   She knew it would happen eventually. A travelling beast hunter like Lan canât stay in one place forever. Still, she would have hoped heâd stay a bit longer. The neighborhood watch really loved his help against the invading beasts in the slums. However, he seemed enthusiastic, so she tried not to make it too hard on him and tried to mask her sadness.
   âOh, thatâs very sweet of you. I hope you liked it here in Midgar.â More like, âI hope you liked it here with meâ. âIâm sure youâll come back sometime?â Hopefully this wasnât a farwell.Â
  She remembered something and reached into her pocket for a moment. She took out her phone, typed in a number and showed it to Lan. âRemember when you asked me for my number, when we met? I think itâs about time I give it to you. That way we can keep in touch..if you like.â

Machi herself canât remember the pickup line he had used that had made her snort into her beer, but she recalled him mentioning that he tended to forget things easily after they had started to chat. Machi had already been tipsy after one too many beers, and so Lan had gotten her attention. And then more, but it had been fun. She remembered it at least, unlike him. It was probably better that way.Â
She had inteded to get dressed and sneak out of the hotel room, but she didnât manage to do so before he woke up. His question made her turn away from the mirror by the wall she was checking out her bedhair in, and face him instead.
âYou really âdoâ have a bad memory.â Machiâs tone is not malicious despite her teasing words. âIâm no one. We had a fun night and Iâm leaving the city today anyways.â

Itâs not necessarily Lanâs fault that everything went to hell, but his unforseen involvement had caught Batman off guard. âItâs fine, letâs change our tactic.â Whether Lan was with him or not, they needed to adapt to the changes around them now. They can argue about it later.

How did he remember? Well he set a million notifications in his phone and wrote actual notes of course.Â
âLan! You remembered!â She wouldnât have been mad if he didnât, Lan had all sorts of matters to think about, and Tifa had only mentioned her birthday in passing, so she had been ready to remind him, but she was pleased to see that this wasnât necessary. She opened the box and gave a delighted gasp. âItâs beautiful. Thank you so much.â Tifa leaned up to give him a grateful kiss. âIâll go to my apartment right now to get a chain and wear it.â

âCall it a feeling.â Lan will learn how accurate her âfeelingsâ usually were. When Machi had the feeling something was off, something was most definitely off. âI think weâre being watched. Theyâre really good though, I can sense nothing.â So what had tipped her off? Who knows, Machiâs intution worked in mysterious ways.
