Chapter 4: The Past Dies
“Hux I’m sorry!” he heard Kylo call out behind him.
“Yes you’ve said that repeatedly, you can stop now!” Hux yelled back, refusing to turn to look at him.
“Hux I swear I didn’t want- I would never-”
He knew Kylo was telling the truth. He had never really believed he’d just wanted to fuck him. He didn’t know why he’d blown up like that. He hadn’t been able to understand a lot of his recent behaviors. Hux pulled off his jacket tying it around his waist and wiped sweat off his brow. It was likely from stress, He wasn’t thinking straight.
“Hux please, you haven’t talked to me all night, it’s been hours!” Kylo whined.
Hux sighed and stopped, dust billowed up around his weathered boots.
“I’m sorry.” He mumbled under his breath.
“Huh?”
“I’m sorry.” Hux said a little louder. “I argued with you for no reason. Now let's move on.”
“Oh- Okay…” Kylo said, sounding confused.
“We need to keep alert when entering the city. It’s one of the most high risk areas one can go.” Hux explained making a mental catalog of all of his weapons. “I’d rather have you paying attention to our surroundings than begging me for forgiveness.”
The density of buildings had gotten much thicker, transitioning from suburban town to the outskirts of a once bustling city. The streets were dusty and thick grass and weeds came up through cracks and potholes, crawling up the sides of rotting brick buildings where paint chipped away from lack of maintenance. Graffiti served as the markers of travelers that had once passed through. Some were simple tags, names forgotten to society, others were murals. Hux noticed how a lot of these murals were recent. Painted faces of the dead lined the wall of an abandoned strip mall with birth and death dates as if they were headstones in a grave yard.
“How did you die?” Hux asked suddenly as he slowed to look at the paintings.
“It’s a long story…” Kylo replied solemnly, his voice trailing off as he ran a boney hand along the dirty brick.
“Talking will keep us sharp.” Hux offered, looking over at Kylo and studying his expression. He had a deep sadness behind his pale eyes and Hux could almost see the shadows of tears that had fallen from them many times.
Kylo took a breath, or rather mimicked one, and nodded. “Well in the beginning of the apocalypse when the virus was still airborne, there were quarantine camps made for people living in areas with high infection rates.”
“I heard about those.” Hux nodded. “I was still trying to hold on to my career at that time. The first strain of the virus didn’t create zombies, so I wasn’t worrying about my own survival yet.”
“Yeah, people weren’t turning yet. It was more of a pandemic than an apocalypse at that point.” Kylo continued. “Infected individuals could only survive in the zombified state for about 24 hours, and they were basically brain dead anyway. It was an imminent death sentence.”
Hux continued forward, listening silently. The morning fog hung heavy over them, and obscured the silhouettes of skyscrapers in the nearing distance. Kylo spoke quietly and softer now, as they carried on. It was as if he was handling each sentence with delicacy.
“My uncle ran one of those quarantine camps, and I worked there.”
“You were a doctor?” Hux questioned curiously. He had to admit it would not have been the kind of job he’d expect for Kylo.
“Intern. I was in medical school at the time.” Kylo clarified. “I was more focused on sports medicine and physical therapy, but when a pandemic of that size happens you need everyone you can get.”
“I can imagine it wasn’t a very pleasant job.” Hux offered.
“No, it wasn’t.” Kylo sighed, a pained expression crossed his face as he recalled the days leading up to his death. “I worked with the non-infected individuals. I had to deal with a lot of people losing family members. It’s hard not to be emotionally involved in that.”
“I’m sure.”
“Anyway, once the airborne strand died off the camps were going to get shut down.”
“But then the second strand, the zombie virus began.” Hux finished for him. And his hand fell beside him as they walked, brushing against Kylo’s cold fingers.
“Yeah, that one was relatively easy to keep a handle on at first.” Kylo nodded.
“Untreatably so. It’s transmissible by bite, much easier to contain than an airborne pathogen.” Hux agreed.
“Yeah that's basically it.” Kylo nodded. “I never really got many details of how it spread so rapidly because the first guy to get infected wasn’t in one of the camps.”
“It was simply unfortunate circumstances.” Hux sighed. “I don’t think anyone knows how it got this bad. At least none of the scientists working on it did.”
“I’m surprised scientists would trust you enough to give you the details after what happened.” Kylo commented.
“Oh they didn’t.” Hux frowned. “My sibling worked at a lab that was working on creating antiviruses. That's how I know about it. I wasn’t really in the loop when it came to the apocalypse, since the government blacklisted me from practically everywhere, but they told me what they knew. Well, at least what the tech department heard whispers about.”
“You have a sibling?” Kylo asked curiously.
“Yes?” Hux replied. “You find that surprising?”
“No I guess- I’m just surprised you hadn’t mentioned them.” He responded.
“Well I haven’t told you much about my life have I?” Hux pointed out.
“That's true.” Kylo commented, scratching at his palms.
“We didn’t grow up together.” Hux explained. “It’s complicated. And, I-” His words faltered as he choked on them, water forming in the crease of his eyes. “I don’t know what happened to them. After their correspondence with me stopped- well, I just don’t like to think about it.”
“Right, sorry.” Kylo mumbled, looking down at the road ahead of them.
“No, It’s alright.” Hux assured him. “You’re telling your story, it's only fair I tell you some of mine.”
“What was- is their name?”
“Techie was the one they chose.” Hux smiled. “I always thought they deserved a brighter future than what I had in store for myself- I can only hope that…” His voice trailed off. “Did you have any siblings?”
