A great television show can be enhanced by an incredible titling sequence, and Feud, which airs Sundays on FX, is a perfect example. Referencing 1960s Saul Bass illustrations, the opener of Feud explains the core plot of the film Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, starring Hollywood icons Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Symbols of rivalry, jealousy, and sorrow animate across the screen, replicating the suspense and horror of the film. But a deeper look reveals the opener is more about the tempestuous relationship between the two lead actresses off-screen, amplified by a sexist industry eager to keep them adversaries. In the sequence, you see the tension and you can feel the pain. Pain is what truly drives the show. The pain of aging, the pain of stardom, and the pain of being a woman in an industry where men call all the shots. The titling sequence for Feud captures all of this emotion and symbolism so simply and beautifully. Saul would be proud.
