Heya yâall so- Being passionate about psychology, i know a ton of stuff and for that reason, Junko is one of my favorite character. No, not because sheâs âcrazy and wants the world to burn for no reason other than despair and irredemableâ but because i like to look much more further than that as to Why Exactly she is like that. The source of everything. In this analysis, we'll be talking about different disorders that could lead junko to do actions such as ruin her relationships, crave constant disappointment and think of herself above everyone else
Lets get started under the cut
Okay so small opinion on Junkoâs character and her point of view.
Junko tbh is just bored of herself, and thats just canon. Its even written on her wiki and stuff, Its why she keeps changing moods violently almost as if different personalities are fronting, its cuz she gets bored way too easily, of everything even of herself. I feel like a junko POV would be somehow very depressing, people often write her Manic and Sadistc but truth is i feel she'd just be bored and self conscious. She knows what she's doing and she's bored with it. Her POV shouldnât only consist of her being like âPUPUPU IM CRAZY AND WANT TO SET THE WORLD ON FIRE FOR NO REASON LOOK AT ME HAHAH DESPAIR!!!â. Like Sure yeah, she does have manic moments, that much is obvious. But she isnât 100% of the time in a manic episode lmao. Sheâs someone who just, wants her life to get back a meaning. Whatâs the meaning of her life if nothing is a surprise to her? If thereâs no thrill? Thereâs nothing to keep her here. She knows everything, she can predict everything from how intelligent she is, she thinks only despair is unpredictable yet even then despair lets her down. Like when she was brainwashed and did not have her Analytic talent, she wasnât obsessed with despair, she wasnât bad. This proves that her entire obsession comes from a place of extreme boredom and unhappiness.
Okay, time to move on to the whole psychology and disorders part of things!
From what iâve seen of this character and from the hours i spent thinking of the reasoning she has for her every actions and thought process, iâve conluded that she very possibly suffers from 3 disorders. 3 personality disorders. Which already you can tell, can and will fuck someone up.
Alright so, what i think is she suffers from: NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), Self Defeating Personality Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder.
Here is informations on said disorders followed by explanation of why it fits:
NPD:Â
-Narcissistic personality disorder is a personality disorder with a long-term pattern of abnormal behavior characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance, excessive need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. Those affected often spend much time thinking about achieving power or success, or on their appearance. They often take advantage of the people around them. The behavior typically begins by early adulthood, and occurs across a variety of social situations.
(As you can read, this fits perfectly Junko, she has little to no problem using people, thinking of herself as the ultimate despair and deserving of it all, she will use people, throw them away, mock them and laugh when they ask for her sympathy. She has no empathy whatsoever and is disgusted thinking that she should feel bad for others, yet expect everyone around her to treat her like royalty.)
-Grandiosity with expectations of superior treatment from other people
Fixation on fantasies of power, success, intelligence, attractiveness, etc.
Self-perception of being unique, superior, and associated with high-status people and institutions
Need for continual admiration from others
Sense of entitlement to special treatment and to obedience from others
Exploitation of others to achieve personal gain
Unwillingness to empathize with the feelings, wishes, and needs of other people
Intense envy of others, and the belief that others are equally envious of them
Pompous and arrogant demeanor
(These are different symptoms, The DSM-5 indicates that persons with NPD usually display some or all of the following symptoms, typically without the commensurate qualities or accomplishments, doesnât these symptoms all fit Junko perfectly?)
Self Defeating Personality Disorder is:
A pervasive pattern of self-defeating behavior, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts. The person may often avoid or undermine pleasurable experiences, be drawn to situations or relationships in which they will suffer, and prevent others from helping them, as indicated by at least five of the following:
1)chooses people and situations that lead to disappointment, failure, or mistreatment even when better options are clearly available
2)rejects or renders ineffective the attempts of others to help them
3)following positive personal events (e.g., new achievement), responds with depression, guilt, or a behavior that produces pain (e.g., an accident)
4)incites angry or rejecting responses from others and then feels hurt, defeated, or humiliated (e.g., makes fun of spouse in public, provoking an angry retort, then feels devastated)
5)rejects opportunities for pleasure, or is reluctant to acknowledge enjoying themselves (despite having adequate social skills and the capacity for pleasure)
6)fails to accomplish tasks crucial to their personal objectives despite having demonstrated ability to do so (e.g., helps fellow students write papers, but is unable to write their own)
7)is uninterested in or rejects people who consistently treat them well
8)engages in excessive self-sacrifice that is unsolicited by the intended recipients of the sacrifice
(As we all know, Junkoâs quest for her own despair has lead to her own downfall, not only that, be she has salvaged her relationship with Yasuke Matsuda purposely on multiple occasions, first destroying his sandcastle and even killing him. Now i quote this from her wiki â However, he ends up getting killed by Junko in a fit of despair, as he is one of the few people she cares about the most. He was stabbed in the side by Junko and afterwards, she kicked his body until it was a bloody unrecognizable mess. He died believing that Junko did not care about him at all, but in truth this was not the case. Junko did not view him as a mere servant or even an ally and truly did love him as he did her as killing him resulted in her sadness and grief for his death and let him die in despair for the sake of increasing her own despair, proving this with the words â... you were the most important person to me of all...â after his death. â As you can see, Junko craves despair for herself, wanting to go as far as killing people she loves or cares about her. The same she did to her sister. Junko also planned the entire killing game with the chance of letting them win, she wanted a chance to be defeated. She wanted to be on the brink of victory and have that be shattered.)