“No, I was an only child.” Kylo responded. “I made up a sister at one point.” he laughed. “You know, just an imaginary friend? I apparently fooled the daycare lady for a while.”
Hux smiled at the thought of a young Kylo. Chubby faced, a mop of black hair, and bright eyes; were they brown, green, or blue? But most importantly he was happy and alive, babbling about an imaginary sibling like everyone ought to know her. Nothing could have been more different than the childhood he had and for some reason Hux was glad that Kylo still had those memories to look back on.
“Well one day I was doing my rounds around the camp.” Kylo jumped back into his story. “Someone was in distress outside the gate. I had promised my uncle Luke I wouldn’t go out there, no matter how hard it was. But I broke that promise.”
“And you got bit?” Hux asked, though it was obvious.
“Yes…” Kylo sighed. “And I returned to the camp like nothing happened. I don’t know why.”
“What happened to the camp?” Hux inquired with concern. “You said you left before the infection took over?”
“I- I wasn’t entirely truthful.” He admitted. “I tried to hide the infection, act like it wasn’t there. It wasn’t taking effect like I had expected. My brain still felt mostly intact, but my craving for human flesh got worse and worse, and I couldn’t keep human food down.”
“Surely someone would have noticed.” Hux commented.
“My uncle,” Kylo nodded. “He noticed how thin I was getting. I knew it was only a matter of time before he’d order me to get a medical examination, and the infection had spread so far at that point there was no way I could hide it. I should have been dead compared to our other patients, but I wasn’t.”
“Except you were.” Hux corrected. “You were just sentient.”
“Yes.” Kylo agreed. “I didn’t realize at the time that the virus had already killed me, or at least my body. But either way I knew I couldn’t hide it forever. So I planned to leave the next day. But when I awoke I wasn’t myself. My refusal to feed had switched something on in my brain and I became a monster.”
“The same thing that happened when you killed your father…” Hux responded quietly with realization.
“I attacked several nurses and patients. I don’t remember if I bit any.” Kylo continued, his voice shaky, and he stood still, staring off into the distance as if he were watching his own memory play out before him. “In a moment of clarity I begged my uncle to kill me. I remember how he looked at me. There was so much pain and fear in his eyes." Kylo looked down at his feet and too a deep breath for continuing. "I was scared he would do the very thing I had asked him too, part of me was even angry he considered it. But he couldn't do it. He threw me out instead. I still don’t know if he made the right decision… If he had known what I would do to my dad…”
“I’ve taught myself it’s not productive to dwell on the what ifs.” Hux replied reassuringly. “You’re here now, you just have to figure out how to live with that.”
His hand brushed against Kylo’s again and this time he held it there. He laced his fingers with the zombie’s, and gripped his hand gently. Kylo’s cold skin was soothing to his own, pink and freckled from the harsh sun. Kylo glanced down at their clasped hands but said nothing, and the two continued forward, neither of them willing to let go.
For the next few minutes they walked in silence and Hux began to notice the tranquility in the quiet that Kylo had mentioned in the park. He’d never really had the chance to enjoy silence. It had always felt so isolating when he was working in the government.
When it was quiet he was alone with his thoughts. Even if he was stuck listening to other scientists drone on about nonsense he already knew the answer too, at least his mind wasn’t as loud. He would sometimes talk to himself while he worked alone just to have something to listen to. But now he found he had nothing to say, and his mind was no longer screaming at him.
He watched Kylo as he looked off towards the horizon. A soft smile creased his grey skin, and his hair rippled gently in the light breeze that circled them. In any other circumstances Hux would have hated him. He was too in touch with his emotions, too strong, too handsome. Hux couldn’t imagine Kylo not being popular when he was alive. And Hux had grown up to learn that smarts always lost to popularity. Which, in a strange sense, made him possessive of the creature now. It was likely only a coincidence that the zombie had chosen him as his companion. If he’d come a day earlier he would have been eaten instead. But that wasn’t what happened, and now Kylo was his.
Kylo turned his head, causing them to lock eyes. Out of embarrassment Hux quickly turned away but didn’t notice the loose brick in the middle of their path. He yelped in surprise as his boot caught on the ruble and he fell to the ground, bracing himself on his hands and elbows, wincing as the concrete scraped his palms.
“Oh shit! Are you okay?” Kylo asked with concern, reaching out his hand to help Hux up.
“Yes I’m fine.” Hux huffed annoyed, taking the zombies hand once more and hopping to his feet. But in the sudden movement he yelped and doubled over in pain. His head felt dizzy a moment and thought he might throw up. But he squinted his eyes shut till the nausea passed and righted himself again, grabbing back on to Kylo's arm for support.
Kylo looked over him with concern. "What was that?" He stammered.
"Just a twinge. It's fine." Hux replied unconcerned. "I'm not in the best of health. No one is."
"Well if you need anything let me know." Kylo added, clasping Hux's hand again, and squeezing it tightly.
They were at the entrance to the city. Abandoned skyscrapers towered over them, lining the street on both sides. Their dark windows reflected the blinding sunlight. In front of them the rubble of a fallen building bisected their path.
“Sorry I didn’t see the brick.” Kylo apologized. “My eyesight isn’t great if I’m not really really close up.”
“No, I should have seen it.” Hux sighed and turned to Kylo.
All zombies had a glossy look to their eyes, so when he had first seen the creature it wasn’t something he’d found to be out of place. But it had never actually occurred to him that the glossiness wasn’t simply a phenotypical trait but because zombies were often blind. Things were starting to add up. Kylo had seen the tattoo when they were close together in the shower, but he hadn’t seen the patch on Hux’s jacket when they first met. He wondered how much of him Kylo could really see.
