thinking about their welfare (or lack of it). I understand that feeder rodents exist for different purposes than pet rodents, and I don’t at all begrudge a carnivore its right to eat (I mean, I eat meat too), but many of the feeder-rodent-breeder operations I’ve encountered have been such low standards of care for living animals that I wonder how I would be able to personally fund them in order to feed my (theoretical) pets. BUT, I also have dogs, and can’t say that the food I feed them is ethically sourced either. Not even all of the food I eat is; I just can’t afford that yet. How do you deal with/think about these issues? Is it reasonable to sacrifice the well being of the feeder animals in order to properly care for our pets? I’d love to hear any insight or thoughts you have.DANG that’s a good and complicated question! I’m gonna answer it in parts. I meant to write this up AGES ago, but life got in the way. Also, r.odent and m.ice are punctuated so that they don’t show up in a tumblr search for those critters.First- this is the easiest part to answer- I never, ever feed live. I did once when I was younger, working for a rescue, and it was the most emotionally devastating thing I think I’ve ever been through. It was completely unnecessary. Some snakes refuse to take f/t prey, but mine are not those snakes. Would I feed live if I had to? Yes, but I’d exhaust every alternative first. Now, where do these feeders come from? I’ve done the Arctic M.ice thing a few times and I don’t like it, no siree. It’s not just that they’re ridiculously overpriced, but also that I know nothing about where they come from, what shape they’re in, and how they were treated during life. This is important to me for a lot of reasons. It typically ensures that the feeders are going to be high quality, which means healthier for my snakes and lizard. I have a lot of respect for the animals I use as feeders. All of my whole-prey feeders come from American R.odent Supply, which is a company based in Indianapolis. All of the feeders have been in great condition- never any feces or urine stains, no weird tumors or skin conditions- and more importantly, I’ve talked to the employees at reptile shows. I’ve always gotten a really nice vibe from them. They’re polite, respectful, and they don’t make jokes about the animals or call living rodents “snake food.” People who post about them on forums have very positive things to say about the feeder quality, and in my conversations with them, I know how committed they are to the health of their feeders. I feel ok buying from them- I know the feeders had a quick death and were treated well. ARS is a huge business, yes, but they built their success on their ability to provide healthy prey animals. The other feeder I use is Reptilinks, and I’ve talked to the owners many times. They’re intensely committed to using the highest quality prey possible and source everything as ethically as possible. Their venison is wild, their r.abbit and poultry is free-range and local to their production facility, and the owners are very transparent about where everything comes from. I bought Reptilinks the first time because I was curious if my tegu would like them. I keep buying them because not only does she like them, but I can feel really good about feeding them to her for many different reasons.

But as you say -- they were probably in ill-fitting bras of their own.  And similarly, why was it that I had to wait for the internet to tell me what real sex and real relationships are like?

yeah that’s true! i guess i was just annoyed that he said the exact same thing to me in the message as he did in his comment? and last time someone messaged me after i posted on something like that they tried to act like i wanted to have an irrelevant ‘let’s catch up’ conversation while talking about how ‘free’ they felt now that they were tied down to a girl. IDK the whole thing also made me v irritable
