Practice - Name
My name is Mortimer. I also go by Mars, but that is just my middle name.
My name is Mortimer.
My name will be legally changed to Mortimer Mars before I turn 21.
I will change my name to Mortimer Mars before I am 21 years old.
Hi, mama. I know that you and I don't agree on this particular subject, but I want you to know that it is my life. It is my decision to choose my happiness over your peace of mind. I am not here to serve you. I am not here to be a doll for your shaping. I am the one who molds my own clay. I am the one who sews and stitches the buttons wherever I see fit. I am me. I am your son.
I am going to change my name to Mortimer Mars before I turn 21. This is a fact. It is a truthful statement that cannot be disproven. It is a plan, a schedule, and a birthright. I am going to be the man I was born to be, and for now, this is how I will accomplish that.
I am changing my name because the one you gave me does not fit. I am not changing it because I despise you. I'm not changing it to make you hate me, or to show you that I hate you, because I don't. I see you as my mother, my caregiver, the one who has taken me through the roughest of times and has shown me what strength is.
I want to be strong, too.
I want to be myself.
And to do that, I need to change my name.
I am going to change my name, and if you don't respect that decision, then that is on you. I'm not here to fit myself into a box you placed me in when I was born. I have since climbed out of that box, realized that I have both outgrown it and that it wasn't for me to begin with, and have found a new one. This one feels like home. It feels like strength. It feels like happiness.
The old name is not me. The old name speaks of an unknown person. That person had no clue where they were going in life. They had no clue that they could make decisions for themselves. They had no idea they could choose to be happy. They had no idea who they were.
My name is Mortimer Mars. Soon, that statement will be a legal truth. I am 20 years old, and I am going to change my name, and I am going to choose myself over your peace of mind.