“That's right, your vision must be impaired. I don’t know why I never thought to ask about it.”
“I thought you wouldn’t think I was very useful protection if I mentioned it.” Kylo admitted. “I mean with that, and my bad leg...”
“Well you’ve already proven yourself.” Hux reminded him. “Just maybe try not to get shot the next time I’m attacked.”
Kylo looked like he was about to say something but decided not to and began climbing over the rubble instead, still grasping Hux’s arm and pulling him up onto the pile of brick and drywall.
“Well we reached the city.” Kylo said. “Now where do you want to go?”
“We keep moving onward." Hux explained dryly.
“That's it?” Kylo asked, confused. “You're just going to head in one direction for all of eternity? Why even come to someplace so heavily infested if you don’t have a reason?”
“Why do you always ask questions?” Hux groaned. “You wanted companionship and you're getting it.”
“Yeah and I’m trying to understand my companion.” Kylo huffed, his voice echoing down the empty road.
“Well maybe I don’t have an explinat- GET DOWN!” Hux shouted, cutting off his own sentence and dropping to his stomach.
“What?” Kylo asked as a bullet flew past his head and landed in the ruble by where Hux lay. Hux was already positioning his sniper rifle. They were on a slightly elevated plane on top of the rubble, but they were completely in the open.
There was a crunch of bone as Kylo sank to his knees. “what’s going on, who's shooting at us?”
“It doesn’t matter who it is,” Hux grunted, scanning his surroundings through the sites of his rifle, trying to find the gunman. “We're getting shot at and we're completely out in the open!” More bullets zinged past them and Kylo positioned himself so he was blocking Hux.
“What are you doing?!” Hux yelled. “I can’t find the target if you’re blocking me.”
“The bullets aren’t going to kill me. Forget about finding the guy, I'll cover you so we can get to safety.” Kylo explained hurriedly.
Bullets were flying from two separate directions now, three of them sinking into Kylo’s back as he scrambled to position his body over Hux.
“All right all right. I get it.” Hux replied in a panic, quickly scrambling to his knees. “Give me enough room so I can at least stand up.”
Kylo pulled Hux to his feet, gripping onto him tightly and pressing their bodies together, so he could act as his shield.
“Where do we go?” Kylo yelled over the raining bullets as they sprinted off in a random direction, slipping into an alleyway between the skyscrapers.
“Just keep going!” Hux yelled, and he had to admit to himself, he didn’t know where to go either.
As they ran down the alleyway zombies came tumbling out of back doors and climbing up from behind trash cans. They were coming from every direction and Hux could hear the heavy boots of their far more alive assailants closing in on their position. Kylo was snarling and growling like a wild animal, tearing off zombie limbs and throwing their mangled corpses into building walls. Hux almost wished he had time to watch, the ferocity in his movements and the blood in his long hair was almost mesmerizing.
“What do we do?” Kylo yelled over the hoard.
“over the fence.” Hux called back, pointing to the fence at the back of the alley as he kicked a zombie away from him and hacked off another’s already loose jaw. “ Keep the zombies alive if you can. It will slow the others down.”
Kylo nodded and grabbed Hux by the waist, tossing him over the fence with no warning. Hux landed hard in the dead grass on the opposite side, gasping as the wind was blown out of him and rolling out of the way as Kylo jumped over to join him. Landing with a loud crunch of his bad ankle buckling, which made Hux cringe. Kylo however did not seem fazed.
“Uhm you lost a finger.” Hux grimaced as he stood up and brushed himself off, nodding to Kylo's lost pinkie finger that had gotten caught on the fence.
“Oh thanks.” Kylo responded casually, grabbing it and slipping it into his pocket. “That one is always falling off, I’ll fix it later.”
“Right…” Hux nodded slowly in bewilderment. “Let's keep moving before they catch up.”
The two hurried along the fence line looking for places that they could find cover. “What about here?” Kylo asked over Hux’s shoulder, pulling on a locked backdoor of one of the skyscrapers. “It’s locked but I can break it down.”
“Not the buildings!” Hux exclaimed in a hushed yell, “You saw how the zombies poured out of them. We go in there and we become the center of a feeding frenzy.”
“Where do we go then?”
Before Hux could answer, the two of them turned abruptly when they heard the thud of boots. Their attackers were pulling themselves over the fence. Kylo grabbed Hux and slid through a broken gate into another alley. Pilled against the brick wall of an old building was a bunch of musty furniture someone had intended to throw out. Mattresses with springs sticking out stacked on top of one another, an old stained armchair, a couch with no cushions, and a weathered bar stool sat in a rotting heap. Hux crawled between a gap in the mattresses, pressing himself up against the chair and dragging Kylo with him. As the footsteps drew closer they began to hear voices. Kylo pulled the couch in front of their hiding space with ease, but left a small gap so they could see who was chasing them.
Two sets of boots, not dissimilar from Hux’s, stopped at the entrance of the alley. There was creaking of hinges as one of the two pushed on the half open gate and took a step towards where Kylo and Hux were hiding, but the other person stood still.
“Sir, I don’t understand why we’re still going after them. They aren’t going after us.” A shy voice called out from the second man.
“You’re too sentimental, Mitaka. I would have thought you'd've gotten over that weakness by now.” An older man responded gruffly, stepping into the alleyway. Mitaka followed with an anxious urgency in his stride.
“I am not sentimental Sir, it just seems counterproductive. We’ve gone off course and I’m simply trying to be efficient with our time and resources.”
