More train window sociology. Flattened earth, imported nutrients, acres of single plants, water delivered from far away, more straight predictable lines, and an army of precariously employed laborers. Makes me wonder what is rational about this system at all? I suppose industrial agriculture produces a lot of food to sustain growing populations, might be one argument. How much is actually consumed locally and what is the ecological footprint of the distribution system that takes the product off the farm? Who gains from this? Which do you prefer, the orderly lines of modernity or the haphazard natural landscape? #environmentalsociology #fromatrainwindow (at Camarillo, California)
