THE REST OF Hawkins isn’t as forgiving about rogue children that double as psychic monster slayers as One and his small group of friends are. It’s for this reason that Eleven is on the bus with him, sat snug beside him as they travel from one side of the sleepy town to the other, dodging fares and requests for tickets whenever possible.
He supposes that it’s a little selfish of him to bring her along on a mission that only really concerns him, but it’s also for her safety. If there’s anything he won’t allow ever again, it’s letting Doctor Brenner sink his claws into her again.
It still hasn’t quite sunk in yet ---- that he’s found one of his siblings.
❝ This is hardly ideal, ❞ One says as they step off of the bus together, eyes affixed on the motel in front of them. Its exterior is hardly inspiring, thick, unruly ivy growing up the side of the building, once white bricks now a dismal grey, but it’s a roof over their head. A cheap one. ❝ But we’ll be okay here. For tonight. ❞
And so long as they keep moving, they should remain so. It’s part of why One is hopping from room to room so often, even though this excursion should only be a couple of weeks long at most: he just can’t risk an ever-nosy Papa catching a whiff of their location.
He looks down at her, catches her wary eye. ❝ Hey. It’s going to be okay. I won’t let anything happen to you, okay? ❞