“Ha! You sound just like the bastard sometimes.” The old man sneered.
Hux seethed from where he hid and Kylo slapped his four fingered hand over his mouth. Hux gave him a look of warning but turned back to face the group as a pair of large steel toed boots came into view. A woman's voice joined the other two, followed by the sound of her holstering her weapon.
“I’m not doing this anymore Pryde, they’re already dead anyway.” She scoffed.
“You know as well as I do we must take out the competition!” the old man snapped, stomping his boot impatiently.
“I don’t give a fuck. I’ll blow anyone's face off if I see them but I’m not going out of my way to hunt people down, it's a waste of time.” The woman answered angrily.
“I did not expect this from you, Captain.” The old man chided. “Are you afraid the zombies will get you?” He added in a mocking tone.
“Watch your mouth Enric, or I’ll blow your face off instead.” She growled.
“I really think we should just get back on track…” Mitaka added meekly, but the other two did not seem to hear.
“I am neutralizing a threat!” The old man exclaimed.
“No,” The woman replied coldly. “Your fragile ego is taking us off course for no reason. And frankly I don’t give a shit. Our group is down to three and that should concern you.”
“Well you didn’t try to keep Cardinal from leaving,” he huffed.
“That's because I don’t need a group to survive.” She asserted. “An idiot like you does. Now give it up and turn around.”
The old man snarled but seemed to comply. He stepped back out past the gate and around the corner as the other two followed. Hux held his breath till he could no longer hear their footsteps.
“Okay what the hell was that?!” Kylo said, shaking his head as he pushed the couch aside and crawled out from behind the arm chair.
“It seems like they were fighting.” Hux answered plainly, blinking at the light and stretching his legs.
“Well obviously” Kylo grumbled, “but I mean why are they after us?”
“They're not after us specifically.” Hux replied, shaking his head, though he could feel his chest tightening.
“Cut the crap Hux!” Kylo explained.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Hux insisted.
“Hux, they clearly are targeting us! I knew they were shooting at you and not me in the park!” The zombie shook his head with exasperation. “And you never freak out when you get attacked unless it’s them.”
“I-“ but before Hux could continue Kylo cut him off angrily.
“And don’t try to say they were different people than the ones in the park, "and it’s all a big coincidence"!”
“You’re delusional!” Hux shouted and Kylo lunged at him, grasping his shoulders and thrusting him against the dusty mattresses.
“WHO ARE THEY?!” He growled.
Hux coughed, pain filled his arms as Kylo gripped him too tightly. He stared up into the Monster’s wild eyes and jagged teeth, feeling his skin prickle with fright. “They’re- They’re my old coworkers." Hux stuttered.
Kylo relaxed slightly but didn’t move from where he crouched over Hux. “Your old coworkers?"
“Yes…” Hux sighed.
“But why would they be trying to kill you?” Kylo interrogated.
“I wasn’t always alone.” Hux admitted, his voice still quivering slightly. “When I first set out towards the city I was with several other scientists and faculty members. We banded together, out of necessity rather than mutual trust. Slowly our numbers dwindled, some killed, some left…”
“Why didn't you tell me?” Kylo asked.
“It didn’t seem relevant.” Hux shrugged and fidgeted with his dirt smudged fingers.
“Did you get separated from them? Why do they hate you?” Kylo continued his line of questioning.
“Tensions were high to begin with.” Hux explained. “Enric Pryde, the older man, He knew my father. I didn’t like him very much, and nor he me. Phasma, the woman, former head of security, doesn’t like anyone. And Mitaka? He was just a low level scientist. Very efficient, but no real say in anything, against the other two at least.”
“So you all didn’t get along?” Kylo questioned, raising an eyebrow and sitting up on his knees. “Doesn’t seem like a good enough reason to get separated from your group.”
“There was a falling out. If we stayed together it wouldn’t be long before someone was killed. So…” Hux sighed “The remainder of the group decided to kick me out as a solution.”
“Didn’t really seem to solve their getting along problems.” Kylo remarked.
“Well regardless, that is what happened.” Hux huffed. “They let me leave freely. Something the others who left our group had not been afforded-“
“What do you mean by that?” Kylo asked, genuinely confused.
Hux rolled his eyes. “Anyone who tried to leave was killed on the spot. You don’t leave competition to roam free, especially if they know your weaknesses.”
“You scare me with how casually you mention stuff like that.” Kylo frowned. “So that other guy they mentioned?”
“Dead like the rest of them.” Hux sighed. “It’s a shame, he always liked me. If he had been around when everything went down he may have pushed for me to stay.”
“So they let you leave freely but still actively hunt you down?” Kylo asked, perplexed.
“Me leaving freely was under the condition that I would be treated like any other competition if they saw me again. It seems Pryde is taking this too personally and giving me special treatment.” Hux scoffed.
When Hux turned back to Kylo he realized how close they were together. Hux sat with his back pressed against the mattresses, and Kylo kneeled in front of him, broad shoulders casting shadow over Hux’s reddening face. He made eye contact with the zombie and he could tell he too had felt the unspoken tension. Kylo’s pondering expression faded into a coy smile Hux had not seen since the gas station. He leaned forward so Hux was in eyeline with his pecs and placed his gnarled arms on either side of him, caging Hux in so all he could do was shrink into himself.
“You know you shouldn’t have apologized to me earlier.” Kylo said softly, to break their heavy silence.
“What?” Hux replied, and an embarrassing squeak crept into his voice as he found himself too distracted with Kylo's body to comprehend what was being said to him. Even if Zombies had no outer heat, Hux was feeling it now.
