Yes, I still live in hope that no deal Brexit will be stopped, but honestly, I think we all have to face reality now.

If we leave on 31st October with no deal, then things get problematic.

-We only grow/produce about 50% of the food we need in the UK. We’re also pretty rubbish at producing the raw materials we need for every day essentials like toilet paper. We import a lot of stuff, and even the stuff we get from outside the EU often comes via an EU port such as Rotterdam.

-Most stuff that gets imported into the UK comes via lorry at one of the ports. The vast majority comes through Dover.

-Estimates suggest that even a small delay in checking each lorry (because customs) will cause a log-jam at ports. Some estimates suggest that as little as 10% of the normal traffic would get through.

-And this is assuming that the ferries are even still sailing!

-The government has explicitly said it’s going to prioritise the imports of medication and water purification chemicals over food.

-Furthermore, many of our farmers rely on EU labour (skilled and unskilled), EU subsidies, EU imports and EU exports. Our farmers are not in great shape to survive brexit.

So, if I’ve convinced you it would be a good idea to put aside some food and other supplies, what can you do?

-Start off with 3 days worth of things you might normally eat, but look for long life versions- so instead of fresh vegetables and fruits you might buy frozen or tinned versions. Make sure you’ve got stuff for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, and a few snacks to help keep you cheerful.

-If you have the money and space to be able to do so, imagine you’re going on a self catering holiday for 2 weeks. What would you need to take? Can you put some or all of this by in your home?
