ms. forsythe sat bryce and elodie down on their last day of kindergarten. she looked back and forth between the two of them and smiled. “now, i need you both to promise me that you’ll always be friends and always look out for one another.” without even a second thought elodie wrapped her arms around the little boy and giggled.

“i promise.”

she remembered the very first day of kindergarten. elodie was understandably a little nervous to see her parents go but her nerves were soon calmed once she spoke to some of her classmates. but soon she heard yelling and crying from near the door. a dark haired boy was upset because his father had left (that little boy being bryce archer). she didn’t quite know what to do about that but something inside of her told her that she needed to help him. a little voice in her head told her to go over and sit with him, so that’s what she did. she waited and waited in silence as he cried. she wouldn’t be going anywhere. 

never in a million years would she had pictured this situation. she had gotten the call about bryce’s accident and everything in her began to twist and turn. she didn’t know what had happened, all she knew was that there had been an accident and she was in the hospital. she had to pause for a moment in the door because she was so caught of guard by the way he looked. she swallowed hard and rushed to his side. 

“i’m here. i’m here. everything’s going to be okay, i’m here.”

elodie knew he couldn’t hear that. she knew he was on so many medications that he probably didn’t know what year it was. but she was here and had to make sure he knew that. she sat on the edge of his hospital bed and got as close to him as she could. her hand cautiously wrapped around his, minding all of the wires he was connected to. elodie blinked furiously trying to hold back the tears forming in her eyes. she absolutely would not leave his side. she’d come to the hospital every single day until he was better. 

and here they were again. sitting in the back of ezra’s car. bryce’s head rested in her lap and her hand mindlessly ran through his hair. her other arm was wrapped around his torso with her hand intertwined with his. the two of them were absolutely silent, neither of them quite knowing what to say. 

he had asked her to come to a doctor’s appointment about his hearing, and while elodie was terrified about what she may learn she wanted to be there with him. she needed to be there by his side, just like she had ALWAYS been. she stayed silent the entire appointment but never let her hand leave his. she would occasionally use the trick ezra had taught her and press her thumb right in the middle of his palm. elodie had been fighting off tears the entire appointment but did her best to keep a strong face on. 

but once they reached the car she couldn’t hide what she was feeling anymore. elodie leaned down so that her lips were within a few inches of his ear.