“When you apologized for accusing me of wanting to fuck you. You shouldn’t have.” Kylo continued.
“Well I- I argued for no reason. It was pointless.” Hux responded with a smile that came out so awkward and lopsided he wanted to tear it from his face.
Kylo leaned down so his chest was pressed against Hux’s and his lips graced his neck. Hux should have told him to back away, a zombie getting so close to that vulnerable area should have concerned him. But he found himself unable to speak as he felt the vibrations of Kylo’s voice tickle his skin.
“No. I did want to fuck you. I did want to bend you over and stick my zombie cock in your ass.” Kylo whispered crudely.
“You- You did?” Hux replied stupidly.
Kylo laughed, his laugh was deep and hearty. There was a warmth to it that his zombified state did no reflect. “Zombie’s are gluttonous, I’m no different.”
Hux laid frozen, looking up into Kylo's face. His eyes gazed in his direction, but not exactly at him. Even though he knew it was likely because of his impaired vision, Hux felt as if the Zombie was looking through him. Uncoiling the shame and anxiety that twisted in his gut, peering into his mind where all his soft and gentle thoughts about Kylo lay waiting to be discovered. And in that moment his nervousness faded and Hux realized he had been wanting this every sense they had met. In the way he noticed subtle changes in Kylo’s expressions, in the way his skin and hair felt in his hands, in the way he talked about his life and his past; Hux had wanted Kylo to be his and Kylo had been offering it for sometime now.
With a breath of chilling air Hux reached out his hands running them along Kylo’s face, feeling not just the parts that remained but what was scarred and torn. His hands stung from the acidity of Kylo’s exposed flesh but he did not recoil, he wanted it all. He pulled Kylo towards him and the Zombie moved synchronously, but as their lips were about to meet Kylo pulled away sitting back up on his knees with a panicked expression.
“We can’t!” Kylo exclaimed.
“Fine.” Hux grunted, climbing up onto his feet. “If that's how you want it.”
“No- No it’s not.” Kylo shook his head frantically.
“What is my breath that bad?” Hux huffed sarcastically, searching for his jacket amongst the pile of furniture.
“Well…”
“I’m sorry I don’t have toot paste!” Hux scowled, crossing his arms.
“I have a hyperactive sense of smell, remember.” Kylo remarked.
“Right so you want to fuck me but I’m too disgusting to get near my face. I get it now.” he grumbled.
“No no it wasn’t the smell.” Kylo assured him. “It’s just, you know… I can’t kiss you- EVER, or you’ll get infected by my saliva… ”
“Oh-.” Hux answered. “I- I forgot.”
Before Hux had the chance to tell himself how stupid he’d been, Kylo sprang onto his feet. He grabbed Hux’s wrists and turned him around in one swift motion, pressing their bodies against the brick wall of the alley.
“I can still fuck you though~” Kylo whispered into Hux’s ear.
“You think I’d give myself to you?” Hux smirked, rocking his hips back so they pressed into Kylo’s crotch. Kylo pushed back against him and Hux was pressed harder into the wall.
“Oh I do.” Kylo remarked coyly and his hands released Hux’s wrist sliding them down Hux’s sides like he’d done in the shower, running along the contour of Hux’s shirt as if he were mapping out his body. Kylo reached around Hux’s waist finding his belt buckle and unhooking it so it fell around their feet. The Zombie’s fingers slipped into the waistband of Hux’s pants. His body shivered as he felt Kylo’s cold hand travel to the base of his cock.
“Say please.” Kylo hissed.
“Please~” Hux moaned and he shrieked as Kylo’s hand found his cock and squeezed tightly. Then his pants were slipping from his hips, sitting just below his thighs where they caught against the wall. Kylo’s finger traced along his hip, then to his ass. He circled his hole, encouraging it to relax and then pressed inside. The stretch burned. He wasn’t prepared, but his body had already given into the pain, his mind turning to Mush as Kylo fingered him, in and out with precise motion. There was a clinicalness to it that Hux wondered if he’d picked up from medical school with nurses far more young and attractive than him. Hux had his fair share of sexual encounters, but nothing like this. He had never allowed himself to be made so vulnerable, but this time he had not only allowed it but asked for it.
Hux hadn’t noticed how much time had passed, or that there were not one, not two, but three fingers within him now. A shuddering moan shook his body as the burning stretch pulled at his insides. But the fullness left him as the fingers were withdrawn and he felt something else at his entrance. Kylo, deep in focus, gave him no warning when he pushed the tip of cock inside. Hux screamed at the sudden intrusion, feeling every nerve in his body quaver with anticipation. “FUCK!” He screamed as Kylo began to fuck himself deeper, thrusting Hux into the wall.
“You like that?” Kylo said as he panted.
“Fuck mmm god- I wasn’t expecting that.” Hux stuttered through shaky breaths.
“I didn’t want you to overthink it and tense up,” Kylo explained. “mmm god you’re so tight… I was right at the gas station, you haven’t had anything like this in a while.”
“Neither have you.” Hux retorted. But his snarky comment was cut short as Kylo sunk into him again and began to thrust with increasing ferocity, overtaken by the mutual sensation of their lust.
Hux’s body was screaming; his hole inflamed and red from the unprepared intrusions, flexing to fit Kylo’s girth, his face and hands scraped from being pounded against the brick. But it felt like bliss.
“Is that all you’ve got?” Hux growled. “You’re a monster god damn it!”
