I tried drawing Jamie’s frantic crayon colourings of the scenes from last chapter of MBK. I haven’t quite gotten to the point of find making my art style edgy or angsty enough, especially enough to live up to your thematics, so I improvised.

Show Me the City! (September 2016)
The night I flew into NYC, I almost completely forgot that I had a friend living there. I called him to see if he were free to hang out, and it turned out to be his one day off. I was lucky enough to get to spend a little bit of time with him after navigating the subway system with a stranger from San Francisco named Nick.
Nick was also an artist himself. He was a photographer whose dream was to photograph exotic wildlife in Asia, but was currently doing jobs like what he came to New York for, editing videos that other people had shot of wildlife from the Amazon. He was helping a woman who lived in the city, and staying a week in various AirBnbs. I’d heard of AirBnb before, but never used it. He said that it made traveling a lot more interesting and cheaper than staying in hotels, so after meeting him he sparked my curiosity into seeing what the app had to offer. I haven’t booked a hotel since.
It was funny that the one person I decided to ask for direction also had no idea where he was going and it was his first time in New York himself. I’m glad that I picked him so that we could both learn together, and I was glad to have a companion who was kind enough to even buy my subway ticket. He helped me get to my friend, Taylor, helped me learn that traveling by yourself is definitely the way to go, and that you should squeeze all you can out of it by talking to strangers and performing random acts of kindness.
I didn’t get his number or anything, but I hope that dude is doing what he loves and gets to photograph his favorite big-eyed micro-primate.
When I met up with Taylor, we went to Chinatown, Little Italy, and the Navy Pier. He was the best tour guide I could have asked for and great company at the Chinese restaurant that he told me he went to probably once a week at least. I don’t know when the next time would have even been that I’d been able to spend time with him since he lived in New York now, so I was so glad that I was gifted that time to spend with an old friend who could inspire me.
