Fellows of the RCGS on Bluesky

One of Bluesky’s most attractive qualities is that it has become the platform of choice for social discussion of high-quality research and inquiry.

I am compiling the Starter Pack below, of my colleagues at the Royal Canadian Geographical Society who use Bluesky to share their activities as explorers, scientists, and educators.

Royal Canadian Geographical Society's 2024 Impact Report

This has been an extraordinary year for the Royal Canadian Geographical Society:

One of our expeditions discovered the wreck of the Quest;

Canadian Geographic became Canada's top paid-circulation magazine;

We supported field research that extended public understanding of Canada and the natural world.

I commend our CEO John Geiger and his staff for their stellar accomplishments.

Investiture Reception at the French Embassy

I thank Ambassador Michel Miraillet for hosting a reception at the French embassy, for my Royal Canadian Geographical Society colleagues who were invested into the Order of Canada.

Filmmaker James Cameron was among them.

I was delighted to attend with my friends, House Speaker Greg Fergus and past MP Derek Lee.

Canada’s Centre for Geography and Exploration

Canada’s Centre for Geography and Exploration has a suitably dramatic vista, overlooking a waterfall, two provinces, and three rivers.

It is the headquarters of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

My volunteer work as a Governor of the Society takes me there frequently.  However, if I had my office there, I suspect I would spend all my time gazing out the window, instead of working.

The 93rd Annual RCGS Dinner

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society held our 93rd Annual Dinner last night.

We honoured people who helped to create our national parks system, to research and protect every ecosystem on earth, and to take exploration into space.  They were all very humble, despite being awe-inspiring figures.

The Society’s Governors also met in-person for the first time since the pandemic.  It was lovely to finally see my colleagues beyond the frame of a video screen.

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society's Fellows Journal documents recent work by the institution and our members.

It is well worth the read.

RCGS March 2022 Board of Governors

The Governors of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society met for our March Board meeting.

I am genuinely impressed at how well our staff have navigated the pandemic.

The Society's programmes, operations, and finances are at their strongest in our ninety-three year history, under circumstances that have broken many other institutions.

The Naut’sa mawt Initiative

I commend Charlene Bearhead and Bill Nadeau, my colleagues at the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, for creating the Naut’sa mawt Initiative.

It brings the Society's national reconciliation and public education work to communities across Canada, beginning with the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada and companion Giant Floor Map for schools.

Together, the atlas and map compile and convey knowledge contributed by Indigenous nations, organisations, and individuals, about their relationship with the land, their experience of colonisation, and their quest for justice and reconciliation.

I am honoured to join Wade Davis, Jill Heinerth, Wyatt White, and Marie Wilson as the Initiative's initial Ambassadors.