As Kylo slipped back out he grabbed Hux’s waist and threw him against the mattresses, pouncing on top of where he fell. Kylo’s hands fell to Hux’s abdomen slipping under the fabric of his shirt and sliding it so it rolled up over his pecks. A tinge of fear crossed Hux’s expression as he saw saliva drip from Kylo’s mouth and he wondered what would happen if hunger overtook him in this moment. But Kylo wiped the saliva away and flipped Hux over onto his stomach pulling him to his knees as his cock found his opening again.
Kylo fucked him with a an animalistic nature that was feral and unforgiving. Clinicalness was no longer present in the way his cock stretched his hole and pushed deeper, pounding into his prostate till he saw stars. Hux thought he may be the only person alive to know it was in fact true that if a zombie moved enough their inner heat could be felt from the outside. He fucked him into the mattress witch muffled his screams of pain and pleasure. Then his hand gripped around Hux’s shaft and made quick work of his erection. Cum splattered into the mattress painting Hux's thighs.
“I’m- I’m so…OH!” Kylo screamed, but it wasn’t a scream of pleasure and suddenly all motions stopped. “Oh- Oh shit… oh fuck! OH NO!” Kylo mumbled frantically.
“What happened? What's going on?” Hux asked in confusion trying to turn his head off the mattress.
“DON’T MOVE!” Kylo yelled.
“Kylo what happened?!” Hux demanded.
“My uh-” Kylo’s voice trailed off and he whispered, “My dick fell off…”
“YOU’RE WHAT??????” Hux shrieked, and he realized that while the thrusts had stopped he still felt the fullness of Kylo’s cock within him. “IT’S STILL IN ME?!”
“It’s fine, it's fine!” Kylo stammered nervously. “Body parts fall off all the time.”
“Not in my fucking arse Kylo!”
“Well that's why they always say “use a flared base!”” Kylo joked awkwardly.
“You WERE the flared base you imbecile!" Hux exclaimed.
“I know I know I’m sorry.” Kylo apologized. “I haven’t had sex sense before the pandemic… I didn’t know that would happen.”
“Well get it out of me!” Hux demanded, hyper aware of his quite embarrassing and revealing position with his face pressed against the mattress, ass in the air, and his pants around his ankles.
“Yeah yeah I am. Just give me a second, I’m going to sew it back on.”
“You’re going to what?” Hux’s eyes widened.
“Yeah there’s still a bit sticking out.” Kylo replied, trying to sound casual.
“No no, absolutely not!” Hux responded. “What if you accidentally sew us together!”
“I won't,” Kylo insisted.
“Kylo you’re nearly blind!” Hux exclaimed, wishing he could crawl away and never return to this moment.
“Well if I try to fish it out it might go in further and I don’t think any of us want that.” Kylo explained. “I’m just going to do this.” Hux felt a cold palm on his ass cheek. “Hold still.”
Hux held his breath for several long minutes, awaiting the inevitable needle prick when Kylo missed his mark. But after listening to fifteen minutes of frustrated grunting he finally found his ass being relieved of pressure.
“There I got it!” Kylo cheered.
“Oh thank fuck!” Hux sighed with relief and finally let his body collapse onto the mattress, his knees sore from holding his position.
“See? Good as new!” Kylo said, standing up and helicoptering his newly sewn on penis like some immature frat guy.
“Put your pants back on. I don’t want to look at that Thing” Hux hissed.
Kylo laughed with amusement. “Alright, if it will make you feel better.” He responded, pulling back on his torn pants.
Hux pulled his knees into his chest and pressed his back against the mattress stack, still wanting to crawl into himself. Kylo came to sit beside him, placing a weathered hand on his knee. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you, it was an accident I promise.”
“Yes Kylo, I don’t think most people would intentionally rip off their cock.” Hux scoffed.
“Does your ass hurt? I went pretty hard.” Kylo asked with an air of concern.
“It will be fine.” Hux assured him, but he still felt cemented in his spot, not wanting to move or look at him.
“I- Is there anything I can do?” Kylo asked quietly.
“I just-” Hux sighed. “I just feel like I’m forgetting myself.”
“What do you mean?” Kylo questioned, confused.
“I keep getting distracted. I’m wasting time, wasting resources, on things that don’t matter.”
“Yeah great I go to comfort you and you say I don’t matter.” Kylo huffed, shuffling away from him.
“It’s not personal.” Hux added. “This should never have happened-”
“No, stop it!” Kylo snapped, thrusting a bony finger into Hux’s face.
“What?” Hux replied bewildered.
“You’re not getting away with this anymore. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Just because everything has gone to shit doesn’t mean you stop feeling things.”
“Kylo I-”
“Shut up. You enjoyed getting fucked, you even enjoy my company. Don’t make it my fault.”
“How mature.” Hux rolled his eyes.
“You’re the one being immature and I’m not putting up with it anyone!” Kylo asserted. “No more of this back and forth, I like you, I don’t like you bull shit. We’re here. We’re together. We both want it. Stop being such an ass about it.”
Hux looked down at his knees. “I-I’m sorry…” he mumbled meekly, tears welling up in his eyes.
Kylo’s voice softened as scooted back beside him. “I know. And I know you’re just freaking out, because, no offence but, I don’t think you’ve had many friends before. You just need to snap out of it and get over yourself. You’re good now, cry if you need to, we’re all under a fuck ton of stress I won’t judge.”
“I really hate how good you are at this.” Hux replied, shaking through tears.
“I think I'm just mimicking my dad." He responded with an awkward laugh, scratching his head. “Here let me help you get dressed.”
