This print is from an ongoing series of prints called Ghostlines, made in response to her father's WW2 pilot's log and an interest in his experience as a young pilot flying Typhoons as part of the second tactical air force during the latter part of WW2.  His Log book offers a valuable insight into life as a pilot; the statistics of life expectancy and areas of operations.

“Often the most inspired art draws us in through emotion and sustains us intellectually by evoking a narrative within, one that asks questions but doesn’t quite answer them. Gary’s work has this quality,” said Ziomek, a teacher and artist. “You get the feeling that each of the women he has portrayed is a part of a larger narrative – sometimes aloof, sometimes emotional, often ethereal and beautiful, but always compelling,” continued Ziomek. “Gary paints in a way that captures the essence of these women, teasing us with questions about their stories and expertly eluding the answers,” concluded Ziomek. After years of struggle with serious vision problems, Hilsen is legally blind. Trained in fashion design and illustration, he is a self-taught painter. His paint application technique gives his acrylic paintings the texture of watercolor or oil, mediums in which he also works. Feminine Wiles showcases 30 acrylic and mixed media works. Feminine Wiles is curated by Jenny Ziomek.

“For this special anniversary show, we have chosen from a collection of 1,000 works that are now in 400 public and private collections,” said Kujawski, Art Advisor and Curator, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. “A decade ago, Esther Montanez, Fountain Gallery’s founding director, had a vision: to create the premier venue in New York City to represent artists with mental illness,” continued Kujawski. “A Decade: Collected Works by Fountain Gallery Artists is a tribute to Esther Montanez and to her mission accomplished,” concluded Kujawski. Added Lemakis, Director, Department of Fine Art, Citi, “We are pleased to curate this exhibition of art that has been collected for the past 10 years. It is not often that we can support such a worthy endeavor through the purchase of extraordinary artworks.”
