A sailing ship enters the Grand Harbour of Malta between Fort St Elmo and the Ricasoli East Breakwater.

Fort St Elmo, Malta, featured in the failed Slaves’ Revolt of 1749. Many of the slaves executed afterwards had their heads put on display on the Fort’s bastions as deterrent! This episode was a failed plot by Muslim slaves to rebel, assassinate Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca and take over the island. The revolt had to take place on 29 June 1749, but plans were leaked to the Order before it began after a certain tavern keeper, Giuseppe Cohen overheard two slaves talking about the plan and immediately went to inform the Grand Master. A rainbow points toward Fort St Elmo (1552) at the seaward end of the Valletta, Malta, peninsula. In 1565 the fort's defenders heroically resisted bombardment by an invading Ottoman force for 28 days.
