell such lies! Come on โ I shall see Professor Snape about you, Malfoy! (McGonagall trust ย Snape THAT much. Moody will also drag Draco to see Snape in GoFโฆ after ย McGonagallโs told him about this.)
Chp 15 โ The Forbidden ย Forest
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย I think Iโve got a good idea ย of whatโs been going on, said Professor McGonagall. It doesnโt take a genius ย to work it out. You fed Draco Malfoy ย some cock-and-bull story about a dragon, trying to get him out of bed and ย into trouble. Iโve already caught him. I suppose you think itโs funny that Longbottom here heard the ย story and believed it, too? (Werewolf prankโฆ Maybe McGonagall heard the full ย story from Snapeโฆ In any case, she herself says that feeding such story to ย make a student break curfew is a disgusting act that merits punishment. ย Though sending them into the Forestโฆ)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย [McGonagall:] Donโt tell me what I can and canโt do, ย Potter. (Ahhโฆ here we have evidence that students complaining about a ย teacherโs choice is forbidden.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Fifty? Harry gasped โ they would lose ย the lead, the lead heโd won in the last Quidditch match. (Soโฆ Houses can win ย the House Cupโฆ by winning points in Quidditch? Where a Seeker can win 150 ย points for catching a little ball? This points system is bullshit. It takes ย forever for students to win them by studying. Also, retrieving 50 points from ย 3 students equals to 150, which is a lotโฆ but which is only what a Seeker ย wins. Oh, and apparently putting yourself in mortal danger from a troll is ย only 5 points worth, but being out at night is 50? I think itโs because the ย book assumes the reader makes the link that Hermione didnโt truly deserve ย punishment as she hadnโt done anything wrongโฆ But not in McGonagallโs eyes, ย who believes her lie. It makes McGonagall incoherent and extremely unfair. ย The bookโs story is very badly made. Ah but โ no โ not even that. McGonagall ย only retrieved 20 points from Malfoy + detention, so sheโs taking 30 points ย more away from Harry and Hermione for feeding false info โ from what she ย thinks, at least. But Neville? She thinks that Neville is quite innocent in ย this affair โ but then she retrieves 50 points from HIM? McGonagall retrieves ย insane amounts of points.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Now get back to bed, all of ย you. Iโve never been more ashamed of Gryffindor students. (1) ย guilt-trip, 2) are you sure?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย A hundred and fifty points lost. That ย put Gryffindor in last place. In one night, theyโd ruined any chance Gryffindor had had for the House Cup. ย Harry felt as though the bottom had dropped out of his stomach. (Why do 150 points ย suffice to ruin all chances to win, when theyโve still got a match against ย Ravenclaw, and months before the end of term? Is Slytherin THAT MUCH in the ย lead? Or is it a plothole โ a failure in Rowlingโs attempt to make the ย punishment tragic, to dramatize it?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Harry didnโt sleep all night. He could ย hear Neville sobbing into his pillow ย for what seemed like hours. (OMG McGonagall made Neville cry, retrieved ย 50 points from him when he was partially innocent, but of course Snape is the ย worst, and Neville should only fear Bellatrix, and he made Hermione tear upโฆ ย Just look at what happened when McGonagall intervened.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย He knew Neville, like himself, was dreading the dawn. What would happen ย when the rest of Gryffindor found out what theyโd done? (Points system is ย intrinsically based on common punishment. It uses pressure from the House ย itself to force the members to respect the rules โ pressure that can result ย in ostracization, isolation, shaming, that puts students at risk of being ย bullied. In one book, Hermione started to quite harass Harry and Ron about ย that, and now itโs the whole House โ worse, the whole school. The House which ย also consists in students the age of attending high school. Wonderful. ย Hogwarts is a shitty school.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย And then the story spread ย (from Draco?): Harry Potter, the famous Harry Potter, their hero of two ย Quidditch matches, had lost them all those points, him and a couple of other ย stupid first-years.
