Drabble #26
āSo ya was in Arkham, huh?ā J asked the interviewee, leaning back in his seat and scrutinizing them closely. He didnāt look crazy - but then again,Ā WHO THE FUCK DID?Ā - and he certainly wasnāt in Arkham during the last stay J could remember.
He was average height, average build, with light brown hair, atypical American-Boy-Next-Door blue eyes, and sharp features. Maybe if he was taller he could be the face of the āYou Donāt Know Whoās Crazy Just By One Lookā societal mandate. As it was though, he just looked⦠plain. Boring. Cute in a shy way, but not that cute that J would turn this interview in to a seduction. He was far too young anyway for Jās tastes, a mereĀ BABYĀ at 30 years old in Jās eyes.
āFive years anā three months,ā came the exact reply.Ā āI was put in for killinā the baby-sitter.ā No shame. Good.Ā āI did the rest at Blackgate. They thought I was ready. Guess I was⦠or maybe I wasnāt⦠I dunno. Iām here though, right, thatās not sayinā anythinā good!ā he laughed. Crooked teeth and a large smile. A twinkle in the eyes. There J saw a flash ofĀ CRAZYĀ which satisfied him.
āThe baby-sitter?ā J asked, finding thatĀ LAME.Ā āWhatād they do, smother yer kid?ā
A shake of the head, a serious expression.Ā āThey⦠well,Ā SHE⦠sheād also clean for us. Just some sprucinā up. Laundry. She⦠she, uhmā¦ā
āCāmon, Iām a busy man,ā J urged with a sigh, finding the hesitation a bad mark against this guy.
He closed his eyes and spat it out, handsĀ GRIPPINGĀ the armrests.Ā āShe found my stash of porn.ā His eyes fluttered open.Ā āGAYĀ porn. She threatened to tell my⦠my wife⦠if I didnāt pay her college loan off.ā
āThey put ya in Arkham for that?ā J asked in a monotone. It was hardly insanity.
āNo,ā he shook his head resolutely.Ā āThey put me there for killinā herĀ ANāĀ my wife. See, my wife⦠Brooke⦠Brooke walked in. IĀ KNOWĀ it was stupid of me to do it with herĀ THEREĀ but⦠I didnāt think. So I had to kill her, you know how it is⦠sheād never love me after that. Iād rather a funeral than a divorce. I sāpose what didnāt help my case was that I didnāt report it⦠anā I insisted on keepinā them there. I mean⦠I swore they were alive, I⦠IĀ HEARDĀ them. Laughinā at me, talkinā about the stains on the carpet⦠I couldnātĀ BURYĀ them alive, could I?ā
āSo Iām guessinā Arkham pegged ya for Schizophrenic.ā
āAmong otherĀ HURTFULĀ things. Iāve always heard voices⦠what harm is it? Tell me, Mister Joker, what harm is it when a man hears voices? Iām never lonely this way⦠they never⦠they always have my back. So what harm?ā he asked angrily, hands now wringing.Ā āItās that quote from Marlon Brando⦠I forget the movieā¦Ā ānever lonely and sometimes I envy themā.ā
āYer askinā the wrong guy,ā J shrugged, finding the argument valid.
āI mightnāt have loved Brooke as a man should⦠but I loved her in other ways. Her anā lilā Suzie.ā He stopped, sighing.Ā āThey told me my mother has her now⦠she wonāt let me see her.Ā MY OWN CHILD.The Courts are backinā herĀ OF COURSE.ā
āSo why not live a wholesome life tryinā tāget yer baby back? Why come tāme?ā J asked swiftly, feelingĀ NOTHINGĀ for the manās anguish. It was a consequence many faced and it certainly wasnāt Jās problem.
He smiled gently, leaning forward.Ā āMister Joker, Iām takinā a leaf outta your book. Iāve⦠itās embarrassinā, but I always admired you. Your⦠philosophy. The things you say. So Iām a new man! No more hidinā or secrets⦠I canāt go back to my old life, so⦠Iām makinā a new one!ā
J looked over the files he had Frost steal and blackmail for. This guy was seriously disturbed by all accounts. Clean though. Before the baby-sitter incident, he was a lawful citizen, wealthy, and well-liked. He had once seen a therapist for the voices, but that had promptly ended when heĀ REFUSEDĀ to medicateĀ āhis friendsā away. So he had a minor record of insanity. He also admired Jās philosophy.
āYa know how to work a gun? Sure, yaāve killed anā been a bad guy, buā would ya be prepared tākill on command? Take orders? Enter a life oā crime, rather than jusā dip yer feet?ā
He leaned forward even more, a manic look coming over him.Ā āMister Joker⦠the only sadness I have about killinā that bitch baby-sitter anā Brooke is that I got caught. That I⦠I hadnāt a real chance to do it again. Iāve always wanted to kill, you see⦠but until that day⦠I didnāt think Iād enjoy it as much as I did. I can learn about guns. I can kill on command like a good doggy. I been takinā orders ever since I got a job. Workinā for you? The one difference is that IādĀ LOVEĀ workinā for you.ā
J sighed, thinking. No criminal record, just a crazy one. No experience with guns. No connections. No know-how about how the business works. But⦠he was clearly on board to learn. He followed Jās philosophy. He was determined. Hell, didnātĀ J HIMSELFĀ start out knowing fuck-all? āIāll give ya a trial-period of⦠letās say three months. After that, weāll make a final decision on yer place. Iām givinā ya a chance to show me⦠prove yerself tāme.ā
His face lit up.Ā āOh, gosh! Oh⦠I⦠thank you, thank you so much! I promise, youĀ WONāTĀ regret this.ā
āYeah, yeah, look: get yerself a mask. Abandon yer outpatient programme anā whatever hole they got ya livinā at. Go shoot yer probation officer or whatever ya got. Then weāll talk ground rules, aāight, Farris?ā
āPlease, Iā¦ā He stopped, rummaging around in the gym bag at his feet, producingĀ A PLAIN WHITE MASKĀ whose only disruption was the wordsĀ āFUCKā on the forehead andĀ āFACEā on the chin.Ā āI took the liberty!ā he gushed.
J frowned at it.Ā āPlain⦠so itād suit ya. Buā whatās with the scribbles?ā
āItās what Melissa called me. The baby-sitter. She called me that before I stabbed her in the dirty fat mouth. Whenever I wear it, I think of her,ā he sighed fondly,Ā STROKINGĀ the mask now as though it were a loverās face.
āFuck-Face it is then. I like it better anyhow. Easier tāremember,ā J nodded with a grin, finding this man growing on him already.
āYes, thatās exactly what I think. Itās unassuminā⦠unique⦠itās⦠well, itāsĀ ME, isnāt it?ā
āOh no⦠itās theĀ YOUĀ yer gunna learn tābe. Anā yer gunna own that name. Itāll go down in history.ā
Fuck-face nodded, rising and shaking Jās hand happily.Ā āYes, Boss, it surely will!ā