There is 4 different subtypes of âmasochistsâ (What self defeating personality disorder inflicted people can be refered to, not in the sexual way obviously.)
Virtuous masochist:Â
Including
histrionic
features | Proudly unselfish, self-denying, and self-sacrificial; self-ascetic; weighty burdens are judged noble, righteous, and saintly; others must recognize loyalty and faithfulness; gratitude and appreciation expected for altruism and forbearance.
Possessive masochist:Â
Including
negativistic
features | Bewitches and ensnares by becoming jealous, overprotective, and indispensable; entraps, takes control, conquers, enslaves, and dominates others by being sacrificial to a fault; control by obligatory dependence.
Self-undoing masochist:Â
Including
avoidant
features | Is "wrecked by success"; experiences "victory through defeat"; gratified by personal misfortunes, failures, humiliations, and ordeals; eschews best interests; chooses to be victimized, ruined, disgraced.
Oppressed masochist:Â
Including
depressive
features | Experiences genuine misery, despair, hardship, anguish, torment, illness; grievances used to create guilt in others; resentments vented by exempting from responsibilities and burdening "oppressors".
(As you can see, Self-undoing masochist seems to be an exact description of Junko, doesnât it?)
Now! Enough with Self defeating disorder, lets get to BPD
Now add bpd and it gives unstable swinging between extreme self destructive behaviors/thinking youre better than everyone and deserving of it all, a true, unstoppable force of reckless impulsive decisions.
Here is some informations about BPD:
Borderline personality disorder is characterized by the following signs and symptoms:
Markedly disturbed sense of identity
Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment and extreme reactions
Splitting ("black-and-white" thinking)
Impulsivity and impulsive or dangerous behaviors (e.g., spending, sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, binge eating).
Intense or uncontrollable emotional reactions that often seem disproportionate to the event or situation
Unstable and chaotic interpersonal relationships
Self-damaging behavior
Distorted self-image
Dissociation
Frequently accompanied by depression, anxiety, anger, substance abuse, or rage
The most distinguishing symptoms of BPD are marked sensitivity to rejection or criticism, and intense fear of possible abandonment. Overall, the features of BPD include unusually intense sensitivity in relationships with others, difficulty regulating emotions, and impulsivity. Fear of abandonment may lead to overlapping dating relationships as a new relationship is developed to protect against abandonment in the existing relationship. Other symptoms may include feeling unsure of one's personal identity, morals, and values; having paranoid thoughts when feeling stressed; depersonalization; and, in moderate to severe cases, stress-induced breaks with reality or psychotic episodes.
People with BPD may feel emotions with greater ease, depth and for a longer time than others do. A core characteristic of BPD is affective instability, which generally manifests as unusually intense emotional responses to environmental triggers, with a slower return to a baseline emotional state. People with BPD often engage in idealization and devaluation of others, alternating between high positive regard for people and great disappointment in them. In addition to intense emotions, people with BPD experience emotional "lability" (changeability, or fluctuation). Although that term suggests rapid changes between depression and elation, the mood swings in people with this condition more frequently involve anxiety, with mood fluctuating between anger and anxiety and between depression and anxiety.
People with BPD tend to have trouble seeing a clear picture of their identity. In particular, they tend to have difficulty knowing what they value, believe, prefer, and enjoy. (I quote, again "He became dependent on her and ready to do anything for her, because she told him she'll be what's important to him for now and prevented him from being all alone when he needed it the most. Junko also had a tendency to call them "lovers" and had romantic feelings for Yasuke, but he denied this with annoyance and called her a "stalker", treating her very similarly like he does RyĹko later in life."Â People with BPD have tendencies to try and manipulate someone they love into being entirely dependant on them to receive validation and be reassured they wont be left, and like mentioned above, people with BPD can quickly get very intense feelings in relationships that have just started. Junko going to incredible length and constantly refering them as lovers even if Yasuke is not exactly on the same page can be an example of Junko not knowing exactly how relationship works, and what the different steps are.
Not only that but Bpd causes her to go through the Manic/Depressive moodswings incredibly fast, to split on people, going from loving them so much to wanting nothing of them, to be reckless and impulsive. Which, in return, affects just how she's going to go with her approach;
Manic? Everyone Shall Bow To Her And Be Grateful she even Considers making them part of her little despair game
Depressive? Nothing has a meaning anyways, the only answer is despair, why shouldnt everyone experience it? If she has to go through it, if she has to feel her life is meaningless, why would anyone else get meaning to theirs?)
Now, what does these 3 disorders mixed together do?:
bpd gives unstable swinging between extreme self destructive behaviors/thinking youre better than everyone and deserving of it all
Twist it a bit and make it that despair is what you want and that it is what you deserve, obviously, with npd, youll feel youre the most deserving of despair but, youll try to spread it because youre the king/queen. Youre rewarding all the lowly with the despair you deserve
Basically her own self defeating personality twisted up despair into an ultimate need and goal that with her ego and narssicistic personality she thinks she deserves to a point where she'll spread it to others and expect them to be grateful in return.
In conclusion, Junko is a very complex character whoâs own near supernatural talent has ruined her life, giving her depression and disinterest in living at such a young age that she has done things that have impacted her and most likely unconsciously traumatized her, leading to the development of defense mechanism that developed into complex disorders that now only make her life worse, but gives her a purpose of some sort.
Thank you for reading, and i hope i managed to make you see a side to junko you have never thought of before.