Even Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff turned on him, because everyone had been ย longing to see Slytherin lose the House Cup. (1) anti-Slytherin by 3 ย Houses, 2) even other Houses can blame/hate Harry. Hasnโt McGonagall figured ย what would happen if she punished them this hard?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Everywhere Harry went, people pointed and didnโt trouble to ย lower their voices as they insulted ย him. (Consequences of points system.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Fred and George have lost ย loads of points in all the time theyโve been here, and people still like them.
Theyโve never lost a hundred and fifty points in one ย go, though, have they? Said Harry miserably.
Well โ no, Ron admitted. (So either the ย twins were never caught, either their punishments were less severe. But then ย we remember that the person said to punish them the most for their ย shenanigans is Snape. Snape punished them, but theyโre still liked by the ย school โ maybe itโs another instance of โI hate Snape and heโs punished you ย so it must be unfair, I like you even if you break rulesโ. Snape punished ย them, but he never went to retrieve 150 points, or at least enough points to ย turn the Gryffindors against them. McGonagallโs punishment had far worse ย consequences.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Heโd had it with sneaking around and spying.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย But even Quidditch had lost ย its fun. The rest of the team wouldnโt ย speak to Harry during practice, and if they had to speak about him, they ย called him โthe Seekerโ.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Hermione and Neville were suffering too. They didnโt have as bad a time as Harry, because they werenโt as ย well known, but nobody would speak to ย them either. Hermione had stopped ย drawing attention to herself in class, keeping her head down and working ย in silence. (Hermione and Neville in one go! Also peculiar formulation. ย Hermione likes to โdraw attention to herselfโ, or is it what people think ย sheโs doing? Related to the know-it-all scene.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย All the same, heโd have ย gambled twelve Philosopherโs Stones that Snape had just left the room, and ย from what Harry had just heard, Snape would be walking with a new spring in ย his step โ Quirell seemed to have given in at last. (Well, Harry, you lost ย your bet.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย But weโve got not proof! Said Harry. (Exactly)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Who do you think theyโll ย believe, him or us? (The staff believes Snape, trusts him. Heโs not out of ย bounds)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Itโs not exactly a secret we hate him, ย Dumbledoreโll think we made it up to get him sacked. (Damn that teaโs hot)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Filch wouldnโt help us if his life ย depended on it, heโs too friendly with ย Snape. (The ancient DE is the closest to Filch. We assume itโs because ย theyโre both filthy greasy adults who love to punish students. We could also ย consider Filch is a bad example of a Squib to set in school as it trains ย students to hate and despise Squibs โ weโll see that in CoS from Ron and HBP ย from Harry โ which increases discrimination, even in the Light Side. Snape ย befriending him is interestingโฆ)
Chp 16 โ Through the ย Trapdoor
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape made them all nervous, ย breathing own their necks while they tried to remember how to ย make a Forgetfulness Potion. (I ย sense some pretty wicked sense of humour. Snape breathes on their necks โ ย probably to check their dangerous ย cauldrons/potions โ which is the same thing weโre told about Madam Pince ย making Harry nervous near the Restricted Section. For all those who think ย Madam Pince is actually Madam Prince.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Anyway, weโve never had any ย proof Snape found out how to get past Fluffy. He nearly had his leg ripped ย off once, heโs not going to try it again in a hurry. (Ah)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Itโs sort of secret, he said, ย but he wished at once he hadnโt because Professor ย McGonagallโs nostrils flared. (I see Snapeโs not the only one. He does ย the same thing in GoF, although itโs noted he seemed to try and sniff Harry ย out.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย โItโs tonight,โ said Harry, once he was sure Professor McGonagall was ย out of earshot. โSnapeโs going through ย the trapdoor tonight. Heโs found out everything he needs and now heโs got ย Dumbledore out of the way. He sent that note, I bet the Ministry of Magic ย will get a real shock when Dumbledore turns up.โ
โBut what can we โโ (Snape hears this, he ย might conclude Harryโs trying to break curfew again to go through the ย trapdoor. Yet in this case, Why didnโt Snape wait on the Third Floor corridor ย for Harry & Co?)
