“Hey, so, congrats on the engagement. When are you guys...y’know? Mawwiage.”
(laughs) “Oh man, one thing at a time! (ahem) Maybe next year? We’re just waiting to pay off the last of the car payments. Weddings are expensive.”
“So I’ve heard. Ok, well, I want front row seats.”
“It’s not a sporting match. You don’t get assigned seating -- at least I don’t think.”
“As ultimate matchmaker I think I get to make that call. Front row or bust.”
“Will you even be in town then?”
“Oh, yeah, are you kidding? I’ll use my vacation days, or whatever. My two best friends getting married, how can I miss it? But you know, I’ll need front row to sweeten the deal.”
“Fine. Then. How about...right next to my crazy grandmother.”
“Oheugh@#% the one that tries to kiss my ears every time? No thank you! Oh god. I think she got the inside of my ears last christmas at your place. I’ll take second row then -- or any!”
(laughs) “I knew you’d come around.”
(a pause)
“Hey, you think we would have ever dated?"
“...Why are you bringing this up now? I just got engaged.”
“I dug up my college journals the other night. I keep thinking how different things would have been if I had asked you to the graduation ball thing.”
“...I had asked you, remember?”
“You weren’t serious about it. You were just joking around.”
“I wasn’t. ... I actually liked you back then.”
“...But you weren’t even out yet. I don’t think you meant it. It would have made things complicated anyway."
“Yeah you’re right. You moved away right after.”
“...I really did want to ask you. Just for the record. ...And I would have been an AWESOME. Date. Best of your life, probably.”
(laughs) “Oh yeah? Well, too bad I’m ready to lead my boring fulfilling domestic life forever now.”
"It won’t be boring. You and Sam are so in love, It’s disgusting.”
“I know. Thanks? ...But, I get worried sometimes.”
“Don’t be. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Or I woulda stepped in a longgg time ago, girl. Sam wouldn’t have stood a chance.”
(laughs) “I will always be here. I loved you first. And I loved you longer. This (motions between them) is not going away after I get married.”
“Yeah I know. (sigh) I know. Feeling’s mutual. But no marriage for me, thanks, not even to you.”
(they laugh; there’s a beat)
“...I think we would have been really happy together. If we had dated, I mean.”
“I know. But we’re happy now, babe. Happier than if we had tried to be.”
“Yeah. You’re right. ...So you’ll be there? Front row?”
“You bet your car loans. Grandma Jane and me both.”

every year I think I’ll be done with “missed chances” scenarios, but there’s something endlessly captivating about them. too many awkward non-endings lately, trying to tie up some (fictional) loose ones now before 2016 becomes too much of a reality.
