Today Donald Trump made the rare move of trying to âsound presidentialâ when he spoke today at an event celebrating Black History Month. Suffice it to say that it didnât go well for him. If you know anything about nineteenth century American history, you know that Frederick Douglass is one of the most central and most renowned figures in the abolitionist movement. But it appears Trump may have been absent on that day, because his remarks about Douglass suggest he has no idea who the guy is. For that matter neither does Sean Spicer.
Hereâs what Donald Trump said during his Black History Month remarks today: âI am very proud now that we have a museum on the National Mall where people can learn about Reverend King, so many other things, Frederick Douglass is an example of somebody whoâs done an amazing job and is getting recognized more and more.
This is what you say about someone youâve never heard of. Itâs how you generically speak when youâre trying to keep anyone from noticing that you donât know a single thing about the person in question. So it then became Spicerâs job to clean up Trumpâs mess, and instead, he stepped in it as well.
Hereâs what Sean Spicer subsequently said in a briefing today while trying to explain away Donald Trumpâs earlier vapid remarks about Douglas: âI think the contributions of Frederick Douglass will become more and more.â Thatâs right, Spicer has no idea who Douglass is either â and he merely repeated his bossâs words in his own attempt at covering up for it. Itâs time for both of them to read up on an American hero.
