I had the wildly fortunate pleasure of seeing the fourth installment of Fringe Factor, a game show from Minion Productions, where Rogue performers are gathered together in the spirit of competition and tomfoolery. Grant Knutson hosted the game, as is custom, with incredible charisma while controlling the chaos of the enthusiastic crowd and antics-prone performers. With a few new modifications and change-ups from previous years, the 2019 Fringe Factor game show was the best one yet!
The four-round challenge was still on the program, but with variations from previous incarnations of these games. Mr. Knutson had themed-teams this year; the show I saw was the Sci-Fi Geeks vs. the Comedians. Games included: coming up with a conspiracy theory based on a Dollar tree item; a creative twist on Pictionary; a balloon game in which one contestant has to have the most balloons on their person to win; and a lightning fast trivia game. The rockin’ accordionist, Strangely, provided the raucous musical entertainment throughout the show, and there was much fun had by all.
The Sci-Fi Geeks dominated the games, winning by a wide margin. Fringe Factor is one of the most distinctive shows one can catch at the Rogue Festival, and it is my hope that they keep coming back for more. If you see them on the listing in 2020, you best make time to see them, multiple times; it’s the best way to see your favorite Rogue performers like you’ve never seen them before!

ROGUE REVIEW "Fringe Factor: Rogue edition, Season 3"
Grant Knuston is back at being our host with the most in Minion Productions’ all-fun, fringe game show, Fringe Factor: Rogue edition. The Sunday night crowd was a tiny-but-mighty collective, as we rooted on the two teams: one of out-of-town artists and one of local-to-Fresno artists (the lineups change every night). I had the fortunate opportunity to be the score keeper for the Locals, as well as being a human Pictionary board for the Local team in Round 2. In all, this is an enjoyable break from all the heavy-hitting Fringe shows, and a time to root on your favorite artists in some friendly competition.
There are four rounds to the game show, including Pictionary, building the tallest freestanding sculpture using only the materials provided, and a lightning fast trivia game. In the end, the Locals won with a commanding performance in the trivia round. There are bonus points that are awarded prior to each game, which can be earned by promoting your own Fringe show on social media, promoting Fringe Factor… on social media, and by receiving a postcard with a gold emblem on it. Fringe Factor… is a way for audiences to get to see their favorite artists, or completely unknown artists, in a competitive, non-performance context. Plus, each show has a musical guest playing some tunes in-between rounds. Head on over and check out the artists whip out their competitive side, Fringe style!
Again, due to sold-out shows and crazy last-minute scheduling, I found myself jet-setting throughout the Tower District to find an 8pm show, which ended up being Fringe Factor: Rogue Edition at The Voice Shop. This game show features rotating casts of Rogue performers, so no teams will ever be the same. My showing featured the women of SHEnatra, Christopher Bange, Renne Newlove, and a few other local artists playing for bragging rights. Grant, of Minion Productions, is the charismatic host, and does a fantastic job of moving the action along while still entertaining the audience and contestants, uttering phrases such as “I eat your hatred,” when rules are imposed and booooos ensue. This is easily one of the most entertaining game shows you will ever see live.
The four rounds of competition involved a mascot creation, where the character of Joel was introduced to us, followed by Human Pictionary (one of the team members was the actual board), Overdressed Mannequin (my glasses and hat made their Rogue stage debut), and ended with a lightning round of trivia. In between rounds, as the contestants got ready for the next task, the audience was entertained by Aaron J. Shay’s excellent folk song interludes. In fact, Aaron was so good that his show, Apocalypse Songs, has now become a new must-see performance for me. He is accompanied in the final interlude by the hilariously-personable and entertaining Strangely’s Roaring Accordion, also a Rogue show this year. Fringe Factor… is a solid choice of entertainment if you want to kick back, watch some of your beloved Rogue performers get silly, and have a heck of a time laughing.
Fringe Factor: Rogue Edition will play at The Voice Shop today at 5pm, 3/10 at 8pm, and 3/12 at 3:30pm. Apocalypse Songs will play at Spectrum Art Gallery tonight at 8pm, 3/10 at 7:30pm, and 3/11 at 8:45pm. Roaring Accordion will play at Spectrum Art Gallery tonight at 7pm, 3/10 at 6:30pm, and 3/12 at 4:15pm. Go see these shows!