[โฆ] Good afternoon, he ย said smoothly.
They stared ย at him.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Hanging around like this, people will think youโre up to something. ย (People like you, Snape? Just like you did with the Quidditch book?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Be warned Potter โ any more night-time wanderings and I will personally make sure you are expelled. ย Good day to you. (Greeted him ย twice? Is it sarcasm/passive-aggressive? Is it just a threat as Snape should ย know from Dumbledore that Harry is better safe at Hogwarts? But indeed, Snape ย is not pleasant. Taunting on the Gryffindorsโ points, threat of expulsion ย (although McGonagall threatened her students in her first class) โ I think ย most of these are technically allowed but they put pressure on the student ย and justifies the need to consult the parents. Although, now that I think of ย it, if parents were complaining to Snape about what he just said, Snape could ย very well say โYour son has broken Hogwartsโ rules by wandering around at ย night and it does deserve expulsion ย from Hogwarts; Iโm giving him a warning because he talked about going through ย a trapdoor at nighttime and he wonโt just lose points for this next timeโ. Heโs ย justified and in his right. BUTโฆ he only addresses this to Harry, which is ย biased.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape came out and asked what I was doing, so I said I was waiting for Flitwick, and Snape went out to get him, and Iโve only just got away. I donโt know where Snape went. (Good teacher behavior?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย He pocketed it to use it on ย Fluffy โ he didnโt feel much like ย singing. (Oh, give me some more singing Snape)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Looks like a harp, said Ron. Snape must have left it there. (Snape the harp musician โ his ย long fingers of a Potions Master playing on the stringsโฆ)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย It wasnโt ordinary fire ย either; it was purple. At the same ย instant, black flames shot up in ย the doorway leading onwards. (Beautiful. ย Associating purple and black with Snape by the way. I want fanart of Snape ย with purple or black fire. But I have a question. Why didnโt Quirell take the ย potion to go forward with him? He wouldnโt be able to go back through the ย black flames otherwise. Or did he just go through the flames unharmed? How ย did Dumbledore go through the black flames to save Harry โ does this mean ย there are spells powerful enough to go past the potion riddle?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย This isnโt magic โ itโs logic โ a puzzle. A lot of the greatest wizards havenโt got an ounce of logic, ย theyโd be stuck in here for ever. (Snape is the one who made a test that ย everyone from wizards to Muggles can solve. Snape is the one associated with ย Hermione. Did you know we can reverse-solve the riddle to find the 2-3 ย combinations which allow us to solve them with the riddle and Hermioneโs ย clue?)
Chp 17 โ The Man with ย Two Faces
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Severus? Quirell laughed and ย it wasnโt his usual quivering treble, either, but cold and sharp. Yes, ย Severus does seem the type, doesnโt he? So ย useful to have him swooping around like an overgrown bat. Next to ย him, who would suspect p-p-poor st-stuttering P-Professor Quirell? (Open ย evidence that you shouldnโt trust appearancesโฆ and to think Harry and Ron ย were showing support for Quirell, not an ounce for Snape laterโฆ)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Another few seconds and Iโd ย have got you off that broom. Iโd have ย managed it before then if Snape ย hadnโt been muttering a counter-curse, trying to save you. (If Snape ย hadnโt acted, Harry would have died at 11.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย All the other teachers ย thought Snape was trying to stop Gryffindor winning, he did make himself ย unpopularโฆ (Willing to make himself unpopularโฆ Did they know what had ย truly happened later? Grosse ambiance Snape)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Unfortunately, while everyone ย else was running around looking for it, Snape, who already suspected me, went ย straight to the third floor to head me off. (Did he suspect Quirell before or ย after Dumbledore told him to be wary of him?