Nouvelle tentative électronique de McCartney, cette fois en remixant ses anciens titres. Comme quoi les bons morceaux résistent à tout. C’est convaincant. Tout n’est pas bon, mais certains sont excellents, en particulier Rinse The Raindrops déjà un morceau très réussi, qui ici trouve une urgence et une violence augmentées.

WAIT! How many of you even remember the ICONIC Mashup/Bootleg of The Strokes and Christina Aguilera? HOW MANY OF YOU? THE MOST ICONIC SONG OF THE ‘00s TBH.

Few if any subgenres of modern music have been as unfairly maligned as the mashup (aka “bastard pop”), in which isolated vocals from one artist are layered over another song. Though producers and musicians had been grafting tracks on tracks for decades (Zappa was a famous proponent), it was a cluster of UK DJs (and their cherished Cubase software suite) who brought the concept to the fore around 2001: Go Home Productions (Mark Vidler), 2ManyDJs (Soulwax’s David and Stephen Dewaele) and The Freelance Hellraiser (Roy Kerr), whose “A Stroke of Genie-us” – fusing The Strokes’ “Hard to Explain” to Christina Aguilera’s “Genie In A Bottle” - is widely viewed as patient zero.  

Decried by purists as blasphemy and dismissed by more progressive electronica artists as a gimmick for bridge & tunnel dancefloors, mashup would have one moment in the sun – 2004’s “The Gray Album” - Danger Mouse’s hybrid of Jay-Z’s “Black Album” and The Beatles’ “White Album.” And while “The Gray Album” was certainly complex, it lacked the spirit of dumb fun that made mashups such a joy.  In some regard it elevated a genre that was never meant to be elevated and at the same time saturated an idea that had felt just a tiny bit subversive.  Soon enough there was Girl Talk and the coffin closed quickly.

In its brief heyday (2001-2005) – when the internet was still something of a copyright playground - mashup fans flocked to a host of sites for their daily fix of fused oddities – most notably GYBO (Get Your Bootleg On), an open forum for DJs of any stature to post their experiments – where on any given day you could hear Marvin Gaye croon over Slayer’s “South of Heaven” or Nancy Sinatra’s boots stomp along to “Seven Nation Army.”  The results were often clunky and suspect…but if you sifted long enough, you’d stumble on awesome.

I am sucker for mash-ups and remixes and this one, which pits Macca’s hit Coming Up against the deeper, darker cut Morse Moose and The Grey Goose, always gets me moving. 

It think it easily elevates both songs into something dramatic, fun, and frenetic.

Remix culture can get extremely messy. Some remixes are commissioned, others just show up out of thin air. A commissioned remix aims to do two things: bring attention back to the original mix, while highlighting the skills of the remixer. Both have higher sales numbers as their primary objective. A remix without record label involvement can truly be anything; it's here where creativity runs wild.
