Ornate Mission Church Facade by Ed Gleichman
Ornate Mission Church Facade
The intricately detailed facade of the historic mission church stands against a bright blue sky. This artwork is plaster over different substrates with each of the four niches adorned by sculptures of different saints; Saint Barbara, Saint Cecilia, Saint Catherine of Siena, and St. Lucy.
There are many architectural features at Mission San Xavier del Bac, both inside and outside. The Mission took many years to construct and was finished in 1797 making it the oldest European structure in Arizona.
Located just south of Tucson in the Tohono O'odham San Xavier Indian Reservation, the mission has served as a community and spiritual center for the Tohono O'odham people and has drawn thousands of pilgrims yearly that come to pray to Saint Francis Xavier.
The San Xavier mission was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960.
