I firmly believe part of Kylo’s inability to dispose of Hux comes from an attachment formed from his desire to please and earn loyalty from the one person he cannot scare into being subordinate. The fact Hux approves of nothing and nobody makes the concept of having his approval a motivator for both Kylo’s underlying loyalty yet also his overt hatred.

The fact Hux is unobtainable makes him the pinnacle of desire. To be wanted by someone who wants nobody is the purest form of validation for Kylo who has wanted nothing more than praise and approval throughout his entire adolescence.

Though the latter two may be used to garner that ability to possess. Hux believes love is not only a weakness but that it’s expressed by cruelty. His infatuation becomes animalistic but also scientific. A study of who he finds desirable and a need to have their subordinance and loyalty regardless of the ethics in the method of obtaining it. It’s a game of cat and mouse, pig and wolf more than a courtship.