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย And not only did my troll fail to beat you to death, that ย three-headed dog didnโt even manage to bite Snapeโs lef off properly. (1) I want leg-missing ย veteran Snape. 2) Um, but thereโs something weird. Did Quirell let the troll ย lose so the professors would try to find the troll and heโd be able to see ย what protected the Stone? But he didnโt need to, he could have spied the door ย while everyone was sleeping, or eating, or something. Did he let the troll ย loose as to beat Harry to death? But that assumes Harry would search for the ย troll, which he wouldnโt have done if Hermione hadnโt needed help. In this case, ย either Quirell/Voldy is an idiot, or they predicted Harrywould try to fight ย the troll, on the sole assumption Harry would emulate his father. OR they ย knew about Hermione crying in the bathroom, suspected Harry and Ron would try ย to save her, and made their move from then on. But there are more effective ย ways to kill Harry. You only need Harry being sent somewhere where heโd be ย alone with Quirell/Voldemort and be offered to be either part of the Dark ย Side or killed. 3) Did the dog mangle Snapeโs leg during the troll event? But ย his limping gets mentioned only later, when Harry and Ron hang out with ย Hermione. Only in the films do we see Snapeโs leg bitten near the troll. Plus ย if Snape had interrupted Quirell near the dog and he had been bitten, why ย wouldnโt Quirell use the opportunity to attack him, kill him or help the ย Cerberus kill Snape? Quirell would have had the perfect crime. The Cerberus ย could even have eaten Snape, and youโd have no way to tell Snape had been ย stunned or something, AND Fluffy would have to be executed, leaving the Stone ย defenseless for a time. Voldemort IS said to be merciless even to his ย followers. Maybe Quirell saw what happened to Snapeโs leg after the troll incident? That seems ย the most plausibleโฆ Also a real school would have closed if a troll had been ย threatening students like that, if Harryโs broom was attacked with Dark ย Magic, nearly killing him, and if there was a dog able to bit off a teacherโs ย leg accessible through the use of Alohomora.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย He does not forgive mistakes easily. ย When I failed to steal the Stone from Gringotts, he was most displeased. He punished meโฆ decided ย he would have to keep a closer watch ย on meโฆ (What to think, then, when in HBP Snape, after Luciusโ punishment ย in having his son put in almost-certain deathโs way, says that Voldemort ย โwasnโt pleasedโโฆ)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย What I want more than ย anything else in the world at the ย moment, he thought, is to find the Stone before Quirell does. (And here ย we have a MOST interesting passage. The object supposed to show you the ย deepest, most desperate desire in the world can show a desire that appears AT ย THE MOMENT. In a world that allows that for the deepest desire, then it ย should allow that for the deepest fearโฆ particularly Nevilleโs Boggart after ย having poor interactions with Snape twice just before. I think it reinforced ย the theory.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย But your mother neednโt have ย diedโฆ she was trying to protect youโฆ ย (Lily tried to protect Harry. Snape tried to save him. And in the end, they ย both did. Do we have to wonder why Snape has the Patronus of Harryโs mother?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Professor Snape, Harry.
Yes, him โ ย Quirell said he hates me because he hated by father. Is that true?
Well, they ย did rather detest each other. Not ย unlike yourself and Mr Malfoy. And then, your father did something Snape could never forgive.
What?
He saved his life. (โฆโฆโฆ)
What?
Yesโฆ said ย Dumbledore dreamily. Funny, the way ย peopleโs minds work, isnโt it? Professor ย Snape couldnโt bear being in your fatherโs debtโฆ I do believe he worked ย so hard to protect you this year because ย he felt that would make him and your father quits. Then he could go back ย to hating your fatherโs memory in ย peaceโฆ
โฆ.
โฆ.
This is the ย most disgusting thing I have read lately.
You said you ย didnโt want to lie, Dumbledore?
You just did. ย Horribly. And you know it. Just as you know the truth.
You know, ย before, Harry could have sought Snape to talk with him and maybe, maybe, asked for forgiveness to have ย wrongfully accused him.
It is ย Dumbledore who sets Harry and Snape definitely apart.
