Matt Frevola split decisions Luis Pena
WHAT a fuckin’ fight. I had it a draw.
That was a crazy wild fight. I felt like the first round was really close, the second round was 10-8 Pena and the third round was for Frevola. The first round was a case of Pena landing the more important shots but Frevola was able to land just enough with just enough takedowns to mix stuff up. I don’t understand how that second round wasn’t a 10-8 since Frevola got the absolute shit beat out of him for pretty much the better part of three minutes. He was hit with a crispy clean knee that stumbled him which when combined with Pena’s offense earlier and then offense (and sub attempts) AFTERWARDS should’ve snagged him a 10-8. In the third round, Pena’s biggest flaws were on display as his desire to attack off of his back and challenge for submissions trumps the desire to separate and his love of trading allowed Frevola back into a fight he shouldn’t have been in.
Frevola’s go to as a wrestler will always win out when people let him off the hook. Offensively he feasts on dudes like Pena and Vannata who need space to operate and fight without the same sense of urgency he does.

When Lando gets to just come forward and throw, he is such a fun fighter to watch. His hands flow really well, he understands range and distance and few dudes at 155 have the easy power that Lando has. The problem is that once the element of danger is gone and he starts to give ground, Lando doesn't have anything to force guys off of him. He got buckled and hurt bad in the first round but is such a tremendous instinct fighter that he was able to recover and find a way to stay in the fight. Frevola is just a hard dude to get out of there (even Polo Reyes has to dig in and go to the ground to get him out of there) so it's not a surprise he was able to recover. Lando going forward is an A+ fighter, Lando going backwards is an F- fighter. I thought his commitment to the body work was great early and in bits and pieces down the stretch but he should've kept at it.
As far as Matt Frevola, dude is going to live as a super prelim fighter who just has these kind of fighters. He's actually one of the rare Serra-Longo dudes who seems to excel in spite of his physical abilities as opposed to the Weidman/Sterling types who are out here struggling in spite of themselves due to what feels like a forced coaching scheme.
If there anything on this main card as good as Lando vs Frevola, we’re all going to be in good shape tonight.Â
