“what ‘m i supposed t’say, freckles?” his voice was quiet and serious-- not angry, like it normally would be. he wasn’t being defensive or upset that she’d asked him-- he was absolutely unsure of what to do. he had a child. he had a daughter he’d never once seen, because he’d been in jail, and when cass told him about her, it had scared him so badly he refused to meet her. a child that he knew he shouldn’t see ( because what little girl needed to know that her daddy was the kind of man he was? ) but that he still loved enough to set up a fund for.
“neither one of us has ever settled down in our damn lives. we’re both criminals-- hell, yer still wanted for murder-- an’ you want me t’know what we’re supposed t’do if you’re pregnant?” maybe it hadn’t hit her yet. she didn’t want to have a child with him. maybe she could see herself with children one day, but the father wouldn’t be him. it would be jack. she knew, didn’t she, that she only came to him when jack was preoccupied? when he wouldn’t give her the attention she craved? sawyer knew.
so why couldn’t he turn her away when she came crawling back?
“look, freckles, it ain’t a bad thought, shackin’ up with you an’ havin’ babies. but we both know it ain’t a good idea. we’d be smarter t’stroll right up t’ben an’ ask him t’take us back to the cages.”
