I think I first saw Frédéric's work at a Pictoplasma exhibition a few years ago. His characters don't really fit in with a lot of the friendly looking and occasionally cutesy ones that they were shown with. They are never very sociable. His work can be quite endearing, despite being fucked-up looking or, in a lot or cases, performing a lewd act.  They're almost always alone, in barren landscapes, and are always a bit sad - devoid of any occupation or purpose.

His works are generally in series', and vary in both material and style, but, despite a quite crude, outsider technique, there is a surprising amount of emotion within his work.

He'll be showing a new series of watercolours at Beach in February. We asked him a few questions: You draw some pretty weird stuff. Where do you get your inspiration from?

I work with series most of the time. I force myself to draw every day -  itis not something natural, so there are strange things that come out and it is from this that I work. There is a particular drawing that will trigger a series or sometimes the use of a particular tool. I do not mean that my work has no outside influences, I look at a lot of pictures, drawings, comics and books, but so far I don't rest directly above to work. I guess that influenced my subconscious.

What sort of posters do you have up on your walls?

I have a few original drawings on my walls by artists I like . I buy when I can afford it, often directly from the artists who are friends. My latest purchase is a drawing of Jonny Negron.

What surprises do you have in store for us at your upcoming show at Beach?

I've been working on a series for the gallery downstairs using a large colour brush. We'll also be presenting some existing drawings upstairs, alongisde the new work made especially for the show.

There will also be some new zines - I completed a series that I have not yet compiled.
