Today is crazy day, taking off to work again but also an anniversary of life. I think back to a time that was a close call not only for me but a few of my teammates. Luckily, we all made it out alive but we were all changed after that night. When I left the service I needed to figure out that spark, why I get up every morning. I found that through being a part of something in the community. These guys, Paul and Hal among many others are simply awesome. They are veterans in the Denver community I relate to and came out to support my event. In the end, you need to build the life you want to have and not wait for it to simply fall in your lap. I see brothers leaving the service and kind of falling down the same path and mistakes I made. I feel it is up to us to take care of our own and plan to build a group of people that believe in that as well. All of this came about from the middle of an iraqi humid morning. This weekend was a weekend to reflect on in many ways. Ultimately it is a weekend of reflection of how my past, present, and future collide. I have built the life I wanted because there was not one out there that resonated with me. How the hell could I go to a 9 to 5 life when i haven’t had one of those since 18? Since I was a kid and coming from a mixed background culturally I have had to morph every time my family moved back and forth between the US to Europe. This however has become an enormous advantage in building the life I want for myself in the future. A future where I can help people get out of their shell, include others that don’t think like me to be better. In the end it’s about providing potential experiences for people to bond and create depth, empathy, and understanding. In this day and age of the daily grind I think we must push ourselves to ensure these moments are attainable. That we not forget what ultimately binds us as society are our core values. This is why I started a nonprofit now 6 years ago, to help people get involved in philanthropy earlier in life, to have that meaning, to put things in perspective. Life is not as bad as you think it is when you open your eyes and see how fortunate you are to be alive in this particular time in the world. As I am analyzing the reaction around the world about the recent german elections i can't help but wonder how things got this way. Even my grandma weighed in and basically anyone that is not with CDU party of Merkel then they are Communist. Did it go as planned, no. Is it a step on the wrong direction, sure. Yet in the end I think it will pass and the political climate will correct itself, not just in Germany but all over the world. I think the trip I recently led was just evidence of people wanting to have an alternative to what's available. I think a lot of times people want all the benefits of relationships, or community without actually giving anything to benefit others first. You have to change that and actually put yourself out there, help someone else to create that common bond. I urge everyone to get out there and vote because it's responsible and what citizens should do. That is simply the first step though, get out there and actually be active in your community whether political or otherwise. I learned this the hard way by running away from own responsibilities of being a part of my family for over a decade. Sometimes people forget that friendships like anything take time to cultivate. Obviously you can have a bond with someone pretty easily but the start to notice the differences. Usually if the differences are minor you continue to grow as people by interacting with each other. These two guys are those kind of friends, Yoel and Alon. We don't have to talk everyday or see each other all the time but when we do it's awesome. You see these guys do something pretty remarkable. They help spread the values of the people before us that had true character. They tell the story of ordinary men doing remarkable things in crazy circumstances. Like those men and women before us, they are humble about their accomplishments and what their value is to an organization like Jewish National Fund is. This is also why we are friends, ordinary people pushing values we hold dear like dedication, empathy, and humility.