He could have ย told him that Harryโs father had tormented Snape so horribly he couldnโt ever ย forgive him.
Snapeโs ย hatred, Hagridโs hesitancy, Quirellโs admission that Snape and James hated ย each other โ all of these are buckled up with the message that he was ย unfairly ungrateful to James, and a mean pathetic villain in the end.
The book ends ย with the idea that Snape saved Harry not because he cared about his life, but ย because he had a debt against a man thatโs been presented as good until now. Meaning ย Snape could still turn against Harry later.
The problem ย is that Snape isnโt saving Harry to pay a debt to James. Heโs saving him as ย he wishes to extend Lilyโs will and make her death not in vain. We could go ย further and say that he wanted to truly change and repent.
Dumbledore ย makes Harry think that Snape was kind of โforcedโ to pay back his debt for ย Jamesโ supposedly honourable action, and that he hated Harry because he hated ย his father, as well as because he ย was unwilling to save Harry.
In DH, we see ย clearly that Snape is horrified with the idea of sending Harry to his death ย โlike a pig to slaughterโ; in fact in CoS, Snape gets worried when he hears ย that a student has been captured by the monster.
However, ย these things are never openly acknowledged. Dumbledore is willing to present ย James as a hero, while you have to dig through a lot to realize Snape became ย one as well.
He never said ย that he might not only hate James for being the one who saved him, but also ย because, as Snape was forced to keep the truth of what happened to himself, ย James was presented as a pure hero at heart and this info was used against ย Snape by Lily who obviously started to defend the Marauders and mistrust ย their victim. The only time the situation is explained is only in a book ย where Harry fully antagonizes Snape: that James had no choice but to save ย Snape if he wanted to save his friends and himself, and that it hadnโt been a ย selfless act (at least not entirely). But since Snape is meant to be hated, ย itโs easy to cast him in the wrong. Never is it said that if James hadnโt ย saved Snape, Sirius would have turned a murderer, Remus a victim of his own ย best friendโs plans, and James an accomplice of the murder, at least at fault ย for failure in duty to rescue.
Do you have a ย debt for someone whose friend put you in the very mortal situation forcing ย them save you?
Dumbledore ย compared the Maraudersโ bullying against Snape to Harry and Malfoy when ย Malfoy hasnโt done a quarter of what James did to Snape, and when thatโs ย something that borders between rivalry and unsuccessful harassment rather ย than heavy abuse.
And we have ย to keep in mind that the one who was the reason the info about why James had ย to save Snape spread, the one who silenced Snape and forced the misunderstood ย event, the one who participated in hurting him and having him bullied ย relentlessly, the one who canonically gaslighted Snape, was Dumbledore himself.
Before, it ย was a combination of mistrust, lack of information and misinterpretation, as ย well as anti-Slytherin bias and fear for his life, that had kept Harry away ย from Snape. Now, Dumbledore, by his lie of omission and obviously distorted ย interpretation of Snapeโs motives, has effectively cut Harryโs trust for the ย professor who just spent the last year saving and protecting him. Snapeโs ย credit of his salvaging actions is robbed from him.
I donโt even ย understand Dumbledoreโs logic behind, other than trying to glorify James and ย flatter Harry. The only thing he promised not to say was about Snapeโs ย allegiance to Lily. In its stead, Dumbledore spoke about a sort of allegiance ย to James. Worse, instead of trying to mitigate Harry and Snapeโs connections, ย he impends it.
On one hand, as ย we know from the Princeโs Tale, he tells Snape that heโs mistaken about ย Jamesโ son, that he only sees what he wants to see. Obviously he doesnโt want ย him to hate Harry or to mistake him so much. On the other hand he tells that ย same boy something thatโs soโฆ Iโm sure thereโs a proper name to it โ so ย biased and so open to wrong interpretations, so stamped with the purpose of ย glorifying Harryโs father on the expanse of Harryโs personal protector, that ย he wonโt see any reason to make an effort to be less mutinous against his ย teacher.
