Katashi bent over the refrigerator, staring at the golden chicken, his eyes sparkling with determination. He proceeded to flinch as he heard the door open, footsteps drawing close.

He quickly ripped off the drumstick and brought it to his mouth, only for it to be yanked away by an angry Fordon. The disabled teenager stared up at the eugenicist with a look of pure exhaustion. “Welcome home. How was work?”

“You really thought you could break into my house and eat my chicken?” Fordon snarled, his teeth ripping off a good-sized chunk of meat and skin.

“Nah, I guess I didn’t,” Katashi said, rolling out of the way to avoid a kick. “It sounds delicious though.”

“It is,” Fordon agreed, taking another bite.

Katashi ell onto his rear, stretching out to grab his staff, pulling it apart to reveal the blades. Fortunately, the murderer before him seemed much more focused on devouring the drumstick, going so far as to pull the second one from the cooked bird, just to eat it in front of Katashi. 

“Yeah, you don’t know how to use spices, though,” Katashi said, swords in his lap. “It’s not your fault; it’s a learned art. Actually, it’s funny. Mazo can make some really good chicken. He’s good at cooking in general. And Hornet? Hornet can heal anything. She could be the one running your small hospital. You know, preventing people from being euthanized by healing them before they reach their 30 days. She just needs a chance. But of course, you’re never going to give it to her, because you think she’s useless. You think we’re all useless. Even though Hornet can heal and Mazo can cook and Kenko can train and Niko can fight and Badger can lift and Pepper can fish and Filter can start fires and---”

“I get it.”

“No, you don’t,” Katashi said with a shake of his head. “You don’t get it. If you did, you’d stop trying to kill us. You think we’re useless but we can actually contribute a lot more to your village than you can. So who’s the real one who deserves to be on the chopping block? Food for thought. Literally.”

The teenager reassembled his staff before pushing himself up, leaning against it. After ensuring that Fordon wasn’t going to attack him---he probably would have if consequences hadn’t begun to rise---Katashi limped over to the door.

He had just touched the handle when the eugenicist called, “And what about you, huh? What’re you good at? What’re you good for?”

“Good question,” Katashi cheerfully said, turning around with his staff on his shoulders. “I’m good at being a brother. I’m good at being a boyfriend. I’m good at being a leader, I’m good at getting you to eat poisoned meat---”

Fordon’s face went from red to pale to purple to green, all within several amusing seconds. He probably would have lunged at Katashi had his cheeks not abruptly filled, causing him to dash to the sink. The teenager offered him a NIkoian smirk before sauntering outside.
