How come Facebook groups for bps insist on using a racking system? It kinda annoys me that they seem to forget that snakes need enrichment just as much as any other animal. Why do they put an effort to put such minimalistic enclosures together? For a milk snake. I understand. They like burrowing. They can be in a smaller tub since they like hiding in places rather than being in the open. But why ball pythons? It seems abusive.
They are too prideful in their ways to see reason honestly. It is 100% about the fact that it saves them money. And heck, even for a milk snake they deserve the option to climb or burrow, or hide in a hide. All snakes deserve the option to climb/perch or remain on the ground, to be warm or cool. See, the way I see it, proper keeping of animals is giving them options. If kept in a tiny drawer with the same heat, and no room to move, they are being given no choice but to stay in one position. Even if ball pythons ‘did’ naturally sit in one spot all night (which they don’t), they should be able to choose to sit instead of explore. While they don’t think things through like we do, they still have energy to expel and the need for proper thermoregulation.

I'm getting two ball pythons. And I'm wondering since they are hatching should I put things to climb in now? Or later? I'm using one tub and one sliding door enclosure. I have some hides but I'm going to get more. What would you say are good enrichment props for young snakes?
I would do it sooner rather than later, it is never to early to give them enrichment :) Baby ball pythons will often like to burrow(And some carry the behavior into adulthood too!), so a non dusty substrate that is a few inches tall on the cool side can provide them a good amount to burrow in (I have the cutest pic of Leliana as a baby with her little face sticking up out of her substrate too). Any plastic trees or roots you can get from a pet store are good, just be mindful that there is no way the snake can shove themselves inside of it and get stuck. You can also do half and half substrate for texture enrichment, so one half of the cage can be one thing and the other half another :) You can also provide them with paper towel tubes! They love shoving themselves in there :)