And yet, ย after this entire book, the only confirmed thing that Snape has objectively ย done wrong, was nagging and ridiculing Harry in his first class. To put some ย context, McGonagallโs punishment had 2 times worse consequences against Harry ย than what Snape ever did, and she put him in danger with someone she had ย acknowledged irresponsible, unable to protect someone well โ but she doesnโt ย get any more hate from Harry because he feels like he deserved the punishment ย and is genuinely hurt. Other than that, Snapeโs actions were mostly justified ย or in the norms โ but instead of having Harry wonder how far he went to ย antagonize Snape this last year and how wrong he was in doing so, heโs given ย another reason not to do that: Snape hates him unfairly so thereโs no need to ย think things through, no need to make peace.
Dumbledore is ย a catalyst, an actor, maybe THE reason, that Harry and Snape will keep hating ย each other along the next books.
And you know ย what? This plan backfires gruesomely when Albus has no choice but to make him ย teach Harry Occlumency.
Dumbledore ย broke Harryโs trust with his professor when it had a chance to spring, and ย then, after Siriusโ death, heโll again somehow make it Snapeโs fault talking ย about โsome wounds run too deepโ.
I get that it ย is meant to make the author doubt about Snapeโs true allegiances for the ย futureโฆ But I think that even if Dumbledore had told Harry the true reason ย Snape hated James and couldnโt seem to let go of the past, it would still ย have allowed Snape to make Voldemort believe Dumbledore fell for his โlyingโ, ย and accentuated hate against Snape when heโd kill Dumbledore, as it would ย have given further clues to the reader to think that maybe Jamesโ treatment ย of Snape, being unforgivable, is a solid reason to think Snape doesnโt ever ย want to work for the Light. It would have acted like a Snapeโs Worst Memory, ย except sooner.
Instead he ย said โSnape couldnโt ever forgive James for having saved his life, he ย couldnโt bear knowing that he had a debt to himโโฆ and only that.
This is ย Dumbledore in one of his cruelest, most manipulative and repulsive choices. I
I think Iโll ย hate this passage from now on.
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Harry tried to understand this but it ย made his head pound, so he stopped. (See what I mean? Harry wonโt try to ย think things through. Well, after what Dumbledore said, you donโt even have ย to bother really.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Snape was shaking Professor McGonagallโs hand, with a horrible forced ย smile. (Yeahโฆ yeah, I would have used something akin to Occlumency if I ย were at your place, to hold up the humiliating โdownfallโ of my own House ย glorified by the rest of the school. Also notice how Harry reserved the ย โProfessorโ title for McGonagall only. All ties are cut.)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย He caught Harryโs eye and Harry knew at once that Snapeโs feelings ย towards him hadnโt changed one jot. This ย didnโt worry Harry. (Why should he, huh? In the midst of this horrible ย anti-Slytherin/pro-Gryffindor show no less?)
ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย (They all got good marks.) ย Even Neville scraped through, his ย good Herbology mark making up for his ย abysmal Potions one. (We didnโt have a single instance where Snape ย bullies Neville here. Only Harryโฆ in the beginning of the year. Not any other ย instance after. Weak bully in HP1. Letโs see if it changes in HP2, in HP4, or ย if one of the worst instances start in HP3, and we know why he would. Letโs ย confirm a hypothesis. The hypothesis that Snape became really bullying mostly ย because of the circumstances, such as his bullies returning at Hogwarts, or ย Voldemort coming back.)
Conclusion
I donโt have any. Iโm tired. Iโll make the posts with themes based on this alright? I hoped this proved insightful.
Hey everyone! I was able to get commentary done quickly this week, so letโs get into it!
Silverheart, Neurok Hideout by @just--a--penguinโ
Art Direction: Neurok scientists study within this secret base, filled with artifacts of Mirran technological stylings, especially those of the Neurok, such as camouflage and vision enhancement.
