I’m not a big reader, like at all. But i finally found something that meant a lot to me, and interested me. When my Grandad died, it was my first real experience with death. I did not handle it very well, at all. But that’s because I’d not been exposed to death and what happens when someone dies. Through sheer desperation, fear and curiosity I googled things about the funeral industry. What would happen to my Grandad, where he’d go. This is when I came across @thegooddeath. This woman and her sheer openness on the subject of death helped me. It comforted me. It taught me what happens and that we shouldn’t be afraid of death. I read her other book, and learnt about the ways people grieve for their loved ones and their funeral processes. I found comfort in all of this. I found comfort in knowing exactly what happened to my Grandad when he died, what would happen next etc. There’s still some things I’m awkward with, but getting used to it will come in time. But I 100% agree that we need to talk about death openly. We need to explain to people that seeing a corpse isn’t something to fear. Embrace death. Grieve. Accept it. It happens to us all. I’m not religious, but I believe in an after life #foreverspooky. When I saw my Grandad, that was a shell of who he used to be. He looked peaceful and asleep. My Grandad had moved on to a better place, but I still couldn’t process this. I’d seen death as something bad and taboo. It isn’t.
