Fort Sewall overlooks the mouths of Marblehead and Salem Harbors. There has been a fortification here since 1644, with the current incarnation dating from from 1775 and 1807. It saw action during the War of 1812, when the USS Constitution sought refuge under its guns during a chase by a couple of British frigates (the USS Constitution made a trip here in 1997 to commemorate her bicentennial, the last time she left Boston Harbor). It was deemed surplus in the late nineteenth century and donated by the federal government to the Town of Marblehead for use as a park and historic site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. #fortsewall #marblehead (at Fort Sewall) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8_mXhQBniy/?igshid=107xtjuiknftw
