@daisy4days et al, can we talk about Victor Frankenstein/Henry Jekyll on Penny Dreadful for a second:
So I have a huge weak spot for intellectual friendships that blur the line between excitement over their work, hunger for power, and being obsessed with each other. And yes, that’s definitely a trope that exists. Think Cherik or Dumbledore/Grindelwald. So good!
The delicious thing about Victor/Henry is that they’re both most interested in the part that the other’s most trying to suppress. Victor really, really wants Hyde to come out. Henry wants to see the romantic side of Victor that he’s trying to avoid so he can get over Lily.
Obviously, this relationship is going to end perfectly for both of them.
Can we talk about the creepy third-person sexual temptation going when Henry’s talking about Lily? I can perfectly imagine the boys’ mutual masturbation sessions at school, talking about sex (since obviously neither of them would actually get any.)
I felt like Henry talking about “taming” Lily in the same terms as he did taming his own rage seems to indirectly point to Henry (or the Hyde part of him) as also being romantic objects for Victor.
Similarly, I can’t help thinking about Henry’s “beast within” in werewolf terms, which brings up an interesting compare and contrast with Victor/Ethan. Admittedly, Ethan and Henry are pretty different... unless you think about the fact that Victor is obviously fascinated with their dangerous sides.
(And did you notice the touching? So much touching! So many professions of being friends and brothers forever! Many squeals were had.)