Oh this is sweeeet. I like how well the stun counter payoff works with the proliferate effects you probably already want in a charge counter deck. And I love how this encourages a charge counter deck. It does it in a very good way, where it works okay on its own but works far better with it. The tappage is very good too, cause it means youโre not encouraged to move *all* your charge counters to this. Maybe it would be better to have the tap be part of the counter moving ability though; even with the limitation of legendary itโs very comboable, and would further discourage the โmove all your charge counters to thisโ gameplay that i donโt think would be particularly fun.
Weaponized Towershell by @horsecrashโ
Durdle Turtle is back baby!!! I think this is a lot cleaner execution of the concept, and an appropriate statline for it. I like this.
Dimensional Convulsion by @spooky-bardโ
Oh this is neat! Cool combination of effects that feels very white-blue. You could probably word this as โCreatures entering the battlefield under an opponentsโ control this way enter tapped with a stun counter on them.โ Which is better for digital and doesnโt leave room for weird tapping shenanigans while the ability is on the stack. I quite like this though!!
Kushala the Enchantress by @ambermetalicscorpionโ
Formattingwise, there should be a comma between hexproof and lifelink and lifelink should be lowercase, and the second ability should be worded โWhenever you cast an enchantment spell, put five stun counters on target creatureโ. Five stun counters is enough to practically be full removal, but done in a way that doesnโt feel particularly green or black, and repeatable removal like this is scary. Taking out a creature whenever you cast an enchantment spell is gonna be devastating; youโre gonna lock players out of the game, which is scary enough, and the hexproof makes it even harder to deal with. I also wish the flavortext said a bit more; not as in more words, but as in, i wish it told me more about who this character is.
Polar Vortex by @bergdgโ
Oh this is cool! Flavorful and simple effect. Itโs a bit worse than ghostly prison, since they can pay 2 *or* not attack with it next turn, but it gives you the destroy tapped creatures ability to make up for it. I do think that ability needs some restrictions though; repeatable removal is always dangerous. Bare minimum, I think it should have an activate only as a sorcery type deal so they can at least guarantee the damage.
Will and Rowan, Heroes by @fractured-infinityโ
Minor formatting stuff first: The โThen discardโ clause should be a separate sentence from the draw two cards clause because of the unless clause, and the damage of the last ability needs to specify a source. Power level wise, unconditional card draw is a strong plus for a 4 mana walker- usually even a single card has a small condition as a plus ability at that mana value, and this is that and pretty often *two* cards.
Aurora Devotee by @stupidstupidratcreaturesโ
This card is very reminiscent of devoted druid, which Iโm guessing is intentional given the name and the flavor. Given that, I think you could word this as โPut a stun counter on ~: Untap ~.โ And I might like to see it as a 0/2 as well, to match more closely. Itโs not always worth matching just for the callback but in this case I think it is, cause the difference isnโt too much and making this less combat viable might actually be good since itโs really good as a mana dork. Compared to devoted druid though, I quite like it. Druid only lets you squeeze one extra mana out of it under normal circumstances, but is more comboable, whereas this is more of a steady value card. This is quite cool.
Stensia Spite-Haunt by @railway-covidae
This is a cool roleplayer, though not sure it has the splash Iโd want out of a mythic; this feels more rare. Colorpiewise itโs a lil odd but probably fine; they did experiment with this kind of effect in red for a little while and while they stopped that, it doesnโt really do anything red shouldnโt. The nonbasic clause is definitely a good call here, as is the double red; definitely shows what kind of environment this card encourages.
Crawl to the Surface by @hiygamerโ
Very cool!! We donโt tend to see much 4 mana reanimation these days but I think this is safe enough. I just wouldnโt put it in current standard with atraxa lol.
Ice-cursed Mage by @halfsilveredmirrorโ
Oh this is *cool*. This is awesome. I like the decisions it has you make and the planning you have to do. This seems like a hard card to use correctly, but fun all around. However, I do think itโs an issue that you can do the tap/untap loop as many times as you want while the stun counter trigger is on the stack though; that doesnโt seem the intention and circumvents the fun parts of this card.
