She was crying.

While I thought Mashima was going to do the typical move by sending Juvia and Lucy, he sent Erza. And this is actually for the better, because what would happen if Juvia and Lucy stopped them? They would, more likely than not, stop fighting, but for what reason? Like, if they really stopped because they find out their gfs were never dead, then what does that say about them and the reason they were fighting in the first place? It doesn’t take something good to happen to knock you back to your senses. It takes something–someone who is neutral to both parties, to stop you and scold you and show you that what you’re doing is wrong. Natsu and Gray need to learn that, regardless of whether the ones they love are gone, they should not be letting their anger control them and fighting (even though I am aware this is not the only reason). Do you think they would learn that if they got what they wanted? If Lucy and Juvia did in fact come back to them now? That’s why it takes someone like Erza, who has always stopped, supported and protected them, to do this; to show them that what they’re doing not only brings pain to her but would pain to Makarov and everyone else as well. It’s even better because they’re seeing her crying…and she’s hardly ever cried. That's why Natsu looks so terrified and Gray is sane again. Because she, their strong sisterly figure, is crying.

Also, it only makes sense that she would be the one able to withstand their attacks. After all, in Team Natsu, only she rivals (and outranks) them in terms of power.

”Stand up for us one more time, First. There are still enemies who require our attention, and we cannot win without your strategies. Now… come on. Not just for us, but for the old geezer’s sake too.”

This page shatters my heart into a million pieces. Erza is already utterly devastated with master makorav's sacrifice, and now she has to see Natsu and Gray (whom she considers as brothers) fight each other to the death. I just want to give Erza the world's biggest hug and heal her hands.
