Don’t hit that snooze button, it’s time for our #sleptonsaturday pick where we feature movies you might have missed. Today’s pick is the 2004 French film Calvaire (The Ordeal). This film was part of the New French Extremity or French New-Wave horror movement of the early 2000’s, which included films like High Tension and Martyrs, where we were seeing a flood of ultra-violent and sexually aggressive films that many felt were a response to the right-wing extremism that France had been experiencing for years. This film is no exception to the previously mentioned as we see our protagonist kidnapped and tortured while sexual undertones and themes run rampant throughout.