Hux melted into Kylo’s arms, sobbing quietly as the zombie pulled the rest of the napkins from Hux’s pack and cleaned off his body. He pulled Hux’s pants back up around his hips and pulled his shirt back down, then found his jacket and put his belt on top of it, placing them both beside him.
“You didn’t have to do that.” Hux sniffled.
“I really should have done more.” Kylo sighed. “But there's not much in terms of aftercare out here. Do you feel a bit better now?”
Hux nodded silently.
“Thought so.” Kylo smiled. “Crying helps. At least it does for me. And you shouldn't stress about time and resources. We can find resources and the world isn’t going to disappear from under you. If you get distracted so what?”
“It’s not as simple as that…” Hux replied, rubbing his face and sitting up straighter, trying to put himself back together.
“I know Kylo sighed.”
“I wish you did.” Hux whispered, but Kylo didn’t seem to hear.
“You know I wasn’t very good at making friends either.” Kylo commented awkwardly, as if he had known that Hux had been thinking the opposite.
“Surely you're just being humble.” Hux laughed, pulling back on his belt and jacket and gingerly standing up from the mattress.
“No really! I’m telling the truth.” Kylo assured him. “I mean I was the weird emo kid in high school, and not the cool kind. The kind that punches walls and yells at strangers in the hallway just for walking too close.”
“Well that's high school.” Hux commented as if he knew what that was like. His father hadn’t seen much value in public education and sent him off to a military academy instead.
“Yeah well I didn’t really change when I got older either.” Kylo admitted. “I just got more responsibility that I didn’t know what to do with. Kind of blew up on my family. My uncle asked me to work with him to try and patch things up actually.”
“Well you’ve certainly changed then.” Hux commented, and scanned the alley for zombies before heading back out towards the road.
“I’ve had time to sit with myself.” Kylo admitted. “Death changes your perspective on things. Sometimes it makes you hard, other times it makes you soft.”
“Please be more careful with your word choice, I don’t want to think about dicks right now.” Hux groaned.
“My bad.” Kylo laughed. “I did have some friends though.”
Hux continued to listen as they carried on down the road. His body was sore but he ignored it, watching their surroundings as Kylo’s voice added to the ambience of the city. They came up to a barbed wire fence that blocked the rest of the street, a hole was torn in the center and rusted hazard signs lay on the ground beside it.
“A No Go Zone.” Kylo commented behind him.
“Well the government isn’t here to enforce it now.” Hux replied gruffly, pulling his knife from its thigh holster and stepping through the gap in the fence.
A sense of dread hung over him as they stepped through and the air felt thicker. News footage and headlines flashed across his mind as he remembered the sounds of family members screaming out on his TV screen to their loved ones as they became separated, sentenced for death.
“Peach Trees.” Kylo grimaced, reading the sign on a crumbling apartment complex. “Sounds like a lovely place to live.”
“Never was.” Hux sighed. “It’s no secret the government targeted impoverished neighborhoods first.”
“I think... Zombies up ahead?” Kylo pointed at a hoard hobbling towards them.
“I see them.” Hux responded, grabbing his hunting rifle and aiming for their legs.
These zombies hardly looked human. Skin melted off their bones and puss poured out of their vermin eaten eyes. Some crawled on the ground with their entrails dragging behind them. The elements had slowly eaten away at their bodies till they hardly posed a threat. Hux and Kylo made their way through them with ease, his knife cutting through their rotting flesh like butter.
“They must’ve been some of the first infected if they deteriorated that bad.” Kylo commented.
“Or they’ve been living in bad conditions.” Hux answered back, looking up at the sky as heavy grey clouds blotted out the sun. “Looks like it’s going to rain, lovely.”
“Shit we’ve gotta find shelter.” Kylo replied, looking around frantically.
“We’ll be fine as long as it doesn’t storm.” Hux assured him, slinging his hunting rifle over his back again.
“You will, but I won't,” Kylo pointed out. “The elements and me, don’t mix. Unless you want me to look like those guys sooner rather than later, I need to find shelter.”
“I didn’t think about that.” Hux sighed with frustration. “I really need to keep going, Kylo.”
“Well I don’t really have a choice!” Kylo insisted.
“And what are you going to find out here that's safe for both of us?” Hux replied, gesturing frantically to the rotted buildings around them. “We’re in the most zombie-infected area you can go!”
“So you’re just trying the whole “I don’t need you.” Shit again? Hux we’ve just been over this!” Kylo growled.
“No Kylo, I’m not, I just want us to be realistic. I need to keep moving or I’ll die, you need shelter or you’ll die. We’re at an impasse.”
When Kylo did not reply Hux turned to him. He was staring up at one of the old buildings with a haunted expression. Hux’s eyes traveled to see where Kylo was looking and saw the word “Knights” scrawled across the dusty windows in red spray paint.
"What does that say?" Kylo asked in a nearly inaudible whisper.
"It says Knights." Hux informed him. He expected Kylo to elaborate, but he remained silent and still. “What is it?” Hux whispered back. But before Kylo could respond a zombie leaped through the window and tackled Hux to the ground as glass shards flew everywhere. Its bony hand gripped tightly on his throat so he couldn’t breath, his legs burned as broken glass jabbed into his thighs like tiny daggers. he went to slice through its arm with his knife but it had him pinned. It had a motorcycle helmet that had sort of melted into its head, a mouth of jagged teeth were where the visor should be, and black blood dripping down underneath the helmet coating the monster's skin and dripping onto Hux’s body. His eyes squinted in pain but he couldn’t get enough air to scream.
