Common Man
by J J Parry 'but down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid. The detective in this kind of story must be such a man. He must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man...' - Raymond Chandler I I stared at the city, the sky was blue-black the stars were out in force but I couldn't see the moon. A blanket of lights covered the city. Each one tried to shine brighter than the other, envious of their siblings above. A vibe ran through the streets at light speed. Everyone caught the bug, including me. Then I heard that voice husky and sweet. "Dale Mason?" she began. I turned round and replied, "Who's asking?" As she drew near, my gaze focused on honey eyes, sugar lips, swinging hips packaged in a tight black number that showed more leg than a man deserved to see on the first encounter. "Lola," she said. "Lola Savona." "How can I help you?" She sat down without even an invitation. I followed suit and repeated my question. "My husband's having an affair." "Why do you believe that?" "I know the signs." "Why not divorce him?" "I intend to but not before I have proof." "This could be a costly investigation." "Money's no object." "I mean for your future." "That's a risk I'm willing to take." She seemed so self-assured, I thought. But her eyes told another story. "Are you sure?" She hesitated and then said, "I've never been more certain." II Lola sat in the nightclub amongst her group of friends. A happy smile was plastered to her face while inside her thoughts were sound waves. She looked at her watch and noticed she was a minute older than the last time she looked. "Where is Anton?" she mumbled and turned to catch a glimpse of the entrance. She saw him coming her way. He met her gaze, smiled and slid into the booth beside her. He gave her a peck on the cheek and joined in the conversation. Lola leaned against the booth. Her husband was a charmer all right. One with the movie-star looks. It was evident in the eyes of the wives as they drooled like dogs. Just a peck, Lola thought, that's what our marriage has come to. Then a picture of Dale Mason's face slowly crept into her mind. When she entered his office earlier that week, she wasn't sure she wanted to go through with her plans, but she was taken aback by the figure before her. He seemed so quiet lost to the view of the city and as she called his name, he turned and she met wicked eyes, broad chest, taut thighs packaged in casual gear made up of trousers and shirt. She immediately felt a kinship and as she explained her problems, she knew that everything would be OK. Noise broke out in her head. She returned to reality to see Anton and Dale standing opposite one another about to tear each other apart. Published in FreeXpresSion.
Colours
