Hi! I was just wondering, how do you know that Elsa from Frozen is a lesbian? I'm not saying she isn't, I'm just wondering.
it was most likely unintentional, but her story greatly mirrors homophobia, and being closeted (especially with parents who know but don’t want anyone else to. the whole teaching Elsa to “conceal don’t feel” reminded me a lot of Portia DeRossi’s story with how her mother said she “didn’t care” but didn’t want her telling anyone else) and being persecuted for being who she is by society. plus coming to terms with loving and accepting herself for who she is. (plus at no point does she show attraction to or interest in men. the only person she cares about is her sister, another women, who she’s scared to show any affection to because she’s afraid she’s going to hurt her, because what makes her different makes her bad)
this is why she’s tagged as coded, because though she’s not coded in the same way Pearl is, her story mirrors homophobia (just like the Beast’s story is meant to mirror having AIDS) which counts as coded to me
and though this could be said for various things, like I know a lot of people view it as being reminicent of mental illness (or at least showing accurate representations of mental illness in her reactions to what’s happened to her), apparently homophobic parents found the “I love you” from Anna (her sister…) as being too intense to be sisterly and saw it as being gay, too gay for their kids, and there were lots of stories from other movie-goers of crying children being dragged from the theater by a furious parent who went on to complain about Disney’s gay agenda on facebook (that were screenshot’ed and passed around the rest of the internet for us to laugh at.
so if it’s enough to piss off the str8s, it’s enough for us =P
