Gap (noun) – opening in a forest canopy
When a tree falls or dies, it can create a “gap” or an opening in the forest canopy. This gap lets in sunshine and creates space for new trees and plants to grow. Sometimes the fallen tree becomes a nurse log fostering the next generation, or shade-intolerant species are able to grow when they otherwise wouldn’t survive. These gaps become diverse “microenvironments” within mature old-growth forests. Gaps help refresh old forests with opportunities for new life. ____________ NPS Photo of a gap in a forest near Longmire.
