I’m expecting a Lot of you to call me a devil’s advocate at best, and a boot licker/suck up at worst, but hear me out. Nintendo is not an evil company for canceling The Big House or the Splatoon tournament with #FreeMelee usernames. And here’s why. Let’s use Sega as an example of what I’m gonna talk about. Sega is lenient because Sega of America are basically the higher ups(if it weren’t for Sega of America, Sega as a whole would be doing the same thing Nintendo does. Just look at the Shining Force Controversy), but with Nintendo on the other hand, it’s still primarily a Japanese company. And Japan has Very different piracy laws than America, where this controversy is taking place. In Japan, any sort of modding is illegal, and due to their piracy laws, unauthorized emulation can get you in jail
This also probably explains why Nintendo has such a low opinion on fan games, they interpret the use of their characters as breaking copyright laws, falling into these pit holes. You don’t have to lose faith in Nintendo, These Japanese laws are flawed. And if Nintendo got some staff like the ones at Sega of America, then maybe they’ll start allowing fan games to be made, and if we’re lucky, maybe even celebrated like how Sega put fan game developers in charge of Sonic Mania. But for now, ya gotta start looking at every side, because Nintendo doesn’t deserve the amount of hate it’s been getting recently
In summary: #FreeNintendo
