I have the letters my grandfather sent my grandmother when he went away to join the navy during world war 2. An excerpt:

December 7, 1942: "By the way, as you no doubt know today was Pearl Harbor Day. Do you remember Dec 7, 1941 though? I do. As plainly as if it was yesterday. It was Sunday night and we had been out riding. As we drove through Brockton I heard the newsboys shouting about Japan attacking us. We little realized how much that one little headline was going to affect our lives. I am still of the belief that his may soon be over and then we can unpack those dishes and read about the war that was. I wonder where we’ll live or what we’ll do after the war. As long as we are together it doesn’t seem to make much difference. Do you ever think of our house on Sargent St? I have thought about it a lot lately for some some reason. We really lived an awful lot for the short time we were there. It was really one long glorious honeymoon. Then my furlough was a second honeymoon, and after I put a stop to this shindig we’ll start our third and last honeymoon. Last because it will last the rest of our lives.”

#they were married for 60 years #and separated only by death #on their very first date #they got into a car accident and my great grandpa had to pick them up #from JAIL #on their actual honeymoon #they showed up to the place they were supposed to stay #and it was closed #had to stay the night with their taxi driver
