── ❝ The night before they fled, she had spun around, bowing in her trousers, and exclaimed: “The wizard has given his orders! You shall call me… Mister Frodo!” […]
Now, as she lay on his lap, it was difficult to tell who she was – Mr. Frodo or Miss – and he doubted that even she knew.
But perhaps he needed no answer. Her face lay untroubled, skin translucent, veins of blue running river-like underneath. New wrinkles had formed at the sides of her lips, but she looked neither young nor old, and like neither lad nor lass, but beautiful in a way that defied such divisions.

“Someone else… better for me? But Mr. Frodo… There isn’t anyone better…"
He squeezed her hands and pulled away, trailing his fingers over hers.
“No, there are many who are better, I think,” he said, looking down at his nails – short, and bitten down to the quick. “Somebody healthy, for one. Someone you can live a long, full life with. "No army, no Dark Lord, could ever make me regret you. But Marigold, please understand” – and here [Frodo] paused, and quickly kissed her hand, as if fearful that he might lose it again – “Please understand, now that we are wed, you are mine to protect, and I cannot do that, not if you come along on this quest, and not as long as the Ring and its Master are alive in Middle-earth.”

EXCERPT :
Though a father of a family and once married for many years, Sam felt like a tweenage lad once more, and his heart pattered at the sight, feel, and smell of Frodo… In fact, Frodo smelled particularly lovely: of seed-cake made a thousand different ways, and cloves from Bilbo’s tea, and soap and lavender and earth that he worked himself. And whenever Frodo emerged from the tub room now, Sam felt like he could die right where he stood, watching Frodo dry his dark, curly hair – and even when Frodo was not doing much at all, and simply staring at the sky, it felt like he was holding the whole world together.
But all the same, Sam did nothing but tarry and tarry. He could not put into words exactly why, until one day, Nisilë paid them a visit.

EXCERPT :
And so they danced. They danced across the floor in curling, winding patterns, moving at times slowly and assiduously, and at other times with too much haste. But either way, they kept on, with Frodo’s smiles and whispers her twin beacons of encouragement, and Pippin’s bow-arm growing exhausted, but drawing relentlessly across the strings.

A/N: Readers might notice that I kept Lobelia Sackville-Baggins alive for longer than in canon. There is a reason for this that I hope you'll enjoy!
EXCERPT :
But Mr. Proudfoot was already fastening the vivid lilac cuttings with an overhand bow, his knobbled fingers moving with an efficiency that left no room for protestation. Before she knew it, his hands were upon hers, and the tight little bouquet was firmly in her grasp.
Six bewitching sprigs of lilac, and a central bloom of baby’s breath…
“Confirmed old bachelor, my thick and hairy foot,” Mr. Proudfoot grumbled, casting a significant look at Frodo, and then returning his gaze to Marigold, as if she was his very own daughter, about to be wed. “Enjoy them, lass,” he admonished, and clasped her hand once more, looking misty-eyed in the sunlight. “Enjoy them,” he repeated, “And goodness forbid, don’t let that daft hobbit go on any more adventures!”

A/N: Things do get intimate in one of the scenes - and yes, it is still plot-relevant! As always, the more sensitive parts are marked by asterisks *** at the beginning and at the end, and there are summaries in footnotes so you can skip those parts and still know what happened.
She knew his pain all too well now that she had seen it through his eyes, and in some ways, she reckoned that he had never ceased to feel like he was naked in the dark, never ceased to feel like he would wake up to the shouts and the rough hands of orcs, never ceased to breathe the air that was less air, and more poisonous fume.
But even so, he never ceased to think of her – of how to make things easier and less painful for her, of how to make her feel both loved and worthy, and how to make the past hold less sway.

A/N: That's all, folks! Wow, I can't believe it's over. It's surreal. This is, by far, the longest fic I have ever written. Of course, on my end it's not quite goodbye, as I'm still polishing up some of the middle chapters to make sure the quality and style are consistent throughout, and I'll post another announcement once that project is complete. But otherwise, Flowers of Mordor is done! At least for now. For lovers of Frodo and Mari, I'm sure that there will be drabbles and oneshots in the future, and I plan to someday turn Rivendell, the alternative timeline version of FOM, into a longfic. So keep watching this space, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for every comment, every like, every review, and every bit of support on this incredible journey.
EXCERPT :
Marigold Baggins had always done everything exceptionally well, and when the time came, she did her utmost as a wife and mother. Handsome, kind, and well-to-do, with a comfortable hobbit hole and a most pleasant disposition, she stood before a yellow door one chilly December morning, some weeks after her forty-fifth birthday.