Enlightenment by @little-red-rabbitโ
Wow this is a lot going on. It does all work together well, which is good. The general vibe of this seems to be as a control finisher; tap all your opponents stuff down, probably for a long while, draw some cards, and attack with a big beater you have cause of those cards. Iโd probably cut the bit about โIf a stun counter was removed from ~ this wayโ, to lean into that playstyle and focus the card a bit. Iโd also make it only distribute stun counters on creatures your opponents control, so that if you do your job as a control deck and keep stuff off the board you arenโt punished for that by having to tap down this. I do like how this encourages you to keep creatures on your opponents board, cause if you put a stun counter on three creatures, youโll draw three cards next turn. Seven counters may be a lot though.
Gutter Gripper by @grorntโ
Six spirits is a lot, I might see if that can be toned down a bit. Otherwise though, I really like this. This is a cool card though, and very spirit feeling

I think a 2 mana 5/5 is just a bit too much, even with the downside. I think Iโd like this better as a 3 mana 5/5 with trample. The clock feels a little less immediate that way.

This is a very white way to use stun counters, riffing on the โenters the battlefield tappedโ effect it gets. I donโt think you can say โlose all stun countersโ as part of a static effect like this; youโd have to do it as an ETB trigger. I also think this is just a mana too much; this could probably be 4 mana safely.
Awaken the Giants by @helloijustreadyourpostโ
I wonder if this would be more fun if it presented a choice rather than make it mandatory. I think itโs a bit too risky as is; itโs big, but really slow, and that might put people off from playing it.
Parasite Prime by @wolkemesserโ
Oh this is interesting. Proliferating stun counters is a neat potential synergy and I like how this leans into it. I think it has just the right difficulty of hoop for the trigger. Iโm curious about the death trigger though; stunned creatures arenโt really much of a threat, and theyโre not gonna be getting into combat. It seems odd gameplay to encourage.
Neural Restructure by @real-aspen-hoursโ
I worry that this doesnโt really have a home. I donโt think itโs strong enough for standard, and in formats with a larger card pool, I donโt think it compares favorably to other control magic effects, even more recent ones. The cardโs fine, Iโm not sure it could be costed any less, itโs just unexciting. Maybe three mana for more stun counters would have a bit more excitement factor? Or maybe itโs just me
Regenerative Pugilist by @stareyedesperโ
Art direction: An averagely muscular troll is seen from behind his larger opponent. They are both wearing boxing attire. His body is a mosaic of bruises, lumps, and calluses. Despite this, he is completely focused.
I like this card, but I think it could do better by picking one ability or the other and leaning into it. Personally, I like the trolly flavor where it doesnโt die no matter how hard you hit it, but it might take a while to recover. But you could lean into a pacifist-fighter type angle with the other as well. But the first ability I think wants to be a bit overstated (itโs probably more of a downside than an upside even with the difficulty to kill), and maybe some additional way to untap it (like, three mana). Or the tapping down your opponentsโ stuff is also interesting, but that probably wants a small power and maybe vigilance or something. But I think putting them together kinda makes them fight for space.
Slow by @izzet-always-r-versus-uโ
You misspelled the card name, it should be โslow mercyโ. Easy mistake to make. The card seems fine though, a solid roleplayer. Discourages attacking, and slows your opponent down, but doesnโt stop it outright. Probably safely a rare though, doesnโt have the splash to be mythic imo.

I like how the card draw ability works with both stun counters and the older doesnโt untap effects. Very fun with exert cards which is presumably intentional given the flavor, though itโs not in great colors for it. I wish the enabling effect was more of a cost for a beneficial effect like exert is than using a removal-esque effect and targeting your own creature.
Dune Warden by @curiooftheheartโ
Nice little twist on a banisher priest type card; the stun counter is a nice way to make this a little more effective as removal since even if they kill the dune warden their cardโs still out of commission for a little. Given that, I donโt think the ward is really necessary tbh, but thatโs pretty small nitpick.
