The entire neighborhood of Battery Park City in lower Manhattan was created only in the 1970s using dirt excavated for the construction of the original World Trade Center. Before the luxury condos and parks were developed, the neighborhood was simply a big dirt patch. Captured by Fred Conrad, this great vintage photograph from 1977 shows two New Yorkers on the "beach", soaking up some rays. Just 5 years later, an artist would create a fully functioning wheat field on this very spot.