Kylo lunged and threw the monster off Hux, and he sat up panting for breath. Looking around he saw there were more of them. Five more of them. Some had helmets obscuring their faces, one had motorcycle handlebars sticking through its chest, but all of them were huge. Some even bigger than Kylo. Hux stumbled to his feat, backing up from the six of them, wondering if his best bet would just be to run.
“No no no no no no…” Kylo stammered beside him and Hux turned to see him shaking in fear.
“Pull yourself together!” Hux shouted.
Kylo glanced between Hux and the zombie he had thrown to the ground. “I can’t do this. I can’t kill them!” Kylo shook his head as one of the zombies ran with surprising speed towards him.
“Of course you can!” Hux yelled angrily, unholstering his pistol and shooting the zombie in the head which did not do much to deter it from its target, but Kylo remained frozen in place.
Hux grunted in frustration and grabbed Kylo’s wrist running across the street as the gang of zombies chased them. “What has gotten into you?! You were tearing zombies apart an hour ago!”
“I knew them…” Kylo replied shakily and Hux could tell he was loosing him.
“Knew- In the past tense!” Hux exclaimed. “They’re dead and now they’re trying to kill you!”
“I know!” Kylo yelled back. “I’m sorry it’s just… they were who I was trying to save when I was killed.” Kylo replied as he stumbled over his mangled feet and fell to the ground.
“We don’t really have time for this!” Hux answered, yanking him back onto his feet. The zombies had caught up to them now. Hux slid away as one lunged at him. Cold hands grabbed him from behind as he came to a halt. “Kylo!” He yelled as the zombie yanked him back, but Kylo remained frozen. Hux huffed in frustration and slipped his arms out of his jacket to get away.
“Kylo snap out of it!” He screamed frantically as he dove his knife into one of the zombies throats and tried to tear the helmet from its head as acidic blood spewed across his face and it screamed like it came from hell.
“It was getting dark. I heard them call my name.” Kylo mumbled through chattering teeth, staring blankly into the distance. “Ren was trying to kill them.”
“I don’t know who the fuck Ren is!” Hux exclaimed as he was dragged to the ground by another zombie. Its unhinged jaw plunged towards him to bite and Hux shot a bullet up its throat. Then he grabbed hold of the handlebars protruding from its chest, threw it off of him and rolled away.
“Ren was- was turning into a zombie…” Kylo continued as if he was completely unaware of what was going on around him. “He was going to take them all with him before he fully succumbed. So I- I”
“I don’t care what you did, Just help me!” Hux screamed, stumbling back onto his feet and pressing himself up against Kylo, using his hunting rifle like a baton to hold the zombies off.”
“I killed him.” Kylo stammered. “I killed him. I saved them, but he bit me.”
“Kylo stop it!” Hux yelled once more in desperation. “I can’t fight them off alone!”
The first zombie they’d encountered ran straight towards them. Its sunken helmet made it so there was no easy access to its neck. Hux fired at it, hoping it would slow it down but it hardly stumbled and they were surrounded on all sides. The zombie leaped, and Hux held up his rifle to shield his face, the metal was crushed under its grip and Hux was thrown to the ground.
“Kylo please!” Hux pleaded.
Maybe it was the fear in his voice but something in what he said had snapped Kylo out of his trance and the zombie's helmet was ripped from its shoulders, head still inside. “I’m sorry!” Kylo said through dry tears pulling Hux upright.
“No time to apologize now, just kill them!” Hux exclaimed and turned back to the other zombies.
Kylo threw himself at the at them, tearing at their throats as he howled with anger and sorrow. When the zombies saw one of their brethren go down they all diverted their attention away from Hux and towards Kylo. Hux took their distraction as an opportunity, slicing at one of the helmetless individuals' necks with his knife. As blood gurgled up from its wound it shrieked and flailed its arms wildly, grasping onto Hux’s arm, its claws getting caught in his bandages. Hux winced and sliced the rest of the way through its neck till its body fell limp and black blood pooled around the fallen corpse. Kylo emerged from the mangled corpses he had destroyed, holding one of the helmets, the same Knights logo was scrawled on the side. When he saw Hux he froze and let the helmet drop from his hand, running over to him.
“Fuck! Fuck no!” He grabbed onto Hux and fear and pain filled his eyes. “I’m sorry I’m so sorry.”
“What's wrong? What are you talking about?” Hux asked, confused.
“Hux you- you’ve been bit.” He replied shakily, holding up Hux’s arm that was once covered in bandages. An angry wound ate away at his upper arm, black puss dripped from the infected flesh and purple veiny structures ran up his shoulder and down to his fingers.
Hux froze when he saw it. He stood there silently as Kylo clung to him, hugging him tightly.
“Kylo I-” he paused, feeling as though he couldn’t speak.
“It’s okay, we can- we can fix it.” Kylo assured him, burying his face in his chest. “It hasn’t had time to spread yet, we can stop it before the infection gets bad.”
Hux sighed. “Kylo I was bit a month ago.”

@carefulrenzine!
Hello everyone! I apologize for my long absence. I didn’t get in touch because I was solving personal and psychological problems that were preventing me from functioning normally. I finally managed to get the "Careful, Ren" Kylux 10th Anniversary Zine! I would like to thank @darthastris for the opportunity to take part in this amazing project. Now that I received the zine itself and all the pleasant surprises that came with it, I’m just delighted - it’s all so wonderful!!!😍 I had to fight for this copy because it got lost in a sorting center in my country. Now this zine seems like a real treasure to me, which I literally snatched from the clutches of the postal service. Now I'm trying to get back to my usual rhythm and will be glad to share content with you again. In any case, thank you all so much! I love you all ❤️❤️❤️
