#30: Drowning
Word count: 200
Hawke could still remember the first time he’d jumped off a dock into a lake, unable to swim but determined to keep up with the other, bigger kids. As the dark water had closed over his head and his nose filled with liquid, he hadn’t panicked. Instinct had kicked in and he’d waved his arms and slowly figured it all out. Once he was back on land he’d thrown up the murky water and then laughed and done it again. There had been something addicting to the danger of it all–a high he chased most of his life.
So much of his life was like that moment of sinking into the deep water, where no one had taught him how to get back to the surface but he somehow found his way. People looked at him like he knew exactly what he was doing, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. He had no idea what he was doing. From one moment to the next, he left his fate up to that primal instinct deep inside of him that kept him going.
Forever drowning, forever kicking up toward the surface, forever wondering when he’d jump into something that would be just a little too deep.
