3rd Century CE Roundhouse Foundations, Vindolanda Roman Fort, Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland
These stones are the preserved remains of an earlier and unique roundhouse, dating from the start of the 3rd century. This roundhouse is different in design to others found at the site, more omate, and unusually had a large amount of material culture in its vicinity suggesting that its use was culturally important to the roundhouse dwellers of Vindolanda between 208-212 CE.
Roundhouses like this one are a long established local style of construction rather than normal Roman style buildings.
